A prototype software system that automatically designs the gating and runner systems, which comprise the feed system, of injection molds is described. The system, called AMDS (Automated Mold Design System), integrates CAE, with iterative redesign and knowledge stored in a features representation of the part. Gating design involves the generation of the best gating configuration represented by number, location, and type of gates, and the determination of the best conditions under which plastic should enter through the gates. Runner design also involves the generation of a runner layout followed by the sizing of the runner segments. The design of both systems is iterative, whereby the design variables are changed, the new design analyzed, evaluated, and redesigned if necessary, until an acceptable design is obtained. The evaluation of the gating design is based on eighteen performance parameters, while the evaluation of the runner system is based on four performance parameters. The system has been tested on three-dimensional parts made up of planar rectangular wall features with holes as add-on features.

The detailed design of three-dimensional turbomachinery blades is a very challenging problem requiring multi-disciplinary analysis (MDA), efficient numerical optimization techniques and efficient shape parameterization techniques. Moreover, CAD systems have become an integral and critical part of the complete design process in various fields, and in particular in the field of turbomachine design. The connection of an automated design system to drive CAD geometry directly in the native CAD software is therefore mandatory in order to obtain an integrated design system that can be used in an industrial design chain. This paper presents and discusses an effort to incorporate these technologies into a single and integrated design system for the automatic optimization of turbomachinery blades. First, a brief summary of the algorithms and software used in this design system is presented. Then, the performance of this design system is first demonstrated on the automatic optimization of a counter-rotating fan stage. The fan is redesigned for several aerodynamic operating conditions as well as for multi-disciplinary objectives with constraints involving a CFD solver and structural mechanics FEM solver. The fan geometry is parameterized using 70 design variables and an optimum solution is found in 300 optimization cycles. The peak efficiency is increased by 1.5%, while the static stresses and dynamic vibration modes satisfy the constraints imposed during the optimization. Finally, a second application demonstrates the design optimization of a CAD model of the counter-rotating fan performed with direct integration to the CAD system using the CAPRI middleware. In this case the tip section of the first rotor is parameterized using 7 design variables. The efficiency is increased by 0.5% and the CAD integration in the optimization cycle is demonstrated.

The present knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of ribosomes is far too limited to enable a complete understanding of the various roles which ribosomes play in protein biosynthesis. The spatial arrangement of proteins and ribonuclec acids in ribosomes can be analysed in many ways. Determination of binding sites for individual proteins on ribonuclec acid and locations of the mutual positions of proteins on the ribosome using labeling with fluorescent dyes, cross-linking reagents, neutron-diffraction or antibodies against ribosomal proteins seem to be most successful approaches. Structure and function of ribosomes can be correlated be depleting the complete ribosomes of some proteins to the functionally inactive core and by subsequent partial reconstitution in order to regain active ribosomal particles.

ABSTRACT: This article focuses on steel cord deformation and force investigation within heavy-duty radial tires. Typical bending deformation and tension force distributions of steel reinforcement within a truck bus radial (TBR) tire have been obtained, and they provide useful input for the local scale modeling of the steel cord. The three-dimensional carpet plots of the cord force distribution within a TBR tire are presented. The carcass-bending curvature is derived from the deformation of the carcass center line. A high-efficiency modeling approach for layered multistrand cord structures has been developed that uses cord design variables such as lay angle, lay length, and radius of the strand center line as input. Several types of steel cord have been modeled using the developed method as an example. The pure tension for two cords and the combined tension bending under various loading conditions relevant to tire deformation have been simulated by a finite element analysis (FEA). Good agreement has been found between experimental and FEA-determined tension force-displacement curves, and the characteristic structural and plastic deformation phases have been revealed by the FE simulation. Furthermore, some interesting local stress and deformation patterns under combined tension and bending are found that have not been previously reported. In addition, an experimental cord force measurement approach is included in this article.

This paper presents current research trends and prospects of utilizing additive manufacturing (AM) techniques to manufacture electrical machines. Modern-day machine applications require extraordinary performance parameters such as high power-density, integrated functionalities, improved thermal, mechanical & electromagnetic properties. AM offers a higher degree of design flexibility to achieve these performance parameters, which is impossible to realize through conventional manufacturing techniques. AM has a lot to offer in every aspect of machine fabrication, such that from size/weight reduction to the realization of complex geometric designs. However, some practical limitations of existing AM techniques restrict their utilization in large scale production industry. The introduction of three-dimensional asymmetry in machine design is an aspect that can be exploited most with the prevalent level of research in AM. In order to take one step further towards the enablement of large-scale production of AM-built electrical machines, this paper also discusses some machine types which can best utilize existing developments in the field of AM.

AbstractDistribution of wax in laser printer toner was observed using an ultra-high-voltage (UHV) and a medium-voltage transmission electron microscope (TEM). As the radius of the wax spans a hundred to greater than a thousand nanometers, its three-dimensional recognition via TEM requires large depth of focus (DOF) for a volumetric specimen. A tomogram with a series of the captured images would allow the determination of their spatial distribution. In this study, bright-field (BF) images acquired with UHV-TEM at a high tilt angle prevented the construction of the tomogram. Conversely, the Z-contrast images acquired by the medium-voltage TEM produced a successful tomogram. The spatial resolution for both is discussed, illustrating that the image degradation was primarily caused by beam divergence of the Z-contrast image and the combination of DOF and chromatic aberration of the BF image from the UHV-TEM.
