The response of a flexible rotor mounted in six bearing sets has been experimentally determined. One set of axial groove bearings and five sets of pressure dam bearings were tested. Conventional synchronous tracking was used in the analysis and other techniques utilizing an FFT analyzer were developed. The stability of the system was seen to strongly depend on the design of the step bearings. The dam bearings were also noted to lock into subsynchronous whip during deceleration after the system went unstable. The response of the system with varying degrees of unbalance is also analyzed and several structural resonances of the rotor system are discussed.

This study examines the response of a flexible rotor supported by load sharing between linear bearings and an auxiliary clearance bearing. The objective of the work is to develop a better understanding of the dynamical behavior of a magnetic bearing supported rotor system interacting with auxiliary bearings during a critical operating condition. Of particular interest is the effect of coupling between the bearing/housing and shaft vibration on the rotordynamical responses. A simulation model is developed and a number of studies are performed for various parametric configurations. An experimental investigation is also conducted to compare and verify the rotordynamic behavior predicted by the simulation studies. A strategy for reducing sychronous shaft vibration through appropriate design of coupled shaft/bearing/housing vibration modes is identified. The results are presented and discussed.

An experimental investigation has been carried out into the influence of side-plate flow restrictors on the performance of a squeeze-film damper bearing. The experimental rig used was a flexible rotor with a disc positioned mid-way between two squeeze-film damper bearings. One of the squeeze-film dampers was fitted with side-plates which could be adjusted and accurately located with respect to the squeeze-film damper journal. It has been found that the influence of the side-plate clearance on the ability of the squeeze-film damper to reduce the amplitude of the central disc can be considerable if the side-plate clearance is less than the radial clearance. As the side-plate clearance reduces towards zero, the effectiveness of the squeeze-film damper diminishes until the amplitudes obtained are the same as those measured when the rolling-contact bearing is rigidly supported. An interesting type of precessing elliptical orbit was discovered for conditions where the ‘jump’ phenomenon was operating.

When a flexible rotor is partially filled with liquid, the motion is unstable over some operating range. The extent of this operating range depends on various system parameters such as rotor damping, fluid viscosity, the amount of fluid present, etc. If the rotor is arranged so that it must tilt as it vibrates (as in the clamped-free configuration) then the tilt of the rotor greatly complicates the stability analysis. The source of the complication is that the fluid motion becomes three-dimensional. A three-dimensional stability theory is developed here and applied to a simple clamped-free rotor. The results show that the stability boundaries are influenced by both rotor and fluid “gyroscopic stiffening” effects. Brief experimental results are also reported.
