A method of solution of the thermal boundary layer equation for a gas, together with the heat conduction equation for the turbine blade, using the boundary condition of the fourth kind (conjugate problem), is presented. The effect of the surface temperature distribution on the heat transfer coefficient (the effect of thermal history) is considered. This effect is important for gas turbine blades because the difference in temperatures between the blade’s surface and gas usually varies considerably along the blade’s surface; hence, the effect of thermal history can be significant. It is shown that the results, obtained accounting for thermal history, can differ substantially from results calculated with the assumption that the blade’s surface is isothermal. This might be one of the reasons why there is a marked difference between the actual temperature distribution of the turbine blade and the calculated one. It is important to consider the effect of thermal history since it is a fact that the major unknown in the design of turbine blade cooling systems is in the estimation of external heat transfer coefficient (Hannis and Smith, 1989).

An existing three-dimensional Navier–Stokes code (Arnone et al., 1991), modified to include film cooling considerations (Garg and Gaugler, 1994), has been used to study the effect of coolant velocity and temperature distribution at the hole exit on the heat transfer coefficient on three film-cooled turbine blades, namely, the C3X vane, the VKI rotor, and the ACE rotor. Results are also compared with the experimental data for all the blades. Moreover, Mayle’s transition criterion (1991), Forest’s model for augmentation of leading edge heat transfer due to free-stream turbulence (1977), and Crawford’s model for augmentation of eddy viscosity due to film cooling (Crawford et al., 1980) are used. Use of Mayle’s and Forest’s models is relevant only for the ACE rotor due to the absence of showerhead cooling on this rotor. It is found that, in some cases, the effect of distribution of coolant velocity and temperature at the hole exit can be as much as 60 percent on the heat transfer coefficient at the blade suction surface, and 50 percent at the pressure surface. Also, different effects are observed on the pressure and suction surface depending upon the blade as well as upon the hole shape, conical or cylindrical.

A numerical model for conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulation is established for a turbine blade with air cooling, and 3D heat transfer simulation is accomplished. Effects of different amount of cooling air on the surface temperature distribution, work, efficiency of turbine blade is studied. The results show that the surface temperature drops quickly with the increase of cooling air at beginning and then become mild, the blade work goes up, the efficiency goes down.

A phase change material based radiant cooling panel with thermoelectric module (PCM-TERCP) is proposed in this study. It consists of two aluminium panels, and phase change materials (PCMs) sandwiched between the two panels. Thermoelectric modules (TEMs) are attached to one of the aluminium panels, and heat sinks are attached to the top side of TEMs. PCM-TERCP is a thermal energy storage concept equipment, in which TEMs freeze the PCM during the night whose melting temperature is 16○C. Therefore, the radiant cooling panel can maintain a surface temperature of 16◦C without the operation of TEM during the day. Furthermore, it is necessary to design the PCM-TERCP in a way that it can maintain the panel surface temperature during the targeted operating time. Therefore, the numerical model was developed using finite difference method to evaluate the thermal behaviour of PCM-TERCP. Experiments were also conducted to validate the performance of the developed model. Using the developed model, the possible operation time was investigated to determine the overall heat transfer coefficient required between radiant cooling panel and TEM. Consequently, the results showed that a overall heat transfer coefficient of 394 W/m2K is required to maintain the surface temperature between 16○C to 18○C for a 3 hours operation.

The scope of this work was to develop a technique based on the regression method and apply it on a real cooled geometry for measuring its internal heat transfer distribution. The proposed methodology is based upon an already available literature approach. For implementation of the methodology, the geometry is initially heated to a known steady temperature, followed by thermal transient, induced by injection of ambient air to its internal cooling system. During the thermal transient, external surface temperature of the geometry is recorded with the help of infrared camera. Then, a numerical procedure based upon a series of transient finite element analyses of the geometry is applied by using the obtained experimental data. The total test duration is divided into time steps, during which the heat flux on the internal surface is iteratively updated to target the measured external surface temperature. The final procured heat flux and internal surface temperature data of each time step is used to find the convective heat transfer coefficient via linear regression. This methodology is successfully implemented on three geometries: a circular duct, a blade with U-bend internal channel, and a cooled high pressure vane of real engine, with the help of a test rig developed at the University of Florence, Italy. The results are compared with the ones retrieved with similar approach available in the open literature, and the pros and cons of both methodologies are discussed in detail for each geometry.

A three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code has been used to compute the heat transfer coefficient on two film-cooled turbine blades, namely the VKI rotor with six rows of cooling holes including three rows on the shower head, and the C3X vane with nine rows of holes including five rows on the shower head. Predictions of heat transfer coefficient at the blade surface using three two-equation turbulence models, specifically, Coakley’s q-ω model, Chien’s k-ε model and Wilcox’s k-ω model with Menter’s modifications, have been compared with the experimental data of Camci and Arts (1990) for the VKI rotor, and of Hylton et al. (1988) for the C3X vane along with predictions using the Baldwin-Lomax (B-L) model taken from Garg and Gaugler (1995). It is found that for the cases considered here the two-equation models predict the blade heat transfer somewhat better than the B-L model except immediately downstream of the film-cooling holes on the suction surface of the VKI rotor, and over most of the suction surface of the C3X vane. However, all two-equation models require 40% more computer core than the B-L model for solution, and while the q-ω and k-ε models need 40% more computer time than the B-L model, the k-ω model requires at least 65% more time due to slower rate of convergence. It is found that the heat transfer coefficient exhibits a strong spanwise as well as streamwise variation for both blades and all turbulence models.

