In the thin shell analysis of welded pad reinforced nozzles in pressure vessels, no contact between pad and vessel is often assumed. The significance of this contact force to the stress distribution in the structure is little known. In this paper, stress results from the finite element analysis, which includes the contact force between the pad and the vessel, are reported. A comparison of the finite element results with those from thin shell analysis and experiments shows that the finite element method with contact assumption yields improved theoretical prediction for the stress distribution. The effect of both the gap and friction between the pad and the vessel are also investigated.

To research the load upper bracket of Francis hydroelectric unit, then established the finite-element model, and analyzed the structure stress of 7 operating condition points with the ANSYS software. By the strain rosette test, acquired the data of stress-strain in the area of stress concentration of the upper bracket. The inaccuracy was considered below 5% by analyzing the contradistinction between the finite-element analysis and the test, and match the engineering precision and the test was reliable. The finite-element method could be used to judge the stress of the upper bracket, and it could provide reference for the Structural optimization and improvement too.

For pressure vessels, loss of thickness detected during scheduled maintenance utilizing UT scans can be assessed based on Level 1 or 2 analyses as per API 579 guidelines. However, Level 1 and 2 analyses can point to excessively conservative assessments. Level – 3 assessments utilizing the finite element method can be performed for a more accurate estimate of the load carrying capacity of the corroded structure. However, for a high fidelity structural response prediction using the finite element method, the characteristics of the model must be accurately represented. Although the three nonlinearities, namely, the geometric, material, and contact nonlinearities can be adequately included in a finite element analysis, procedures to accurately include the thickness measurements are not readily available. In this paper, a tool to map thicknesses obtained from UT scans onto a shell based finite element models, to perform Level – 3 analyses is discussed. The tool works in conjunction with Abaqus/CAE and is illustrated for two different structures following the elastic-plastic analysis procedure outlined in the API 579 document. The tool is intended only as a means to reduce the modeling time associated with mapping thicknesses. The results of the analyses and insights gained are presented.

In order to study the performance of asphalt pavement with function layer under temperature-load coupling action, the thickness of surface layer, the module of surface layer and was analyzed to abtain their influence on the function layer stress using the finite element method. The results clearly indicated that it is very effective to prevent the reflection crack by increasing the thickness of asphalt surface layer and it is not obvious to reduce the reflection crack through enhancing the module of asphalt surface layer.

The finite element method has been applied in the area of the cervical spine since the 1970's. In the present research work, the finite element method was employed to model, validate and analyze a complete model of the human cervical spine from C1 to T1, including interconnecting intervertebral discs, ligaments and joints. The developed model of the cervical spine was validated by the experimental results presented in the literature. As the values obtained from the finite element analysis were mainly in the range of motion observed in the experiment; it was concluded that the finite element results were consistent with the reported data in the literature. Next, the validated model of the cervical spine was examined under physiological loading modes to locate the areas bearing maximum stress in the cervical spine. Finally, to study the effect of variations in the material properties on the output of the finite element analysis, a material property sensitivity study was conducted to the C3-T1 model of cervical spine. Changes in the material properties of the soft tissues affected the external and internal responses of both the hard and soft tissue components, while changes in those of the hard tissues only affected the internal response of hard tissues.

By means of comparing results from finite element analysis and photoelasticity, the salient characteristics of a finite element model of a nut and bolt have been established. A number of two-dimensional and three-dimensional models were created with varying levels of complexity, and the results were compared with photoelastic results. It was found that both two-dimensional and three-dimensional models could produce accurate results provided the nut thread run-out and friction were modeled accurately. When using two-dimensional models, a number of models representing different positions around the helix of the thread were created to obtain more data for the stress distribution. This approach was found to work well and to be economical.

The paper describes and compares selected failure and plasticity conditions of concrete. The CEB-FIB condition, the von Mises plasticity condition with modification for concrete and the Chen-Chen condition are studied. The conditions are compared in 2D and two of these conditions are also used for numerical analysis of a deep beam. The software BSA is chosen for the analysis in the paper. The software BSA is based on the finite element method.

AbstractThe paper deals with design and computation of precise positioning mechanism. The aim of mechanism is to transfer applied load without any change of position of parts in question. The stabilization of position is assured by elastic elements connected to reductor which is adjusted into correct position by an actuator. The functionality of mechanism and its stiffness and strength characteristics were checked by the finite element method. The computations were accomplished for prescribed displacement of reductor. On the base of this type of loading the behaviour of the structure was evaluated.

The special type of C-hook is investigated in this paper. The C-hook is designed to carry a special load, where is not possible to use classical hooks or chain slings. The designed hook is consisted of two arms that ensure the stability of the load being carried. The finite element analysis is performed for the control of the stress and deformation state in the whole hook. The fatigue analysis is performed for the check of a lifetime of C-hook.

Cold-stretching is an effective way to make the pressure vessels lighter. A test vessel with austenitic stainless steel was designed and manufactured based on the current criterion, and the cold-stretching process was carried out. The deformation of each part of the vessel under the pressure of each stage were measured by the resistance strain gauge in its measurement range. The finite element method is used to calculate the deformation trend of the whole process of cold-stretching. In addition, the strain of complex deformation at nozzle and its surrounding was analyzed by FEM.

Analysis of the causes about the ejection seat in the ejection process, when the aircraft canopy is not throw away , ejection mechanism ignites advance. using the finite element method(FEM) to carry on the deformation analysis of the lock arm in the interlock device, defined the strength of the lowest parts of the lock arm, obtained the stress distribution graph of lock arm, which provides a theoretical reference for the interlock device on the optimal design.
