The Effects of Adverse Pressure Gradients on Momentum and Thermal Structures in Transitional Boundary Layers: Part 1—Mean Quantities

The effects of adverse pressure gradients on the thermal and momentum characteristics of a heated transitional boundary layer were investigated with free-stream turbulence ranging from 0.3 to 0.6 percent. The acceleration parameter, K, was kept constant along the test section. Both surface heat transfer and boundary layer measurements were conducted. The boundary layer measurements were conducted with a three-wire probe (two velocity wires and one temperature wire) for two representative cases, K1 = −0.51 × 10−6 and K2 = −1.05 × 10−6. The surface heat transfer measurements were conducted for K values ranging from −0.045 × 10−6 to −1.44 × 10−6 over five divergent wall angles. The Stanton numbers of the cases with adverse pressure gradients were greater than that of the zero-pressure-gradient turbulent correlation in the low-Reynolds-number turbulent flow, and the difference increased as the adverse pressure gradient was increased. The adverse pressure gradient caused earlier transition onset and shorter transition length based on Rex, Reδ*, and Reθ in comparison to zero-pressure-gradient conditions. As expected, there was a reduction in skin friction as the adverse pressure gradient increased. In the U+−Y+ coordinates, the adverse pressure gradients had a significant effect on the mean velocity profiles in the near-wall region for the late-laminar and early transition stations. The mean temperature profile was observed to precede the velocity profile in starting and ending the transition process, opposite to what occurred in favorable pressure gradient cases in previous studies. A curve fit of the turbulent temperature profile in the log-linear region for the K2 case gave a conduction layer thickness of Y+ = 9.8 and an average Prt = 0.71. In addition, the wake region of the turbulent mean temperature profile was significantly suppressed.

The roughness models were scaled from surface measurements taken on actual, in-service land-based turbine hardware and include samples of fuel deposits, TBC spallation, erosion, and pitting as well as a smooth control surface. All St measurements were made in a developing turbulent boundary layer at the same value of Reynolds number (Rex≅900,000). An integral boundary layer method used to estimate cf for the smooth wall cases allowed the calculation of the Reynolds analogy (2St/cf). Results indicate that for a smooth wall, Reynolds analogy varies appreciably with pressure gradient. Smooth surface heat transfer is considerably less sensitive to pressure gradients than skin friction. For the rough surfaces with adverse pressure gradient, St is less sensitive to roughness than with zero or favorable pressure gradient. Roughness-induced Stanton number increases at zero pressure gradient range from 16–44% (depending on roughness type), while increases with adverse pressure gradient are 7% less on average for the same roughness type. Hot-wire measurements show a corresponding drop in roughness-induced momentum deficit and streamwise turbulent kinetic energy generation in the adverse pressure gradient boundary layer compared with the other pressure gradient conditions. The combined effects of roughness and pressure gradient are different than their individual effects added together. Specifically, for adverse pressure gradient the combined effect on heat transfer is 9% less than that estimated by adding their separate effects. For favorable pressure gradient, the additive estimate is 6% lower than the result with combined effects. Identical measurements on a “simulated” roughness surface composed of cones in an ordered array show a behavior unlike that of the scaled “real” roughness models. St calculations made using a discrete-element roughness model show promising agreement with the experimental data. Predictions and data combine to underline the importance of accounting for pressure gradient and surface roughness effects simultaneously rather than independently for accurate performance calculations in turbines.

This paper describes an investigation of the sensitivity of the heat transfer coefficient under the film to the state of the approach boundary layer for injection through a row of holes on a flat plate. The investigation is done for a range of blowing parameters using a heat-mass transfer analogy. Injection angles of 35 deg and 90 deg are covered. Additionally, for the same injection geometries, the effect of injection in the presence of mild adverse, mild favorable, and strong favorable mainstream pressure gradients is investigated. The results indicate that the heat transfer coefficient under the film is sensitive neither to the condition of the approach boundary layer nor to the presence of a mild adverse pressure gradient, but it is significantly lowered by a favorable pressure gradient, particularly at low blowing parameters.