The objective of this work is to experimentally and numerically evaluate small-scale cryosurgery using an ultrafine cryoprobe. The outer diameter (OD) of the cryoprobe was 550 μm. The cooling performance of the cryoprobe was tested with a freezing experiment using hydrogel at 37 °C. As a result of 1 min of cooling, the surface temperature of the cryoprobe reached −35 °C and the radius of the frozen region was 2 mm. To evaluate the temperature distribution, a numerical simulation was conducted. The temperature distribution in the frozen region and the heat transfer coefficient was discussed.

In order to continue increasing the efficiency of gas turbines, an important effort is made on the thermal management of the turbine stage. In particular, understanding and accurately estimating the thermal loads in a vane passage is of primary interest to engine designers looking to optimize the cooling requirements and ensure the integrity of the components. This paper focuses on the measurement of endwall heat transfer in a vane passage with a three-dimensional (3D) airfoil shape and cylindrical endwalls. It also presents a comparison with predictions performed using an in-house developed Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) solver featuring a specific treatment of the numerical smoothing using a flow adaptive scheme. The measurements have been performed in a steady state axial turbine facility on a novel platform developed for heat transfer measurements and integrated to the nozzle guide vane (NGV) row of the turbine. A quasi-isothermal boundary condition is used to obtain both the heat transfer coefficient and the adiabatic wall temperature within a single measurement day. The surface temperature is measured using infrared thermography through small view ports. The infrared camera is mounted on a robot arm with six degrees of freedom to provide high resolution surface temperature and a full coverage of the vane passage. The paper presents results from experiments with two different flow conditions obtained by varying the mass flow through the turbine: measurements at the design point (ReCax=7.2×105) and at a reduced mass flow rate (ReCax=5.2×105). The heat transfer quantities, namely the heat transfer coefficient and the adiabatic wall temperature, are derived from measurements at 14 different isothermal temperatures. The experimental data are supplemented with numerical predictions that are deduced from a set of adiabatic and diabatic simulations. In addition, the predicted flow field in the passage is used to highlight the link between the heat transfer patterns measured and the vortical structures present in the passage.

Basel cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human skin malignancy. Its incidence has increased significantly in Australia, Europe and North America over the past decade. A number of modalities are currently used for treatment of BCC, including cryosurgery which offers a potential for high cure rate, low cost, minimal bleeding and good cosmetic effect. However, cryosurgery is not used frequently for BCC because no current method exists to design adequate treatment parameters. We present a numerical analysis on the thermal history of the target tissue during cryosurgery of a nodular BCC using liquid nitrogen (LN2) spray. The model uses Pennes equation to describe the heat transfer within the target tissue. A convective thermal boundary is used to describe the heat interaction between the tissue and LN2, and the apparent heat capacity method is applied to address the tissue phase change process. A parametric study is conducted on the convective heat transfer coefficient (hs: 104~106 W/m2·K), cooling site area (rs/R0: 0.5~1.0) and spray time (t: 0~30 sec.), with the objective to understand the thermal history during tissue freezing, including lethal temperature (-50 °C) and cooling rate (CR). Results demonstrate that propagation of the lethal isotherm is sensitive to the convective heat transfer coefficient, hs, with a range of 104~5×104 W/m2·K. Increasing the cooling site area can significantly enhance cooling efficiency, producing dramatic increase in the amount of tissue encompassed by the lethal isotherm. The cooling rate (CR) shows a highly dynamic distribution during the cooling process: the highest CR drops quickly from 140 °C/sec. (t=0.5 sec.) to 20 °C/sec. (t=5 sec.). The highest CR is initially located close to the cooling site but moves toward the inside of the tissue as treatment proceeds. The model presented herein provides a simulation tool for treatment planning of cryosurgery using LN2 spray, in which the protocol parameters, e.g. cooling site area and spray time, can be determined for an optimal outcome. The quantitative predictions on the propagation of lethal isotherm and the distribution of CR should help to optimize cryosurgery efficacy.

Determination of a scalable Nusselt number (based on “adiabatic heat transfer coefficient”) has been the primary objective of the most existing heat transfer experimental studies. Based on the assumption that the wall thermal boundary conditions do not affect the flow field, the thermal measurements were mostly carried out at near adiabatic condition without matching the engine realistic wall-to-gas temperature ratio (TR). Recent numerical studies raised a question on the validity of this conventional practice in some applications, especially for turbine blade. Due to the relatively low thermal inertia of the over-tip-leakage (OTL) flow within the thin clearance, the fluids' transport properties vary greatly with different wall thermal boundary conditions and the two-way coupling between OTL aerodynamics and heat transfer cannot be neglected. The issue could become more severe when the gas turbine manufacturers are making effort to achieve much tighter clearance. However, there has been no experimental evidence to back up these numerical findings. In this study, transient thermal measurements were conducted in a high-temperature linear cascade rig for a range of tip clearance ratio (G/S) (0.3%, 0.4%, 0.6%, and 1%). Surface temperature history was captured by infrared thermography at a range of wall-to-gas TRs. Heat transfer coefficient (HTC) distributions were obtained based on a conventional data processing technique. The profound influence of tip surface thermal boundary condition on heat transfer and OTL flow was revealed by the first-of-its-kind experimental data obtained in the present experimental study.
