The effect of transition modeling on the heat transfer predictions from rotating turbine blades was investigated. Three-dimensional computations using a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes code were performed. The code utilized the Baldwin–Lomax algebraic turbulence model, which was supplemented with a simple algebraic model for transition. The heat transfer results obtained on the blade surface and the hub endwall were compared with experimental data for two Reynolds numbers and their corresponding rotational speeds. The prediction of heat transfer on the blade surfaces was found to improve with the inclusion of the transition length model and wake-induced transition effects over the simple abrupt transition model.

Abstract A numerical study of rib augmented cooling of turbine blades is reported in this paper. The time-dependent velocity field around a pair of symmetrically placed ribs on the walls of a three-dimensional rectangular channel was studied by use of a modified version of Marker-And-Cell algorithm to solve the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes and energy equations. The flow structures are presented with the help of instantaneous velocity vector and vorticity fields, FFT and time averaged and rms values of components of velocity. The spanwise averaged Nusselt number is found to increase at the locations of reattachment. The numerical results are compared with available numerical and experimental results. The presence of ribs leads to complex flow fields with regions of flow separation before and after the ribs. Each interruption in the flow field due to the surface mounted rib enables the velocity distribution to be more homogeneous and a new boundary layer starts developing downstream of the rib. The heat transfer is primarily enhanced due to the decrease in the thermal resistance owing to the thinner boundary layers on the interrupted surfaces. Another reason for heat transfer enhancement can be attributed to the mixing induced by large-scale structures present downstream of the separation point.

Abstract Casting deviations introduce geometric variability that impacts the aerodynamic performance of turbomachinery. These effects are studied for a high-pressure turbine rotor blade from a modern aero-engine. A sample of 197 blades were measured using structured-light three-dimensional scanning, and the performance of each blade is quantified using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations. Casting variation is typically managed by applying geometric tolerances to determine the suitability of a component for service. The analysis demonstrates that this approach may not be optimal since it does not necessarily align with performance, in particular the capacity and efficiency. Alternatively, functional acceptance based on the predicted performance of each blade removes the uncertainty associated with geometric tolerancing and gives better performance control. Building on these findings, the paper proposes a method to set the orientation of the fir-tree, which is machined after casting. By customizing the alignment of each blade, performance variability and scrap rates can be significantly reduced. The method uses predictions of performance to reorient the castings to compensate for manufacturing-induced errors, without changing the design-intent blade geometry and with minimal changes to the manufacturing facility.

Leading edge impingement systems are increasingly being used for high pressure turbine blades in gas turbine engines, in regions where very high heat loads are encountered. The flow structure in such systems can be very complex and high resolution experimental data is required for engine-realistic systems to enable code validation and optimal design. This paper presents spatially resolved heat transfer distributions for an engine-realistic impingement system for multiple different hole geometries, with jet Reynolds numbers in the range of 13,000–22,000. Following this, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics simulations are compared to the experimental data. The experimental results show variation in heat transfer distributions for different geometries, however average levels are primarily dependent on jet Reynolds number. The computational simulations match the shape of the distributions well however with a consistent over-prediction of around 10% in heat transfer levels.

Detailed heat transfer measurements and predictions are given for a power generation turbine rotor with 127 deg of nominal turning and an axial chord of 130 mm. Data were obtained for a set of four exit Reynolds numbers comprised of the facility maximum point of 2.50×106, as well as conditions which represent 50%, 25%, and 15% of this maximum condition. Three ideal exit pressure ratios were examined including the design point of 1.443, as well as conditions which represent −25% and +20% of the design value. Three inlet flow angles were examined including the design point and ±5deg off-design angles. Measurements were made in a linear cascade with highly three-dimensional blade passage flows that resulted from the high flow turning and thick inlet boundary layers. Inlet turbulence was generated with a blown square bar grid. The purpose of the work is the extension of three-dimensional predictive modeling capability for airfoil external heat transfer to engine specific conditions including blade shape, Reynolds numbers, and Mach numbers. Data were obtained by a steady-state technique using a thin-foil heater wrapped around a low thermal conductivity blade. Surface temperatures were measured using calibrated liquid crystals. The results show the effects of strong secondary vortical flows, laminar-to-turbulent transition, and also show good detail in the stagnation region.

To investigate the penalties associated with using a variable speed power turbine (VSPT) in a rotorcraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing, various analysis tools are required. Such analysis tools must be able to model the flow accurately within the operating envelope of VSPT. For power turbines low Reynolds numbers and a wide range of the incidence angles, positive and negative, due to the variation in the shaft speed at relatively fixed corrected flows, characterize this envelope. The flow in the turbine passage is expected to be transitional and separated at high incidence. The turbulence model of Walters and Leylek was implemented in the NASA Glenn-HT code to enable a more accurate analysis of such flows. Two-dimensional heat transfer predictions of flat plate flow and two and three dimensional heat transfer predictions on a turbine blade were performed and reported herein. Heat transfer computations were performed because it is a good marker for transition. The final goal is to be able to compute the aerodynamic losses. Armed with the new transition model, total pressure losses for three-dimensional flow of an Energy Efficient Engine (E3) tip section cascade for a range of incidence angles were computed in anticipation of the experimental data. The results obtained form a loss bucket for the chosen blade.

In order to study the effect of film cooling on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of actual turbine blades, a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code has been developed. An existing code (Chima and Yokota, 1990) has been modified for the purpose. The code is an explicit finite difference code with an algebraic turbulence model. The thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a general body-fitted coordinate system. The effects of film cooling have been incorporated into the code in the form of appropriate boundary conditions at the hole locations on the blade surface. Each hole exit is represented by several control volumes, thus providing an ability to study the effect of hole shape on the film-cooling characteristics. Comparison with experimental data is fair. Further validation of the code is required, however, and in this respect, there is an urgent need for detailed experimental data on actual turbine blades.

This paper presents the effects of major geometrical modifications to the interior of a convection cooled gas turbine rotor blade. The analysis of the flow is performed experimentally with flow visualization via paint injection into water whereas the flow and the heat transfer are investigated numerically with Ansys CFX utilizing the SST turbulence model. Two sets of calculations are carried out, one under the same conditions as the experiments and another according to realistic hot gas conditions with conjugate heat transfer. The aim is to identify flow phenomena altering the heat transfer in the blade and to manipulate them in order to reduce the thermal load of the material. The operating point of the geometric base configuration is set to Re = 50,000 at the inlet while for the modified geometries the pressure ratio is held constant compared to the base. Flow structures and heat transfer conditions are evaluated and are linked to specific geometric features. Among several investigated configurations one could be identified that leads to a cooling effectiveness 15% larger compared to the base.

A 3D Navier-Stokes investigation of a high pressure turbine rotor blade including tip clearance effects is presented. The 3D Navier-Stokes code developed at ONERA solves the three-dimensional unsteady set of mass-averaged Navier-Stokes equations by the finite volume technique. A one step Lax-Wendroff type scheme is used in a rotating frame of reference. An implicit residual smoothing technique has been implemented, which accelerates the convergence towards the steady state. A mixing length model adapted to 3D configurations is used. The turbine rotor flow is calculated at transonic operating conditions. The tip clearance effect is taken into account. The gap region is discretized using more than 55,000 points within a multi-domain approach. The solution accounts for the relative motion of the blade and casing surfaces. The total mesh is composed of five sub-domains and counts 710,000 discretization points. The effect of the tip clearance on the main flow is demonstrated. The calculation results are compared to a 3D inviscid calculation, without tip clearance.
