Modeling Reynolds-Number Effects in Wall-Bounded Turbulent Flows

Recent experimental and direct numerical simulation data of two-dimensional, isothermal wall-bounded incompressible turbulent flows indicate that Reynolds-number effects are not only present in the outer layer but are also quite noticeable in the inner layer. The effects are most apparent when the turbulence statistics are plotted in terms of inner variables. With recent advances made in Reynolds-stress and near-wall modeling, a near-wall Reynolds-stress closure based on a recently proposed quasi-linear model for the pressure strain tensor is used to analyse wall-bounded flows over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The Reynolds number varies from a low of 180, based on the friction velocity and pipe radius/channel half-width, to 15406, based on momentum thickness and free stream velocity. In all the flow cases examined, the model replicates the turbulence statistics, including the Reynolds-number effects observed in the inner and outer layers, quite well. Furthermore, the model reproduces the correlation proposed for the location of the peak shear stress and an appropriately defined Reynolds number, and the variations of the near-wall asymptotes with Reynolds numbers. It is conjectured that the ability of the model to replicate the asymptotic behavior of the near-wall flow is most responsible for the correct prediction of the Reynolds-number effects.

Careful reassessment of new and pre-existing data shows that recorded scatter in the hot-wire-measured near-wall peak in viscous-scaled streamwise turbulence intensity is due in large part to the simultaneous competing effects of the Reynolds number and viscous-scaled wire length l+. An empirical expression is given to account for these effects. These competing factors can explain much of the disparity in existing literature, in particular explaining how previous studies have incorrectly concluded that the inner-scaled near-wall peak is independent of the Reynolds number. We also investigate the appearance of the so-called outer peak in the broadband streamwise intensity, found by some researchers to occur within the log region of high-Reynolds-number boundary layers. We show that the ‘outer peak’ is consistent with the attenuation of small scales due to large l+. For turbulent boundary layers, in the absence of spatial resolution problems, there is no outer peak up to the Reynolds numbers investigated here (Reτ = 18830). Beyond these Reynolds numbers – and for internal geometries – the existence of such peaks remains open to debate. Fully mapped energy spectra, obtained with a range of l+, are used to demonstrate this phenomenon. We also establish the basis for a ‘maximum flow frequency’, a minimum time scale that the full experimental system must be capable of resolving, in order to ensure that the energetic scales are not attenuated. It is shown that where this criterion is not met (in this instance due to insufficient anemometer/probe response), an outer peak can be reproduced in the streamwise intensity even in the absence of spatial resolution problems. It is also shown that attenuation due to wire length can erode the region of the streamwise energy spectra in which we would normally expect to see kx−1 scaling. In doing so, we are able to rationalize much of the disparity in pre-existing literature over the kx−1 region of self-similarity. Not surprisingly, the attenuated spectra also indicate that Kolmogorov-scaled spectra are subject to substantial errors due to wire spatial resolution issues. These errors persist to wavelengths far beyond those which we might otherwise assume from simple isotropic assumptions of small-scale motions. The effects of hot-wire length-to-diameter ratio (l/d) are also briefly investigated. For the moderate wire Reynolds numbers investigated here, reducing l/d from 200 to 100 has a detrimental effect on measured turbulent fluctuations at a wide range of energetic scales, affecting both the broadband intensity and the energy spectra.

Present study experimentally investigates the effects of ground clearance and Reynolds number on aerodynamic coefficients of smooth and sinusoidal leading-edge wings. Wind tunnel tests are conducted over a wide range of angles of attack from zero to 36 degrees, low Reynolds numbers of 30,000, 45,000 and 60,000, and also ground clearances of 0.5, 1 and ∞. Results showed that reduction of ground clearance and increment of Reynolds number cause the lift coefficient and the lift to drag ratio of both wings to be enhanced. Furthermore, the effects of Reynolds number and ground clearance on the smooth leading-edge wing are more than the sinusoidal leading-edge one. In addition, the sinusoidal leading-edge wing shows an excellent performance in the poststall region due to producing a higher lift and also by delaying the stall angle compared to the smooth leading-edge wing.

