Three-Dimensional Numerical Simulations of Circular Cylinders Undergoing Two Degree-of-Freedom Vortex-Induced Vibrations

In an effort to gain a better understanding of vortex-induced vibrations (VIV), we present three-dimensional numerical simulations of VIV of circular cylinders. We consider operating conditions that correspond to a Reynolds number of 105, low structural mass and damping (m*=1.0, ζ*=0.005), a reduced velocity of U*=6.0, and allow for two degree-of-freedom (X and Y) motion. The numerical implementation makes use of overset (Chimera) grids, in a multiple block environment where the workload associated with the blocks is distributed among multiple processors working in parallel. The three-dimensional grid around the cylinder is allowed to undergo arbitrary motions with respect to fixed background grids, eliminating the need for grid regeneration as the structure moves on the fluid mesh.

The three-dimensional grids around the cylinder are allowed to undergo arbitrary motions with respect to fixed background grids, eliminating the need for tedious grid regeneration at every time step.

We simulate the flow past smooth and rough rigid circular cylinders that are either bare or outfitted with helical stakes. We consider operating conditions that correspond to high Reynolds numbers of 105 and 106, and allow for two degree-of-freedom motions when the structure is allowed to respond to vortex-induced cross flow and in-line forces. The computations are performed using a parallelized Navier-Stokes in-house solver using overset grids. For smooth surface simulations at a Reynolds number of 105, we use a Smagorinsky Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model and for the Reynolds number cases of 106 we make use of the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations with a two-layer k-epsilon turbulence model. The rough surface modifications of the two-layer k-epsilon turbulence model due to Durbin et al. (ASME J. Fluids Eng., 2001) are implemented to account for surface roughness effects. In all our computations we aim to resolve the boundary layer directly by using adequate grid spacing in the near-wall region. The predicted global flow parameters under different surface conditions are in good agreement with experimental data and significant VIV suppression is observed when using helically straked cylinders.

A new Multi-degree of freedom motor and its establishing of teeth layer parameters have been introduced in the paper, also including application method of database, namely using Quasi-Newton methods to solve the non-linear equations of the new motors magnetic circuit net, formed a refined method for designing and analyzing of motor. The establishment of 3d tooth layer parameters database, is provided for the calculation in the design of the new type motor conveniently.

Lean-burn gas engines equipped with an un-scavenged prechamber have proven to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions and fuel consumption, while mitigating combustion cycle-to-cycle fluctuations and unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) emissions. However, the performance of a prechamber gas engine is largely dependent on the prechamber design, which has to be optimised for the particular main chamber geometry and the foreseen engine operating conditions. Optimisation of such complex engine components relies partly on computationally efficient simulation tools, such as quasi and zero-dimensional models, since extensive experimental investigations can be costly and time-consuming. This article presents a newly developed quasi-dimensional (Q-D) combustion model for un-scavenged prechamber gas engines, which is motivated by the need for reliable low order models to optimise the principle design parameters of the prechamber. Our fundamental aim is to enhance the predictability and robustness of the proposed model with the inclusion of the following: (i) Formal derivation of the combustion and flow submodels via reduction of the corresponding three-dimensional models. (ii) Individual validation of the various submodels. (iii) Combined use of numerical simulations and experiments for the model validation. The resulting model shows very good agreement with the numerical simulations and the experiments from two different engines with various prechamber geometries using a set of fixed calibration parameters.

We present the first general metric for attractor overlap (MAO) facilitating an unsupervised comparison of flow data sets. The starting point is two or more attractors, i.e. ensembles of states representing different operating conditions. The proposed metric generalizes the standard Hilbert-space distance between two snapshot-to-snapshot ensembles of two attractors. A reduced-order analysis for big data and many attractors is enabled by coarse graining the snapshots into representative clusters with corresponding centroids and population probabilities. For a large number of attractors, MAO is augmented by proximity maps for the snapshots, the centroids and the attractors, giving scientifically interpretable visual access to the closeness of the states. The coherent structures belonging to the overlap and disjoint states between these attractors are distilled by a few representative centroids. We employ MAO for two quite different actuated flow configurations: a two-dimensional wake with vortices in a narrow frequency range and three-dimensional wall turbulence with a broadband spectrum. In the first application, seven control laws are applied to the fluidic pinball, i.e. the two-dimensional flow around three circular cylinders whose centres form an equilateral triangle pointing in the upstream direction. These seven operating conditions comprise unforced shedding, boat tailing, base bleed, high- and low-frequency forcing as well as two opposing Magnus effects. In the second example, MAO is applied to three-dimensional simulation data from an open-loop drag reduction study of a turbulent boundary layer. The actuation mechanisms of 38 spanwise travelling transversal surface waves are investigated. MAO compares and classifies these actuated flows in agreement with physical intuition. For instance, the first feature coordinate of the attractor proximity map correlates with drag for the fluidic pinball and for the turbulent boundary layer. MAO has a large spectrum of potential applications ranging from a quantitative comparison between numerical simulations and experimental particle-image velocimetry data to the analysis of simulations representing a myriad of different operating conditions.
