The current demands for high-performance gas turbine engines can be reached by raising combustion temperatures to increase power output. High combustion temperatures create a harsh environment that leads to the consideration of the durability of the combustor and turbine sections. This paper presents a computational study of a flow field that is representative of what occurs in a combustor and how that flow field convects through the first downstream stator vane. The results of this study indicate that the development of the secondary flow field in the turbine is highly dependent on the incoming total pressure profile. The endwall heat transfer is also found to depend strongly on the secondary flow field.

This paper presents a brief description and several illustrations of a new concept of marine reversing gears that utilize high-performance differentially driven epicyclic gear arrangements. This new marine power transmission has the potential to offer high reliability, simplicity, light weight, high mechanical efficiency, compactness, and technological compatibility with aircraft derivative marine gas turbine engines. Further, this new reversing gear minimizes the danger of driving the free turbine in reverse as might be the case with conventional parallel shaft reversing gear arrangements. To illustrate the weight reduction potential, a modern naval ship propulsion system utilizing an aircraft derivative gas turbine engine as the prime mover in conjunction with a conventional parallel shaft reversing gear can be compared to the subject reversing gear differential. A typical 18,642 kW (25,000 hp) marine gas turbine engine might weigh approximately 5000 kg (11,000 lb) and a conventional marine technology parallel shaft reversing gear might weigh on the order of 90,000 to 136,000 kg (200,000 to 300,000 lb). Using gear technology derived from the aircraft industry, a functionally similar differentially driven marine reversing gear might weigh approximately 13,600 kg (30,000 lb).

Unsteady stator-rotor interaction in gas turbines has been investigated both experimentally and numerically for some years now. Even though the numerical methods are still in development, today they have reached a certain degree of maturity allowing industry to focus on the results of the computations and their impact on turbine design, rather than on a further improvement of the methods themselves. The key to increase efficiency in modern gas turbines is a better understanding and subsequent optimization of the loss-generation mechanisms. A major part of these are the secondary losses. To this end, this paper presents the time-resolved secondary flow field for the two test cases computed, viz the first and the last turbine stage of a modern heavy duty gas turbine. A companion paper referring to the same computations focuses on the unsteady pressure fluctuations on vanes and blades. The investigations have been performed with the flow solver ITSM3D which allows for efficient calculations that simulate the real blade count ratio. This is a prerequisite to simulate the unsteady phenomena in frequency and amplitude properly.

Gas turbine engines are widely used as the marine main power system. However, they can’t reverse like diesel engine. If the reversal is realized, other ways must be adopted, for example, controllable pitch propeller (CPP) and reversible gearing. Although CPP has widespread use, the actuator installation inside the hub of the propeller lead to the decrease in efficiency, and it takes one minute to switch “full speed ahead” to “full speed astern”. In addition, some devices need to be added for the reversible gearing, and it takes five minutes to switch from “full speed ahead” “to “full speed astern”. Based on the gas turbine engine itself, a reversible gas turbine engine is proposed, which can rotate positively or reversely. Most important of all, reversible gas turbine engine can realize operating states of “full speed ahead”, “full speed astern“ and “stop propeller”. And, it just takes half of one minute to switch “full speed ahead” to “full speed astern”. Since reversible gas turbine engines have compensating advantages, and especially in recent years computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology and turbine gas-dynamics design level develop rapidly, reversible gas turbine engines will be a good direction for ship astern. In this paper, the power turbine of a marine gas turbine engine was redesigned by three dimensional shape modification, and the flow field is analyzed using CFD, in order to redesign into a reverse turbine. The last stage vanes and blades of this power turbine were changed to double-layer structure. That is, the outer one is reversible turbine, while the inner is the ahead one. Note that their rotational directions are opposite. In order to realize switching between rotation ahead and rotation astern, switching devices were designed, which locate in the duct between the low pressure turbine and power turbine. Moreover, In order to reduce the blade windage loss caused by the reversible turbine during working ahead, baffle plates were used before and after the reversible rotor blades. This paper mainly studied how to increase the efficiency of the reversible turbine stage, the torque change under different operating conditions, rotational speed and rotational directions, and flow field under typical operating conditions. A perfect profile is expected to provide for reversible power turbine, and it can decrease the blade windage loss, and increase the efficiency of the whole gas turbine engine. Overall, the efficiency of the newly designed reversible turbine is up to 85.7%, and the output power is more than 10 MW, which can meet requirements of no less than 30% power of rated condition. Most importantly, the shaft is not over torque under all ahead and astern conditions. Detailed results about these are presented and discussed in the paper.

