Eccentric Operation and Blade-Loss Simulation of a Rigid Rotor Supported by an Improved Squeeze Film Damper

This paper outlines an improved squeeze film damper which reduces significantly the dependence of the stiffness of conventional squeeze film dampers on the vibration amplitudes. This improved damper consists of a conventional squeeze film damper with a flexibility supported outer ring. This secondary flexible support is considered to be massless, and to have a constant stiffness and damping. Assuming the short bearing approximation and the ‘π’ film cavitation model, the performances of this damper in preventing bistable operation and sub-synchronous and nonsynchronous motions are theoretically demonstrated for a rigid rotor supported on a squeeze film damper. Blade-loss simulations are carried out numerically.

This paper proposes an improved squeeze film damper which will prevent the bistable operation associated with conventional squeeze film dampers at large unbalances and/or at small bearing parameters. It consists of a conventional squeeze film damper with a flexibly supported outer ring. This secondary flexible support is considered to be massless, and to have a constant stiffness and damping. The effectiveness of this damper in preventing bistable operation is investigated over a wide range of operating conditions for a rigid rotor supported on a centrally preloaded squeeze film damper. It is shown that depending on relevant parameters such as the stiffness ratio between the secondary support and the retaining spring, the damping coefficient of the support, and the mass ratio between the damper outer ring and the rotor, this proposed damper is very effective in preventing bistable operation even for high unbalance conditions.

An efficient oil film damper known as a squeeze film damper with valvular metal rubber squeeze film ring (SFD/VMR) was developed for more effective and reliable vibration control, and especially for improving the blade loss dynamics of high-speed rotors based on the conventional squeeze film damper (SFD). The immobile squeeze film ring of the SFD was replaced by the elastic squeeze film ring with the valvular metal rubber subassembly (VMR) of the SFD/VMR. The squeeze film force properties of the SFD/VMR was improved, because it can passively adjust the squeeze film clearance by taking advantage of the elastic deformation of the VMR and can control the squeeze film clearance in a suitable range. The characteristics of squeeze film stiffness and damping coefficients, as well as the steady-state unbalance response of a simple rigid rotor supported on SFD/VMR and SFD, were reported in a previous literature[1]. In this paper, the transient response of the rigid rotor supported on SFD/VMR and SFD subjected to sudden unbalance of blade loss are inverstigated. Time transient simulation and experimental results indicated that SFD/VMR can operate effectively under much greater unbalance compared with SFD, especially under relative large impact loads of blade loss. The SFD/VMR can suppress the occurrence of the nonlinear vibration phenomenon markedly, such as the bistable jump up phenomenon. Furthermore, the effective eccentricities of SFD/VMR with small transfer ratio (T<1.2) extend to two times of SFD, and optimum film stiffness and damping distribution within the whole film clearance can be achieved.

A pressurized oil squeeze film damper supporting a rigid rotor mounted in antifriction bearings is investigated. Orifice and inherent feed inlets are examined, and it is shown that the clearance determines the inlet resistance for a groove or slot. The film stiffness and damping forces are determined as a function of the restrictor coefficient, rotor unbalance speed and the supply pressure using the short bearing approximation. These forces are related to the system transmissibility. A design methodology for low transmissibilities is presented.

The permeability of the outer race of PSFD could remarkably improve the squeeze film damping properties. When a squeeze-film damper-mounted rigid rotor system is operated eccentrically, the nonlinear forces are no longer radially symmetric and a disordered dynamical behavior (i.e., quasi-periodic and chaotic vibration) will occur. To suppress the undesired vibration characteristics, the hybrid squeeze-film damper bearing consisting of hydrostatic chambers and hydrodynamic ranges is proposed. In order to change the pressure in hydrostatic chambers, two pairs of electric-hydraulic orifices are used in this paper. The dynamic model of the system is established with the consideration of the electric-hydraulic actuator. The complex nonsynchronous vibration of squeeze-film dampers rotor-bearing system is demonstrated to be stabilized by such electric-hydraulic orifices actuators with proportional-plus-derivative (PD) controllers. Numerical results show that the nonchaotic operation range of the system will be increased by tuning the control loop gain.

Abstract The behaviors of oil film stiffness and damping coefficients of the deep multi-recessed hybrid squeeze film damper (HSFD) with the orifices compensated are first analysed in this paper. The control ability of the HSFD on the rotor system vibrations is studied theoretically and experimentally with a rigid rotor system supported on the HSFD, and compared with that of the conventional squeeze film damper (SFD). Investigation shows that the HSFD not only can significantly improve the high nonlinearity of the SFD, but also can effectively control the rotor vibrational amplitudes, especially for larger rotor unbalance levels and radial clearance ratios, as compared with the SFD.

This work is intended to evaluate a cavitation model based on the complete Rayleigh–Plesset (RP) equation for use in squeeze film damper calculations. The RP equation governs the variation in the radius of the cavitation bubbles at rest, surrounded by an infinite incompressible fluid and subjected to an external pressure. This equation is obtained from the momentum equation and it takes into account the ensemble of the phenomena related to the dynamics of the bubbles (surface tension, damping, and inertia). All the terms in the RP equation will be taken into account in the present work plus a dilatation viscosity introduced by Someya in 2003. Numerical results will be compared with experimental data obtained by Adiletta and Pietra in 2006. The results underline the influence of the effects contained in the RP equation on the pressure field.

When a squeeze-film damper is operated eccentrically, the nonlinear damper forces are no longer radially symmetric and subharmonic and quasi-periodic vibrations may be excited by the rotor unbalance. In this study, the unbalance response of a rigid rotor, supported on an eccentric squeeze film damper, is first approximated by a harmonic series whose coefficients are determined by the collocation method, together with a nonlinear least-square regression. The stability of the resulting periodic solution is then examined using the Floquet transition matrix method. For sufficiently large values of the unbalance and the damper static radial misalignment, it is shown that the approximate harmonic motion loses its stability and bifurcates into a stable subharmonic motion and a quasi-periodic motion at speeds above twice the system critical speed. This analytical finding is verified by a numerical integration in forms of the Poincare´ map, the rotor trajectory, the bifurcation diagram, and the power spectrum. It is suggested that stability analysis and numerical integration should always be incorporated into an approximate analytical method to achieve an adequate approximation. The results of this study show that the introduction of squeeze-film dampers may give rise to the undesirable nonsynchronous vibrations, which limits the maximum speed at which dampers should be used.

The study focuses on the effect of a small unidirectional load such as comes from imperfect balance between preloading on centering springs and gravitational load on squeeze film dampers. A rigid rotor-squeeze film damper system is considered, and a thorough study of the synchronous motion of the system is performed. Two perturbation solutions are developed: one for large speed and one for small speed. The perturbation solutions are shown to be in good agreement with numerical simulation and published experimental results.