AbstractNumerical experiments that remove turbulent motions wider than ${ \lambda }_{z}^{+ } \simeq 100$ are carried out up to ${\mathit{Re}}_{\tau } = 660$ in a turbulent channel. The artificial removal of the wide outer turbulence is conducted with spanwise minimal computational domains and an explicit filter that effectively removes spanwise uniform eddies. The mean velocity profile of the remaining motions shows very good agreement with that of the full simulation below ${y}^{+ } \simeq 40$, and the near-wall peaks of the streamwise velocity fluctuation scale very well in the inner units and remain almost constant at all the Reynolds numbers considered. The self-sustaining motions narrower than ${ \lambda }_{z}^{+ } \simeq 100$ generate smaller turbulent skin friction than full turbulent motions, and their contribution to turbulent skin friction gradually decays with the Reynolds number. This finding suggests that the role of the removed outer structures becomes increasingly important with the Reynolds number; thus one should aim to control the large scales for turbulent drag reduction at high Reynolds numbers. In the near-wall region, the streamwise and spanwise velocity fluctuations of the motions of ${ \lambda }_{z}^{+ } \leq 100$ reveal significant lack of energy at long streamwise lengths compared to those of the full simulation. In contrast, the losses of the wall-normal velocity and the Reynolds stress are not as large as those of these two variables. This implies that the streamwise and spanwise velocities of the removed motions penetrate deep into the near-wall region, while the wall-normal velocity and the Reynolds stress do not.

AbstractThis study looks to find a suitable turbulence model for calculating pressure losses of ventilation components. In building ventilation, the most relevant Reynolds number range is between 3×104 and 6×105, depending on the duct dimensions and airflow rates. Pressure loss coefficients can increase considerably for some components at Reynolds numbers below 2×105. An initial survey of popular turbulence models was conducted for a selected test case of a bend with such a strong Reynolds number dependence. Most of the turbulence models failed in reproducing this dependence and predicted curve progressions that were too flat and only applicable for higher Reynolds numbers. Viscous effects near walls played an important role in the present simulations. In turbulence modelling, near-wall damping functions are used to account for this influence. A model that implements near-wall modelling is the lag elliptic blending k-ε model. This model gave reasonable predictions for pressure loss coefficients at lower Reynolds numbers. Another example is the low Reynolds number k-ε turbulence model of Wilcox (LRN). The modification uses damping functions and was initially developed for simulating profiles such as aircraft wings. It has not been widely used for internal flows such as air duct flows. Based on selected reference cases, the three closure coefficients of the LRN model were adapted in this work to simulate ventilation components. Improved predictions were obtained with new coefficients (LRNM model). This underlined that low Reynolds number effects are relevant in ventilation ductworks and give first insights for suitable turbulence models for this application. Both the lag elliptic blending model and the modified LRNM model predicted the pressure losses relatively well for the test case where the other tested models failed.

This paper provides a discussion of several aspects of the construction of approaches that combine statistical (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes, RANS) models with large eddy simulation (LES), with the objective of making LES an economically viable method for predicting complex, high Reynolds number turbulent flows. The first part provides a review of alternative approaches, highlighting their rationale and major elements. Next, two particular methods are introduced in greater detail: one based on coupling near-wall RANS models to the outer LES domain on a single contiguous mesh, and the other involving the application of the RANS and LES procedures on separate zones, the former confined to a thin near-wall layer. Examples for their performance are included for channel flow and, in the case of the zonal strategy, for three separated flows. Finally, a discussion of prospects is given, as viewed from the writer's perspective.