The effects of adverse pressure gradients on turbulent structures were investigated by carrying out direct numerical simulations of turbulent boundary layers subjected to adverse and zero pressure gradients. The equilibrium adverse pressure gradient flows were established by using a power law free-stream distribution U∞ ~ xm. Two-point correlations of velocity fluctuations were used to show that the spanwise spacing between near-wall streaks is affected significantly by a strong adverse pressure gradient. Low-momentum regions are dominant in the middle of the boundary layer as well as in the log layer. Linear stochastic estimation was used to provide evidence for the presence of low-momentum regions and to determine their statistical properties. The mean width of such large-scale structures is closely associated with the size of the hairpin-like vortices in the outer layer. The conditionally averaged flow fields around events producing Reynolds stress show that hairpin-like vortices are the structures associated with the production of outer turbulence. The shapes of the vortices beyond the log layer were found to be similar when their length scales were normalized according to the boundary layer thickness. Estimates of the conditionally averaged velocity fields associated with the spanwise vortical motion were obtained by using linear stochastic estimation. These results confirm that the outer region of the adverse pressure gradient boundary layer is populated with streamwise-aligned vortex organizations, which are similar to those of the vortex packet model proposed by Adrian, Meinhart & Tomkins (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 422, 2000, pp. 1–54). The adverse pressure gradient augments the inclination angles of the packets and the mean streamwise spacing of the vortex heads in the packets.

A physics-based approach is employed and a new prediction tool is developed to predict the wavevector-frequency spectrum of the turbulent boundary layer wall pressure fluctuations for subsonic airfoils under the influence of adverse pressure gradients. The prediction tool uses an explicit relationship developed by D. M. Chase, which is based on a fit to zero pressure gradient data. The tool takes into account the boundary layer edge velocity distribution and geometry of the airfoil, including the blade chord and thickness. Comparison to experimental adverse pressure gradient data shows a need for an update to the modeling constants of the Chase model. To optimize the correlation between the predicted turbulent boundary layer wall pressure spectrum and the experimental data, an optimization code (iSIGHT) is employed. This optimization module is used to minimize the absolute value of the difference (in dB) between the predicted values and those measured across the analysis frequency range. An optimized set of modeling constants is derived that provides reasonable agreement with the measurements.

Two methods of flow control were designed to mitigate the effects of the horseshoe vortex structure (HV) at an airfoil/endwall junction. An experimental study was conducted to quantify the effects of localized boundary layer removal on surface heat transfer in a low-speed wind tunnel. A transient infrared technique was used to measure the convective heat transfer values along the surface surrounding the juncture. Particle image velocimetry was used to collect the time-mean velocity vectors of the flow field across three planes of interest. Boundary layer suction was applied through a thin slot cut into the leading edge of the airfoil at two locations. The first, referred to as Method 1, was directly along the endwall, the second, Method 2, was located at a height ∼1/3 of the approaching boundary layer height. Five suction rates were tested; 0%, 6.5%, 11%, 15% and 20% of the approaching boundary layer mass flow was removed at a constant rate. Both methods reduced the effects of the HV with increasing suction on the symmetry, 0.5-D and 1-D planes. Method 2 yielded a greater reduction in surface heat transfer but Method 1 outperformed Method 2 aerodynamically by completely removing the HV structure when 11% suction was applied. This method however produced other adverse effects such as high surface shear stress and localized areas of high heat transfer near the slot edges at high suction rates.

Experiments were performed to investigate the effect of an adverse pressure gradient on the mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles for an equilibrium boundary layer. The equilibrium boundary layer, which makes self-similar profiles, was constructed using a power law distribution of free stream velocity. The exponent of the law was adjusted to −0.188. The wall shear stress was measured with a drag balance by a floating element. The investigation of the law of the wall and the similarity of the streamwise turbulent intensity profile was made using both a friction velocity and new proposed velocity scale. The velocity scale is derived from the boundary layer equation. The mean velocity gradient profile normalized with the height and the new velocity scale exists the region where the value is almost constant. The turbulent intensity profiles normalized with the friction velocity strongly depend on the nondimensional pressure gradient near the wall. However, by mean of the local velocity scale, the profiles might be achieved to be similar with that of a zero pressure gradient.

The spatial-temporal flow-field and associated surface heat transfer within the leading edge, end-wall region of a bluff body were examined using both particle image velocimetry and thermochromic liquid crystal temperature measurements. The horseshoe vortex system in the end-wall region is mechanistically linked to the upstream boundary layer unsteadiness. Hairpin vortex packets, associated with turbulent boundary layer bursting behavior, amalgamate with the horseshoe vortex resulting in unsteady strengthening and streamwise motion. The horseshoe vortex unsteadiness exhibits two different natural frequencies: one associated with the transient motion of the horseshoe vortex, and the other with the transient surface heat transfer. Comparable unsteadiness occurs in the end-wall region of the more complex airfoil geometry of a linear turbine cascade. To directly compare the horseshoe vortex behavior around a turning airfoil to that of a simple bluff body, a length scale based on the maximum airfoil thickness is proposed.
