Influence of Carbon Fabric on Fretting Wear Performance of Polyetherimide Composite

A carbon fabric composite of Polyetherimide (PEI) was fabricated and studied for fretting wear behavior along with neat PEI. The operating parameters were load, temperature, amplitude and frequency of fretting. It was observed that carbon fabric proved to be significantly beneficial for reducing friction and wear of PEI. The friction coefficient of PEI was quite high and independent of operating parameters. For the carbon fabric composites (CFC) it reduced from 0.3 to 0.18 with an increase in load. On the other hand it showed marginal increase (0.18 to 0.28) with increase in temperature from 25°C to 200°C. The wear rate of the composite, CFC showed little variation with increase in load and temperature. Amplitude and frequency also proved to be important influencing parameters. Microscopic studies proved useful for understanding wear mechanism.

Carbon fabric/phenolic composites modified with potassium titanate whisker (PTW) were prepared by a dip-coating and hot-press molding technique, and the tribological properties of the resulting composites were investigated systematically using a ring-on-block arrangement under different sliding conditions. Experimental results showed that the optimal PTW significantly decreased the wear-rate. The worn surfaces of the composites and the transfer film formed on the counterpart steel ring were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to reveal the wear mechanisms. The transfer films formed on the counterpart surfaces made contributions to the improvement of the tribological behavior of the carbon fabric composites. The friction and wear of the filled carbon fabric composites was significantly dependent on the sliding conditions. It is observed that the wear-rate increased with increasing applied load and sliding speeds.

Super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) has excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, currently, there are few researches conducted on its fretting wear performance. This paper studies the influence of different heat treatment temperatures and medium environment on the fretting wear performance of SAF 2507 SDSS. Results show that the combined effect of the sigma phase and seawater lubrication can significantly improve the wear resistance of SAF 2507 SDSS. After treated with different heat treatment temperatures, different contents of sigma phases are precipitated out of SAF 2507 SDSS, which improves the wear resistance of the material to different degrees. In addition, the fretting wear performance of SAF 2507 SDSS also relates to the lubrication medium. In air, the friction and wear performance of SAF 2507 SDSS is poor, while in seawater, solution and corrosion products that acted as a lubricant dramatically improve the wear resistance of the material. Under the combined action of heat treatment and seawater lubrication medium, the friction coefficient and wear reduce by 70% and 91%, respectively.

Hybrid polyimide (PI)-polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/Nomex fabric composites and Nomex-PTFE/Nomex fabric composites were prepared with benzoxazine (BOZ) as the resin binder. The tribological properties and wear mechanisms of the two composites at different temperatures were investigated using a ball-on-disk wear tester. Before sliding wear tests, a thermo-aging test, thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis of PI and Nomex fibers were performed to evaluate the thermal properties of the two reinforcing fibers. After each wear test, scanning electron microscopy was employed to analyze the morphologies of the worn surfaces of the composite. The results of sliding wear tests show that the difference between the tribological properties of the two composites is small at room temperature. However, the hybrid PI-PTFE/Nomex fabric composite achieves better tribological properties at high temperatures compared with the hybrid Nomex-PTFE/Nomex fabric composite, which suffered wear failure at 240℃. It is proposed that the excellent thermal mechanical property and thermal stability of PI fibers is the main factor that endows the PI-PTFE/Nomex/BOZ composite with a more favorable tribological property at high temperatures. Moreover, the influence of the increasing temperature on the tribological properties of the two composites was also investigated.

The grind-hardening technology utilizes the grinding heat to harden the surface of the workpiece. The friction and wear performance of the grind-hardened layer is one of the important parameters. In this paper, the friction and wear performance of the grind-hardened layer was studied by the friction and wear experiment. The wear rate and the friction coefficient of the grind-hardened steel were studied by comparing with conventional hardened steel and non-hardened steel. The surface worn morphology and the collected wear debris of the grind-hardened steel were observed during the experiment. The wear mechanism of the grind-hardened steel was analyzed under different friction conditions.

Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) is an additive manufacturing technology used to produce metal-based materials. PBF materials have a unique microstructure as a result from repeated and sharp heating/cooling cycles. Many researches have been carried out on relations between processing parameters of the PBF technology, obtained microstructures and mechanical properties. However, there are few studies on the tribological properties of PBF materials at various contact conditions. This article describes previous and recent studies related to the friction performance. This is a critical aspect if PBF materials are applied to friction pair components. This paper discusses wear rates and wear mechanisms of PBF materials under dry friction, boundary lubrication and micro-motion conditions. PBF materials have higher hardness due to fine grains. PBF materials have a higher wear resistance than traditional materials due to their solid solution strengthening. In addition, hard particles on the surface of PBF components can effectively reduce wear. The reasonable combination of process parameters can effectively improve the density of parts and thus further improve the wear resistance. This review paper summarized the wear behavior of PBF materials, the wear mechanism of metal materials from dry friction to different lubrication conditions, and the wear behavior under fretting wear. This will help to control the processing parameters and material powder composition of parts, so as to achieve the required material properties of parts and further improve the wear performance.

Carbon fabric reinforced phenolic composites are very attractive for use as friction materials under wet conditions due to their excellent self-lubricity, wear resistance, and high mechanical strength. However, brittle fracture of carbon fabric bundles during friction is one of the major problems that limit their application. In this work, MoS2 particles were used as additives and friction modifiers to improve the wear and friction behaviors. The composites containing different amounts of MoS2 particulates (0–20 wt%) were fabricated by impregnation technique. The influence of MoS2 on the tribological properties under oil-lubricated conditions has been studied systematically. The experimental results revealed that tribological characteristics such as coefficient of friction and wear resistance were changed significantly with the relative amount of MoS2. Addition of MoS2 within 15 wt% was found to decrease the wear rates of the composites, while 20 wt% MoS2-filled composites exhibited highest wear rate compared to other test samples. Increasing MoS2 content resulted in a rise in the wear rate of the counterparts. Wear mechanisms had been investigated by scanning electron microscope, which could support the observed wear performance.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the friction and wear performance of pure polycarbonate (PC) and 5-30 per cent wollastonite-filled (by weight) PC were comparatively evaluated under dry sliding conditions. Wear tests were carried out at room temperature under the loads of 5-20 N and at the sliding speeds of 0.5-1.5 m/s. Design/methodology/approach – The microstructures of the wollastonite, pure PC and composites were examined by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The friction and wear tests were realized using a pin-on-disk arrangement against the hardened AISI 4140 steel. Findings – The result of this study indicated that the coefficients of friction wear rate of the materials were significantly influenced by an increase in wollastonite content. The friction coefficient of the PC was getting decreased from 0.457 to 0.198 with an increase in wollastonite content, depending on applied loads and sliding speeds. On the other hand, the results showed that the wear rates of pure PC and wollastonite-filled PCs decreased with an increase in loads. The wear rate of the PC decreased from 1.2 × 10−6 to 8.7 × 10−6 mm3/m with an increase in wollastonite content, depending on applied loads. Originality/value – There are many reports which deal with the friction and wear performance of the polymers and polymer composites. However, the effect of wollastonite effect on tribological performance of PC has up to now not been extensively researched.
