Harmonic Synthesis Design Methodology for Dynamic Spring Balancing

A new spring balancing technique, called a two-phase optimization method, is presented. Phase 1 uses harmonic synthesis to provide a system configuration which achieves an approximation to a desired dynamic system response. Phase 2 uses results of harmonic synthesis as initial conditions for dynamic system optimization. Optimization techniques compensate for nonlinearities in machine dynamics. Example applications to robot manipulators and to walking machine legs are presented and discussed.

Abstract The dynamic system response curve (DSRC) has its origin in correcting model variables of hydrologic models to improve the accuracy of flood prediction. The DSRC method can lead to unstable performance since the least squares (LS) method, employed by DSRC to estimate the errors, often breaks down for ill-posed problems. A previous study has shown that under certain assumptions the DSRC method can be regarded as a specific form of the numerical solution of the Fredholm equation of the first kind, which is a typical ill-posed problem. This paper introduces the truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) to propose an improved version of the DSRC method (TSVD-DSRC). The proposed method is extended to correct the initial conditions of a conceptual hydrological model. The usefulness of the proposed method is first demonstrated via a synthetic case study where both the perturbed initial conditions, the true initial conditions, and the corrected initial conditions are precisely known. Then the proposed method is used in two real basins. The results measured by two different criteria clearly demonstrate that correcting the initial conditions of hydrological models has significantly improved the model performance. Similar good results are obtained for the real case study.

In this paper we derive and implement a maximum‐likelihood deconvolution (MLD) algorithm, based on the same channel and statistical models used by Kormylo and Mendel (1983a), that leads to many fewer computations than their MLD algorithm. Both algorithms can simultaneously estimate a nonminimum phase wavelet and statistical parameters, detect locations of significant reflectors, and deconvolve the data. Our MLD algorithm is implemented by a two‐phase block component method (BCM). The phase‐1 block functions like a coarse adjustment of unknown quantities and provides a set of good initial conditions for the phase‐2 block, which functions like a fine adjustment of unknown quantities. We demonstrate good performance of our algorithm for both synthetic and real data.

Purpose TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design, www.ted.com/) Talks has been one of the most popular video systems. However, the current TED Talks system expressed its inquired videos as in a two-dimensional (2D) table, which is inconvenient for searching the relationships among videos and tags. This study converts the TED Talks table into a sphere by using optimization techniques to help users search for preferred videos. Design/methodology/approach There are five phases in this study as follows. Phase 1: Reorganize data of 36 tags and 108 videos; Phase 2: Allocate tags on the TED sphere; Phase 3: Allocate videos on the TED sphere; Phase 4: Develop an online interactive TED retrieval system; and Phase 5: Perform survey and evaluation. Findings One survey demonstrated that the TED Talks sphere is more convenient for searching videos, as it is more user-friendly because of its graphical user interface, more convenient to use, more useful for retrieving information and can facilitate a more responsive search for users’ preferred videos. Research limitations/implications The numbers of tags and videos able to be displayed on a sphere is limited by the capacity of an optimization software and hardware. Practical implications The proposed sphere system can be used by a large number of users of TED Talks groups. Social implications This sphere systems can also be applied to other fields which use 2D forms to display the relationships among objects. Originality/value This study uses an optimization method to convert a 2D form into a 3D sphere to highlight the relationships among numerous objects.

The present study examines the possibility of using an industrial stirred chemical reactor, originally employed for liquid–liquid mixtures, for operating with two-phase liquid–solid suspensions. It is critical when obtaining a high-quality chemical product that the solid phase remains suspended in the liquid phase long enough that the chemical reaction takes place. The impeller was designed for the preparation of a chemical product with a prescribed composition. The present study aims at finding, using a numerical simulation analysis, if the performance of the original impeller is suitable for obtaining a new chemical product with a different composition. The Eulerian multiphase model was employed along with the renormalization (RNG) k-ε turbulence model to simulate liquid–solid flow with a free surface in a stirred tank. A sliding-mesh approach was used to model the impeller rotation with the commercial CFD code, FLUENT. The results obtained underline that 25% to 40% of the solid phase is sedimented on the lower part of the reactor, depending on the initial conditions. It results that the impeller does not perform as needed; hence, the suspension time of the solid phase is not long enough for the chemical reaction to be properly completed.

Optimization of smart products requires optimizing both the artifact design and its controller. The presence of coupling between the design and control problems is an important consideration in choosing the system optimization method. Several measures of coupling have been proposed based on different viewpoints of the system. In this paper, two measures of coupling, a vector based on optimality conditions and a matrix derived from an extension of the global sensitivity equations, are shown to be related under certain conditions and to be consistent in their coupling determination. The measures’ physical interpretation and relative ease of use are discussed using the example of a positioning gantry. A further relation is derived between one measure and a modified sequential formulation that would give results sufficiently close to the true solutions.

Objective: The cytomorphological criteria of malignant endometrial lesions in cervical samples are less well described than those of cervical lesions. We wished to investigate if there were features in SurePath™ liquid-based cytology samples that would facilitate more accurate differentiation between benign and malignant endometrial cells. Study Design: This was a two-phase study, with a review of all SurePath™ samples reported as endometrial adenocarcinoma (n = 42) evaluating 12 cytological features in the first phase. In phase 2 (test set), all initial cases plus an additional 83 cases were reviewed using these 12 cytological features to predict the outcome. Results: Out of 12 cytological features evaluated in phase 1 (training set), nuclear chromatin pattern, apoptotic bodies and tingible body macrophages were found to be the most significant features determining malignant histological outcome. These 12 cytological features were re-evaluated in phase 2 (n = 125). Of 125 cases, 54 had a benign and 71 had a malignant or premalignant histological outcome, with a positive predictive value of 56.8%. Conclusion: Granular nuclear chromatin, tingible body macrophages and apoptosis in the background are the most significant factors in determining whether endometrial cells present in cervical samples represent malignancy or are benign. Using these features, relatively accurate predictions of endometrial pathology can be made.
