Transition Mechanisms in Separation Bubbles Under Low- and Elevated-Freestream Turbulence

Through numerical simulations, this paper examines the nature of instability mechanisms leading to transition in separation bubbles. The results of two direct numerical simulations are presented in which separation of a laminar boundary layer occurs over a flat surface in the presence of an adverse pressure gradient. The primary difference in the flow conditions between the two simulations is the level of freestream turbulence with intensities of 0.1% and 1.45% at separation. In the first part of the paper, transition under a low-disturbance environment is examined, and the development of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability in the separated shear layer is compared to the well-established instability characteristics of free shear layers. The study examines the role of the velocity-profile shape on the instability characteristics and the nature of the large-scale vortical structures shed downstream of the bubble. The second part of the paper examines transition in a high-disturbance environment, where the above-mentioned mechanism is bypassed as a result of elevated-freestream turbulence. Filtering of the freestream turbulence into the laminar boundary layer results in streamwise streaks, which provide conditions under which turbulent spots are produced in the separated shear layer, grow, and then merge to form a turbulent boundary layer. The results allow identification of the structure of the instability mechanism and the characteristic structure of the resultant turbulent spots. Recovery of the reattached turbulent boundary layer is then examined for both cases. The large-scale flow structures associated with transition are noted to remain coherent far downstream of reattachment, delaying recovery of the turbulent boundary layer to an equilibrium state.

The development of turbulent spots in a separation bubble under elevated freestream turbulence levels is examined through direct numerical simulation. The flow Reynolds number, freestream turbulence level, and streamwise pressure distribution are typical of the conditions encountered on the suction side of low-pressure turbine blades of gas-turbine engines. Based on the simulation results, the spreading and propagation rates of the turbulent spots and their internal structure are documented, and comparisons are made to empirical correlations that are used for predicting the transverse growth and streamwise propagation characteristics of turbulent spots. The internal structure of the spots is identified as a series of vortex loops that develop as a result of low-velocity streaks generated in the shear layer. A frequency that is approximately 50% higher than that of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is identified in the separated shear layer, which is shown to be associated with convection of these vortex loops through the separated shear layer. While freestream turbulence is noted to promote breakdown of the laminar separated shear layer into turbulence through the generation of turbulent spots, evidence is found to suggest co-existence of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, including the possibility of breakdown to turbulence through this mechanism.

This paper provides detailed measurements of the flow in a ribbed coolant passage, and attempts to delineate the important mechanisms that contribute to the production of turbulent shear stress and the normal stresses. It is shown that the separated flow behind the rib is dictated by large-scale structures, and that the dynamics of the large-scale structures, associated with sweep, ejection, and inward and outward interactions, all play an important role in the production of the turbulent shear stress. Unlike the turbulent boundary layer, in a separated shear flow past the rib, the inward and outward interaction terms are both important, accounting for a negative stress production that is nearly half of the positive stress produced by the ejection and sweep mechanisms. It is further shown that the shear layer wake persists well past the re-attachment location of the shear layer, implying that the flow between ribbed passages never recovers to that of a turbulent boundary layer. Therefore, even past re-attachment, the use of statistical turbulence models that ignore coherent structure dynamics is inappropriate.

This paper presents an experimental study on shock-wave/turbulent-boundary-layer interaction unsteadiness and delves specifically into the shear layer’s role. A range of axisymmetric step-induced interactions is investigated and the scale of separation is altered by over an order of magnitude – mass in the recirculation by two orders – while subjected to constant separation-shock strength. The effect of the separated shear layer on interaction unsteadiness is thus isolated and its kinematics are characterised. Results point at a mechanism whereby the depletion of separated flow is dictated by the state of the large eddy structures at their departure from the bubble. Low-frequency pulsations are found to adjust in response and sustain a reconciling view of an entrainment–recharge process, with both an inherent effect of the upstream boundary layer on shear layer inception and an increase in the mass locally acquired by eddies as they develop downstream.

Boundary layer separation, transition and reattachment have been studied on a very high lift, low-pressure turbine airfoil. Experiments were done under high (4%) freestream turbulence conditions on a linear cascade in a low speed wind tunnel. Pressure surveys on the airfoil surface and downstream total pressure loss surveys were documented. Velocity profiles were acquired in the suction side boundary layer at several streamwise locations using hot-wire anemometry. Cases were considered at Reynolds numbers (based on the suction surface length and the nominal exit velocity from the cascade) ranging from 25,000 to 300,000. At the lowest Reynolds number the boundary layer separated and did not reattach, in spite of transition in the separated shear layer. At higher Reynolds numbers the boundary layer did reattach, and the separation bubble became smaller as Re increased. High freestream turbulence increased the thickness of the separated shear layer, resulting in a thinner separation bubble. This effect resulted in reattachment at intermediate Reynolds numbers, which was not observed at the same Re under low freestream turbulence conditions. Numerical simulations were performed using an unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) code with both a shear stress transport k-ω model and a 4 equation shear stress transport Transition model. Both models correctly predicted separation and reattachment (if it occurred) at all Reynolds numbers. The Transition model generally provided better quantitative results, correctly predicting velocities, pressure, and separation and transition locations. The model also correctly predicted the difference between high and low freestream turbulence cases.

The problem of laminar to turbulent transition in a boundary layer flow subjected to an adverse pressure gradient is relevant to many engineering applications. Under such conditions, the initially laminar flow within the boundary layer can undergo separation and then become turbulent upon reattachment, as transition is triggered by instabilities within the separated shear layer. In turbomachinery blades with high loading, the transition mechanism is further complicated by the presence of periodic wake disturbances shed by blades that move relatively in the upstream flow. The paper reports an experimental study of the effect of wake disturbances generated upstream on the development of a laminar boundary layer over a flat plate imposed with an adverse pressure gradient that is typical of a highly loaded front-stage compressor blade. Detailed velocity measurements using a hotwire are performed along the plate and the results are analysed both in the time domain and the frequency domain. Description of the major features identified is provided and the leading mechanisms that trigger the transition process are identified to be a possible combination of amplified Tollmien–Schlichting waves and the roll-up of vortices due to the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability of the separated shear layer.
