The purpose of this paper is to quantify the influence on external convective heat transfer of a coolant film whose position varies along the pressure side of a high-pressure turbine nozzle guide vane. The measurements were performed in the short-duration Isentropic Light Piston Compression Tube facility of the von Karman Institute. The effects of external and internal flow are considered in terms of Mach number, Reynolds number, free-stream turbulence intensity, blowing rate, and coolant to free-stream temperature ratio. The way to evaluate these results in terms of film cooling efficiency and heat transfer coefficient is finally discussed.

This contribution deals with an experimental aero-thermal investigation around a highly loaded transonic turbine nozzle guide vane mounted in a linear cascade arrangement. The measurements were performed in the von Karman Institute short duration Isentropic Light Piston Compression Tube facility allowing a correct simulation of Mach and Reynolds numbers as well as of the gas to wall temperature ratio compared to the values currently observed in modern aero engines. The experimental program consisted of flow periodicity checks by means of wall static pressure measurements and Schlieren flow visualizations, blade velocity distribution measurements by means of static pressure tappings, blade convective heat transfer measurements by means of platinum thin films, downstream loss coefficient and exit flow angle determinations by using a new fast traversing mechanism, and free-stream turbulence intensity and spectrum measurements. These different measurements were performed for several combinations of the free-stream flow parameters looking at the relative effects on the aerodynamic blade performance and blade convective heat transfer of Mach number, Reynolds number, and free-stream turbulence intensity.

Abstract To obtain high power and thermal efficiency, the 1st stage nozzle guide vanes of a high-pressure turbine need to operate under serious circumstances from burned gas coming out of combustors. This leads to vane suffering from effects of high thermal load, high pressure and turbulence, including flow-separated transition. Therefore, it is necessary to improve vane cooling performance under complex flow and heat transfer phenomena caused by the integration of these effects. In fact, these effects on a high-pressure turbine vane are controlled by several factors such as turbine inlet temperature, pressure ratio, turbulence intensity and length scale, vane curvature and surface roughness. Furthermore, if the vane is cooled by film cooling, hole configuration and blowing ratio are important factors too. These factors can change the aerothermal conditions of the vane operation. The present work aims to numerically predict sensitivity of cooling performances of the 1st stage nozzle guide vane under aerodynamic and thermal variations caused by three parameters i.e. pressure ratio, coolant inlet temperature and height of vane surface roughness using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) approach. Numerical results show that the coolant inlet temperature and the vane surface roughness parameters have significant effects on the vane temperature, thereby affecting the vane cooling performances significantly and sensitively.

AbstractThe effect of conjugate heat transfer is investigated on a first stage nozzle guide vane (NGV) of a high pressure gas turbine which has both impingement and film cooling holes. The study is carried out computationally by considering a linear cascade domain, having two passages formed between the vanes, with a chord length of 228 mm and spacing of 200 mm. The effect of (i) coolant and mainstream Reynolds numbers, (ii) thermal conductivity (iii) temperature difference between the mainstream and coolant at the internal surface of the nozzle guide vane are investigated under conjugate thermal condition. The results show that, with increasing coolant Reynolds number the lower conducting material shows larger percentage decrease in surface temperature as compared to the higher conducting material. However, the internal surface temperature is nearly independent of mainstream Reynolds number variation but shows significant variation for higher conducting material. Further, the temperature gradient within the solid thickness of NGV is higher for the lower conductivity material.

Film cooling and heat transfer measurements were carried out on a cooled nozzle guide vane in a linear cascade, using a transient liquid crystal technique. Three flow conditions were realized: the nominal operating condition of the vane with an exit Reynolds number of 1.47e6, as well as two lower flow conditions: Re2L = 1.0e6 and 7.5e5. The vane model was equipped with a single row of inclined round film cooling holes with compound angle orientation on the suction side. Blowing ratios ranging form 0.3 to 1.5 were covered, all using foreign gas injection (CO2) yielding an engine-representative density ratio of 1.6. Two distinct states of the incoming boundary layer onto the injection station were compared, an undisturbed laminar boundary layer as it forms naturally on the suction side, and a fully turbulent boundary layer which was triggered with a trip wire upstream of injection. The aerodynamic flow field is characterized in terms of profile Mach number distribution, and the associated heat transfer coefficients around the uncooled airfoil are presented. Both detailed and spanwise averaged results of film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficients are shown on the suction side, which indicate considerable influence of the state of the incoming boundary layer on the performance of a film cooling row. The influence of the mainstream flow condition on the film cooling behavior at constant blowing ratio is discussed for three chosen injection regimes.

