Study of Tip Vortex Cavitation Inception Using Navier-Stokes Computation and Bubble Dynamics Model

The Rayleigh-Plesset bubble dynamics equation coupled with the bubble motion equation developed by Johnson and Hsieh was applied to study the real flow effects on the prediction of cavitation inception in tip vortex flows. A three-dimensional steady-state tip vortex flow obtained from a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes computation was used as a prescribed flow field through which the bubble was passively convected. A “window of opportunity” through which a candidate bubble must pass in order to be drawn into the tip-vortex core and cavitate was determined for different initial bubble sizes. It was found that bubbles with larger initial size can be entrained into the tip-vortex core from a larger window size and also had a higher cavitation inception number.

A Surface-Averaged Pressure (SAP) spherical bubble dynamics model accounting for a statistical nuclei size distribution was used to model the acoustic signals generated by cavitating bubbles near inception in a tip vortex flow. The flow field generated by finite-span elliptic hydrofoils is obtained by Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes computations. An “acoustic” criterion which defines the cavitation inception by counting the number of acoustical signal peaks that exceed a certain level per unit time was applied to deduce the cavitation inception number for different scales. It was found that the larger scale results in more cavitation inception events per unite time because more nuclei are excited by the tip vortex at the larger scale. The nuclei size was seen to have an important effect on cavitation inception number with scaling effects due to nuclei increasing as nuclei sizes decreases.

The acoustic pressure generated by cavitation inception in a tip vortex flow was simulated in water containing a realistic bubble nuclei size distribution using a surface-averaged pressure (SAP) spherical bubble dynamics model. The flow field was obtained by the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes computations for three geometrically similar scales of a finite-span elliptic hydrofoil. An “acoustic” criterion, which defines cavitation inception as the flow condition at which the number of acoustical “peaks” above a pre-selected pressure level exceeds a reference number per unit time, was applied to the three scales. It was found that the scaling of cavitation inception depended on the reference values (pressure amplitude and number of peaks) selected. Scaling effects (i.e., deviation from the classical σi∝Re0.4) increase as the reference inception criteria become more stringent (lower threshold pressures and less number of peaks). Larger scales tend to detect more cavitation inception events per unit time than obtained by classical scaling because a relatively larger number of nuclei are excited by the tip vortex at the larger scale due to simultaneous increase of the nuclei capture area and of the size of the vortex core. The average nuclei size in the nuclei distribution was also found to have an important impact on cavitation inception number. Scaling effects (i.e., deviation from classical expressions) become more important as the average nuclei size decreases.

Velocity field around a ship cavitating propeller is investigated based on the viscous multiphase flow theory. Using a hybrid grid, the unsteady Navier-stokes (N-S) and the bubble dynamics equations are solved in this paper to predict the velocity in a propeller wake and the vapor volume fraction on the back side of propeller blade for a uniform inflow. Compared with experimental results, the numerical predictions of cavitation and axial velocity coincide with the measured data. The evolution of tip vortex is shown, and the interaction between the tip vortex of the current blade and the wake of the next one occurs in the far propeller wake. The frequency of velocity signals changes from shaft rate to blade rate. The phenomena reflect the instability of propeller wake.

The interactions between the main hull and demi-hull of trimarans have been arousing increasing attention, and detailed circumferential flow fields greatly influence trimaran research. In this research, the unsteady wake flow field of a trimaran was obtained by Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations on the basis of the viscous flow principles with consideration of the heaving and pitching of the trimaran. Then, we designed an experimental method based on particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and obtained a detailed flow field between the main hull and demi-hull of the trimaran. A trimaran model with one demi-hull made of polycarbonate material with 90% light transmission rate and a refractive index 1.58 (close to that of water 1.33) was manufactured as the experiment sample. Using polycarbonate material, the laser-sheet light-source transmission and high-speed camera recording problems were effectively rectified. Moreover, a nonstandard calibration was added into the PIV flow field measurement system. Then, we established an inverse three-dimensional (3D) distortion coordinate system and obtained the corresponding coordinates by using optics calculations. Further, the PIV system spatial mapping was corrected, and the real flow field was obtained. The simulation results were highly consistent with the experimental data, which showed the methods established in this study provided a strong reference for obtaining the detailed flow field information between the main hull and demi-hull of trimarans.

The performance and cavitation characteristics of marine propellers and hydrofoils are strongly affected by tip vortex behavior. A number of previous computational studies have been done on tip vortices, both in aerodynamic and marine applications. The focus, however, has primarily been on validating methods for prediction and advancing the understanding of tip-vortex formation in general, rather than showing effects of tip modifications on tip vortices. Studies of the most relevance to the current work include computational studies by Dacles-Mariani et al. (1995) and Hsiao and Pauley (1998, 1999). Daeles-Mariani et al. carried out interactively a computational and experimental study of the wingtip vortex in the near field using a full Navier-Stokes simulation, accompanied with the Baldwin-Barth turbulence model. Although they showed improvement over numerical results obtained by previous researchers, the tip vortex strength was underpredicted. Hsiao and Pauley (1998) studied the steady-state tip vortex flow over a finite-span hydrofoil, also using the Baldwin-Barth turbulence model. They were able to achieve good agreement in pressure distribution and oil flow pattern with experimental data and accurately predict vertical and axial velocities of the tip vortex core within the near-field region. Far downstream, however, the computed flow field was overly diffused within the tip vortex core. Hsiao and Pauley (1999) also carried out a computational study of the tip vortex flow generated by a marine propeller. The general characteristics of the flow were well predicted but the vortex core was again overly diffused.

