A Cavity Activation and Bubble Growth Model of the Leidenfrost Point

This study presents a new mechanistic model of the Leidenfrost point (LFP); the minimum liquid/solid interface temperature required to support film boiling on a smooth surface. The model is structured around bubble nucleation, growth, and merging criteria, as well as surface cavity size characterization. It is postulated that for liquid/solid interface temperatures at and above the LFP, a sufficient number of cavities (about 20 percent) are activated and the bubble growth rates are sufficiently fast that a continuous vapor layer is established nearly instantaneously between the liquid and the solid. The model is applicable to both pools of liquid and sessile droplets. The effect of surface cavity distribution on the LFP predicted by the model is verified for boiling on aluminum, nickel and silver surfaces, as well as on a liquid gallium surface. The model exhibits good agreement with experimental sessile droplet data for water, FC-72, and acetone. While the model was developed for smooth surfaces on which the roughness asperities are of the same magnitude as the cavity radii (0.1–1.0 μm), it is capable of predicting the boundary or limiting Leidenfrost temperature for rougher surfaces with good accuracy.

This study presents, for impinging droplets and sprays, a model of the Leidenfrost point (LFP); the minimum liquid/solid interface temperature required to support film boiling on a smooth surface. The present model is an extension of a previously developed sessile drop model, based on bubble nucleation, growth, and merging criteria, as well as surface cavity size characterization [3]. The basic concept of the model is that for liquid/solid interface temperatures at and above the LFP, a sufficient number of cavities are activated and the bubble growth rates are sufficiently fast that a continuous vapor layer is established nearly instantaneously between the liquid and the solid. For impinging droplets, the influence of the rise in interfacial pressure created by the impact of the droplet with the surface, must be accounted for in determining fluid properties at the liquid-solid interface. The effect of droplet impact velocity on the LFP predicted by the model is verified for single impinging droplets, streams of droplets, as well as sprays. While the model was developed for smooth surfaces on which the roughness asperities are of the same magnitude as the cavity radii (0.1–1.0 μm), it is capable of predicting the boundary or limiting Leidenfrost temperature for rougher surfaces with good accuracy.

Effective heat transfer techniques benefit the development of nuclear and fossil fuel powered steam generators, high power electronic devices, and industrial refrigeration systems. Boiling dissipates large heat fluxes while keeping a low and a constant surface temperature. However, studies of the fluid behavior surrounding the bubble and the heat transfer near the contact-line are scare due to difficulties of flow visualization, chaotic conditions, and small length scales. The preset study shows the simulation of bubble growth over a heated surface from conception to departure. The computation of mass transfer with interfacial temperature gradients leads to proper bubble growth rates. Models to include the interface sharpness uncover the dynamic and thermal interaction between the interface and the fluid. Results indicate that the nucleation of a bubble (in water at 1 atm with 6.2 K wall superheat) has an influence region of 2Db (where Db is the departure bubble diameter). In addition, results reveal a thin thermal film near the interface that increases the heat transfer at the contact-line region. Numerical bubble growth rates compare well with experimental data on single bubble nucleation.

Abstract Inception of the boiling, in pool or flow boiling, is the formation of the vapour bubble at active nucleation site. The bubble dynamics plays an important role in the boiling process. It is critical as it unfolds many facets especially when channel size is reduced to submicron. The detailed knowledge of the bubble dynamics is helpful in establishing the thermal and hydraulic flow behaviour in microchannel. In this paper, the bubble dynamics which include bubble nucleation at nucleation site, its growth, departure and motion along the flow in a microchannel are discussed in details. Different models are developed for the critical cavity radius are compiled and observed that they show large variation when compare. The bubble growth models are compiled and concluded that a development of more generalized bubble growth model is necessary to account for the inertia controlled and thermal diffusion controlled regions. The bubble at the nucleation site in a microchannel grows under the influence of various forces such as surface tension, inertia, shear, gravitational and evaporation momentum. Parametric variations of these forces are critically studied and reckoned that the slope of these forces seems to be reduced beyond 500 μm. Eventually, possible impact of the various factors such as operating conditions, geometrical parameters, and thermophysical properties of fluid on bubble dynamics in microchannel has been reported.

ABSTRACTWe report transient conductance measurements of liquid/solid interface velocities during pulsed laser melting of amorphous Si (a-Si) films on crystalline Si (c-Si), and a more accurate, systematic procedure for analyzing these measurements than described in previous work [1]. From these analyses are extracted relations between the melting velocities of a-Si and c-Si at a given interface temperature, and between the temperatures during steady-state melting of a-Si and c-Si at a given interface velocity.

In this paper, we study bubble nucleation and growth in a poly(methyl methacrylate) and CO 2 mixture by molecular dynamics simulations. It is known in the foaming industry that the bubble size has a more uniform distribution with a higher start-up pressure. The real physical reason remains unclear. In this work, we found that the free volume-rich polymer segments could adsorb many small-size bubbles in the region close to the polymer chain. The existence of these small bubbles limits the number of free CO 2 molecules, which is helpful for bubble stabilization. Moreover, the free volume of polymer segments decreases with an increase of the start-up pressure. As a result, the size of the large bubbles becomes more uniform with a higher startup pressure.

In microchannel flow boiling, bubble nucleation, growth and flow regime development are highly influenced by channel cross-section and physical phenomena underlying this mechanism are far from being well-established. Relative effects of different forces acting on wall-liquid and liquid-vapor interface of a confined bubble play an important role in heat transfer performances. Therefore, fundamental investigations are necessary to develop enhanced microchannel heat transfer surfaces. Force analysis of vapor bubble dynamics in flow boiling Silicon Nanowire (SiNW) microchannels has been performed based on theoretical, experimental and visualization studies. The relative effects of different forces on flow regime, instability and heat transfer performances of flow boiling in Silicon Nanowire microchannels have been identified. Inertia, surface tension, shear, buoyancy, and evaporation momentum forces have significant importance at liquid-vapor interface as discussed earlier by several authors. However, no comparative study has been done for different surface properties till date. Detailed analyses of these forces including contact angle and bubble flow boiling characteristics have been conducted in this study. A comparative study between Silicon Nanowire and Plainwall microchannels has been performed based on force analysis in the flow boiling microchannels. In addition, force analysis during instantaneous bubble growth stage has been performed. Compared to Plainwall microchannels, enhanced surface rewetting and critical heat flux (CHF) are owing to higher surface tension force at liquid-vapor interface and Capillary dominance resulting from Silicon Nanowires. Whereas, low Weber number in Silicon Nanowire helps maintaining uniform and stable thin film and improves heat transfer performances. Moreover, force analysis during instantaneous bubble growth shows the dominance of surface tension at bubble nucleation and slug/transitional flow which resulted higher heat transfer contact area, lower thermal resistance and higher thin film evaporation. Whereas, inertia force is dominant at annular flow and it helps in bubble removal process and rewetting.