Most of the optimization researches on film cooling have dealt with adiabatic film cooling effectiveness on the surface. However, the information on the overall cooling effectiveness is required to estimate exact performance of the optimization configuration since hot components such as nozzle guide vane have not only film cooling but also internal cooling features such as rib turbulators, jet impingement and pin-fins on the inner surface. Our previous studies [1,2] conducted the hole arrangement optimization to improve adiabatic film cooling effectiveness values and uniformity on the pressure side surface of the nozzle guide vane. In this study, the overall cooling effectiveness values were obtained at various cooling mass flow rates experimentally for the baseline and the optimized hole arrangements proposed by the previous study [1] and compared with the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness results. The tests were conducted at mainstream exit Reynolds number based on the chord of 2.2 × 106 and the coolant mass flow rate from 5 to 10% of the mainstream. For the experimental measurements, a set of tests were conducted using an annular sector transonic turbine cascade test facility in Korea Aerospace Research Institute. To obtain the overall cooling effectiveness values on the pressure side surface, the additive manufactured nozzle guide vane made of polymer material and Inconel 718 were installed and the surface temperature was measured using a FLIR infrared camera system. Since the optimization was based on the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness, the regions with rib turbulators and film cooling holes show locally higher overall cooling effectiveness due to internal convection and conduction, which can cause non-uniform temperature distributions. Therefore, the optimization of film cooling configuration should consider the effect of the internal cooling to avoid undesirable non-uniform cooling.

In order to assess the life of gas turbine critical components, it is essential to adequately specify their aerothermodynamic working environments. Steady-state analyses of the flow field and conjugate heat transfer of an internally air-cooled nozzle guide vane (NGV) and shrouds of a gas turbine engine at baseline operating conditions are numerically investigated. A high-fidelity CFD model is generated and the simulations are carried out with properly defined boundary conditions. The features of the complicated flow and temperature fields are revealed. In general, the Mach number is lower and the temperature is higher on the NGV pressure side than those on the suction side. There are two high temperature regions on the pressure side, and the temperature across the middle section is relatively low. These findings are closely related to the locations of the holes and outlets of the cooling flow passage, and consistent with the field observations of damaged NGVs. As a technology demonstration, the results provide required information for the life analysis of the NGV/shrouds assembly and improvement of the cooling flow arrangement.

This paper presents the first experimental measurements on an engine representative nozzle guide vane, of a new film-cooling hole geometry, a con¯vergings¯lot-hole¯ or console. The patented console geometry is designed to improve the heat transfer and aerodynamic performance of turbine vane and rotor blade cooling systems. These experiments follow the successful validation of the console design in low-speed flat-plate tests described in Part 1 of this paper. Stereolithography was used to manufacture a resin model of a transonic, engine representative nozzle guide vane in which seven rows of previously tested fan-shaped film-cooling holes were replaced by four rows of consoles. This vane was mounted in the annular vane ring of the Oxford cold heat transfer tunnel for testing at engine Reynolds numbers, Mach numbers and coolant to mainstream momentum flux ratios using a heavy gas to simulate the correct coolant to mainstream density ratio. Heat transfer data were measured using wide-band thermochromic liquid crystals and a modified analysis technique. Both surface heat transfer coefficient and the adiabatic cooling effectiveness were derived from computer-video records of hue changes during the transient tunnel run. The cooling performance, quantified by the heat flux at engine temperature levels, of the console vane compares favourably with that of the previously tested vane with fan-shaped holes. The new console film-cooling hole geometry offers advantages to the engine designer due to a superior aerodynamic efficiency over the fan-shaped hole geometry. These efficiency measurements are demonstrated by results from midspan traverses of a four-hole pyramid probe downstream of the nozzle guide vane.

An improvement in overall efficiency and power output for gas turbine engines can be obtained by increasing the combustor exit temperature, but the thermal management of metal parts exposed to hot gases is challenging. Discrete film cooling, combined with internal convective cooling is the current state-of-the-art available to aerothermal designers of these components. To simplify the simulation problem in the aerodynamic design phase, it is common practice to replace the cooling holes with source strips applied to the blade. This could lead to inaccuracies in high pressure turbine performance prediction. This study has been carried out on a fully-featured high pressure turbine stage using high-fidelity simulations. The film cooling holes on the nozzle guide vane and on the rotor are initially modelled using a strip model approach. Then, to increase the model fidelity, the strips on the suction side of the rotor are replaced with discrete fan shaped film cooling holes. A rigid body rotation is also applied to the nozzle guide vane to vary the stage capacity and reaction. The effects of the mesh topology & resolution are also taken into account. The results obtained with these two approaches are then compared, giving the designers a better understanding on film cooling modelling and relationship between capacity, reaction and performance. The accurate prediction of the complex interaction between cavity inflows and the main-flow, still represent a challenge for the state of the art RANS solvers. Hence, an unsteady phase-lag approach has been used to overcome the RANS limitations. A validation of the unsteady solutions has been carried out with respect to experimental data.