To study the three-dimensional effects on the dynamic-stall characteristics of a rotor blade, the unsteady flowfields of the finite wing and rotor were simulated under dynamic-stall conditions, respectively. Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) equations coupled with a third-order Roe–MUSCL spatial discretization scheme were chosen as the governing equations to predict the three-dimensional flowfields. It is indicated from the simulated results of a finite wing that dynamic stall would be restricted near the wing tip due to the influence of the wing-tip vortex. By comparing the simulated results of the finite wing with the spanwise flow, it is indicated that the spanwise flow would arouse vortex accumulation. Consequently, the dynamic stall is restricted near the wing root and aggravated near the wing tip. By comparing the simulated results of a rotor in forward flight, it is indicated that the dynamic stall of the rotor would be inhibited due to the effects of the spanwise flow and Coriolis force. This work fills the gap regarding the insufficient three-dimensional dynamic stall of a helicopter rotor, and could be used to guide rotor airfoil shape design in the future.

AbstractWe report a self-similar behaviour of solutions (obtained numerically) of the Navier–Stokes equations behind a single-blade rotor. That is, the helical vortex core in the wake of a rotating blade is self-similar as a function of its age. Profiles of vorticity and azimuthal velocity in the vortex core are characterized, their similarity variables are identified and scaling laws of these variables are given. Solutions of incompressible three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations for Reynolds numbers up to $Re= 2000$ are considered.

This paper discusses tests conducted in the hydrodynamic tunnel of the University of Grenoble on a 3D oscillating hydrofoil. Visualization of unsteady tip vortex cavitation indicates a strong influence of the water nuclei content. The investigation was focused on the influence of the oscillation frequency on tip vortex cavitation inception. For very low nuclei content, cavitation inception is strongly delayed as compared to the steady-state results at very small oscillation frequencies. This delay is significantly reduced by nuclei seeding. The results can be explained by assuming that the time required for the inception of cavitation in the tip vortex corresponds to the time necessary for a cavitation nucleus to be captured by the vortex core.

The present paper is devoted to an analysis of tip vortex cavitation under confined situations. The tip vortex is generated by a three-dimensional foil of elliptical planform, and the confinement is achieved by flat plates set perpendicular to the span, at an adjustable distance from the tip. In the range of variation of the boundary-layer thickness investigated, no significant interaction was observed between the tip vortex and the boundary layer which develops on the confinement plate. In particular, the cavitation inception index for tip vortex cavitation does not depend significantly upon the length of the plate upstream of the foil. On the contrary, tip clearance has a strong influence on the non-cavitating structure of the tip vortex and consequently on the inception of cavitation in its core. The tangential velocity profiles measured by a laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV) technique through the vortex, between the suction and the pressure sides of the foil, are strongly asymmetric near the tip. They become more and more symmetric downstream and the confinement speeds up the symmetrization process. When the tip clearance is reduced to a few millimetres, the two extrema of the velocity profiles increase. This increase results in a decrease of the minimum pressure in the vortex centre and accounts for the smaller resistance to cavitation observed when tip clearance is reduced. For smaller values of tip clearance, a reduction of tip clearance induces on the contrary a significant reduction in the maxima of the tangential velocity together with a significant increase in the size of the vortex core estimated along the confinement plate. Hence, the resistance to cavitation is much higher for such small values of tip clearance and in practice, no tip vortex cavitation is observed for tip clearances below 1.5 mm. The cavitation number for the inception of tip vortex cavitation does not correlate satisfactorily with the lift coefficient, contrary to classical results obtained without any confinement. Owing to the specificity introduced by the confinement, the usual procedure developed in an infinite medium to estimate the vortex strength from LDV measurements is not applicable here. Hence, a new quantity homogeneous to a circulation had to be defined on the basis of the maximum tangential velocity and the core size, which proved to be better correlated to the cavitation inception data.

It is important to predict the propeller tip vortex flow and its effect on hull vibration and noise. In our previous work, the tip vortex flow of the David Taylor Model Basin (DTMB) 5168 propeller model has been studied based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation (RANS) solution using various eddy viscosity and Reynolds Stress turbulence models. A set of structural grids were used, however, large Jacobian values of the structural grids around the propeller tip region led to the convergence problem and inaccurate solutions. In the present work, the numerical prediction of the same propeller model was improved by using a steady-state RANS solver simpleFoam in OpenFOAM with locally refined unstructured grid along the tip vortex trajectory. The computed thrust and torque coefficients and the velocity components across the vortex core are compared with experimental data and results in the previous studies. Improvement in the prediction of velocity components across the tip vortex core were achieved.