The performance of the low pressure turbine (LPT) can vary appreciably, because this component operates under a wide range of Reynolds numbers. At higher Reynolds numbers, mid and aft loaded profiles have the advantage that transition of suction side boundary layer happens further downstream than at front loaded profiles, resulting in lower profile loss. At lower Reynolds numbers, aft loading of the blade can mean that if a suction side separation exists, it may remain open up to the trailing edge. This is especially the case when blade lift is increased via increased pitch to chord ratio. There is a trend in research towards exploring the effect of coupling boundary layer control with highly loaded turbine blades, in order to maximize performance over the full relevant Reynolds number range. In an earlier work, pulsed blowing with fluidic oscillators was shown to be effective in reducing the extent of the separated flow region and to significantly decrease the profile losses caused by separation over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. These experiments were carried out in the High-Speed Cascade Wind Tunnel of the German Federal Armed Forces University Munich, Germany, which allows to capture the effects of pulsed blowing at engine relevant conditions. The assumed control mechanism was the triggering of boundary layer transition by excitation of the Tollmien-Schlichting waves. The current work aims to gain further insight into the effects of pulsed blowing. It investigates the effect of a highly efficient configuration of pulsed blowing at a frequency of 9.5 kHz on the boundary layer at a Reynolds number of 70000 and exit Mach number of 0.6. The boundary layer profiles were measured at five positions between peak Mach number and the trailing edge with hot wire anemometry and pneumatic probes. Experiments were conducted with and without actuation under steady as well as periodically unsteady inflow conditions. The results show the development of the boundary layer and its interaction with incoming wakes. It is shown that pulsed blowing accelerates transition over the separation bubble and drastically reduces the boundary layer thickness.

Abstract The incompressible steady-state fluid flow inside a lid-driven square cavity was simulated using the mass conservation and Navier-Stokes equations. This system of equations is solved for Reynolds numbers of up to 10,000 to the accuracy of the computational machine round-off error. The computational model used was the second-order accurate finite volume method. A stable solution is obtained using the iterative multigrid methodology with 8192 × 8192 volumes, while degree-10 interpolation and Richardson extrapolation were used to reduce the discretization error. The solution vector comprised five entries of velocities, pressure, and location. For comparison purposes, 65 different variables of interest were chosen, such as velocity profile, its extremum values and location, extremum values and location of the stream function. The discretization error for each variable of interest was estimated using two types of estimators and their apparent order of accuracy. The variations of the 11 selected variables are shown across 38 Reynolds number values between 0.0001 and 10,000. In this study, we provide a more accurate determination of the Reynolds number value at which the upper secondary vortex appears. The results of this study were compared with those of several other studies in the literature. The current solution methodology was observed to produce the most accurate solution till date for a wide range of Reynolds numbers.

The behaviour of fluid-particle acceleration in near-wall turbulent flows is investigated in numerically simulated turbulent channel flows at low to moderate Reynolds numbers, Reτ = 180~600). The acceleration is decomposed into pressure-gradient (irrotational) and viscous contributions (solenoidal acceleration) and the statistics of each component are analysed. In near-wall turbulent flows, the probability density function of acceleration is strongly dependent on the distance from the wall. Unexpectedly, the intermittency of acceleration is strongest in the viscous sublayer, where the acceleration flatness factor of O(100) is observed. It is shown that the centripetal acceleration around coherent vortical structures is an important source of the acceleration intermittency. We found sheet-like structures of strong solenoidal accelerations near the wall, which are associated with the background shear modified by the interaction between a streamwise vortex and the wall. We found that the acceleration Kolmogorov constant is a linear function of y+ in the log layer. The Reynolds number dependence of the acceleration statistics is investigated.

Internal rotating boundary-layer flows are strongly influenced by large circumferential strain and the turbulence field is anisotropic. This is especially true in the entry region of a rotating pipe where the flow is three dimensional, the centrifugal force due to fluid rotation is less important, and the circumferential strain created by surface rotation has a significant effect on the turbulence field near the wall. Consequently, viscous effects cannot be neglected in the near-wall region. Several low-Reynolds-number turbulence closures are proposed for the calculation of developing rotating pipe flows. Some are two-equation closures with and without algebraic stress correction, while others are full Reynolds-stress closures. It is found that two-equation closures with and without algebraic stress correction are totally inadequate for this three-dimensional flow, while Reynolds-stress closures give results that are in good agreement with measurements over a wide range of rotation numbers.