These cooling methods include injection through film-cooling holes and injection through a slot that connects the combustor and turbine. This paper presents thermal and flow field measurements in the turbine vane passage for a combustor exit flow representative of what occurs in a gas turbine engine. The experiments were performed in a large-scale wind tunnel facility that incorporates combustor and turbine vane models. The measured results for the thermal and flow fields indicate a secondary flow pattern in the vane passage that can be explained by the total pressure profile exiting the combustor. This secondary flow field is quite different than that presented for past studies with an approaching flat plate turbulent boundary layer along the upstream platform. A counter-rotating vortex that is positioned above the passage vortex was identifed from the measurements. Highly turbulent and highly unsteady flow velocities occur at flow impingment locations along the stagnation line.

Small gas turbine engine manufacturers, with Armed Services support, are utilizing advanced manufacturing technology programs to incorporate net shaped components into both the current and the next generation of small high performance gas turbine engines. A coordinated program is underway to provide near-net shaped components which will minimize machining costs, save critical materials, and in some cases provide increased component capabilities. These programs include isothermal forging of titanium, casting of titanium, HIP’ed titanium powder metal techniques, diffusion bonded dual property approaches, and a diffuser case fabrication process. The manufacturing technologies presented in this paper are currently being targeted for small gas turbine engines.

Modern gas turbine requires sophisticated cooling technologies to avoid thermal failure due to the extreme operating environment. Film cooling is one of the most important cooling technologies used for gas turbine hot-section components, particularly for blade aerofoil surfaces and endwall. Previous research has shown that the endwall region is considerably more difficult to cool than the blade aerofoil surfaces because of the existence of complex secondary flow structures such as horse-shoe vortex, cross flow and passage vortex in the blade passage. Therefore, this study focuses on aerodynamics interaction of the cooling air through the upstream slot with the secondary flow field. Experiments carried out using 5-holes Pitot tube have revealed the secondary flow field at blade downstream of linear cascade of high pressure turbine. A baseline condition without any leakage flows was compared with the leakage ejection case. Finally, both cases were validated by simulations from commercial software, ANSYS CFX.

Exit combustor flow and thermal fields entering downstream stator vane passages in a gas turbine engine are highly non-uniform. These flow and thermal fields can significantly affect the development of the secondary flows in the turbine passages contributing to high platform heat transfer and large aerodynamic losses. The flow and thermal fields combine to give non-uniform total pressure profiles entering the turbine passage which, along with the airfoil geometry, dictate the secondary flow field. This paper presents an analysis of the effects of varying total pressure profiles in both the radial and combined radial and circumferential directions on the secondary flow fields in a first stage stator vane. These inlet conditions used for the first vane simulations are based on the exit conditions predicted for a combustor. Prior to using the predictions, these CFD simulations were benchmarked against flow field data measured in a large-scale, linear, turbine vane cascade. Good agreement occurred between the computational predictions and experimentally measured secondary flows. Analyses of the results for several different cases indicate variations in the secondary flow pattern from pitch to pitch, which attributes to the rationale as to why some airfoils quickly degrade while others remain intact over time.

The increased demand for high performance gas turbine engines has resulted in a continuous search for new base materials and coatings. With the significant developments in nickel-based superalloys, the quest for developments related to thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems is increasing rapidly and is considered a key area of research. Of key importance are the processing routes that can provide the required coating properties when applied on engine components with complex shapes, such as turbine vanes, blades, etc. Despite significant research and development in the coating systems, the scope of electrodeposition as a potential alternative to the conventional methods of producing bond coats has only been realised to a limited extent. Additionally, their effectiveness in prolonging the alloys’ lifetime is not well understood. This review summarises the work on electrodeposition as a coating development method for application in high temperature alloys for gas turbine engines and discusses the progress in the coatings that combine electrodeposition and other processes to achieve desired bond coats. The overall aim of this review is to emphasise the role of electrodeposition as a potential cost-effective alternative to produce bond coats. Besides, the developments in the electrodeposition of aluminium from ionic liquids for potential applications in gas turbines and the nuclear sector, as well as cost considerations and future challenges, are reviewed with the crucial raw materials’ current and future savings scenarios in mind.
