Synthesis of Planar, Compliant Four-Bar Mechanisms for Compliant-Segment Motion Generation

Compliant four-bar mechanisms treated in previous works consisted of at least one rigid moving link, and such mechanisms synthesized for motion generation tasks have always comprised a rigid coupler link, bearing with the conventional definition of motion generation for rigid-link mechanisms. This paper introduces a new task called compliant-segment motion generation where the coupler is a flexible segment and requires a prescribed shape change along with a rigid-body motion. The paper presents a systematic procedure for synthesis of single-loop compliant mechanisms with no moving rigid-links for compliant-segment motion generation task. Such compliant mechanisms have potential applications in adaptive structures. The synthesis method presented involves an atypical inverse elastica problem that is not reported in the literature. This inverse problem is solved by extending the loop-closure equation used in the synthesis of rigid-links to the flexible segments, and then combining it with elastic equilibrium equation in an optimization scheme. The method is illustrated by a numerical example.

Abstract. This paper presents a geometric synthesis method for compliant mechanisms based on similarity transformation of pole maps. Motion generation is a typical and common mechanism synthesis task, so this study takes it as the design requirement to expound the proposed method. Most of the current research work relies on numerical solution of the nonlinear Bernoulli–Euler beam model, numerical simulations or physical experiments to study the synthesis method of compliant mechanisms. There is a lack of simpler and more efficient methods to achieve motion generation of compliant mechanisms with various topologies. This study is based on pole map which is a geometric tool to describe the motion of rigid-body mechanisms. In this paper, we first demonstrate the feasibility of applying the similarity transformation of pole map to compliant mechanisms. It is proved that the pole map of compliant mechanisms has the same characteristic as rigid-body mechanisms during similarity transformation. Then we present the procedure of synthesis method in detail and expound the establishment method of function module which can avoid the functional defects of the final designed mechanism. At last, we take the compliant geared linkages and compliant four-bar linkage as examples to illustrate the novel synthesis approach. The result is an applicable and effective synthesis method for motion generation of compliant mechanisms.

This paper presents a direct displacement synthesis method for the design of shape morphing skin structures using compliant mechanisms. The objective of this method is to design a skin structure that will deform to a desired final shape when acted on by a specific load. The method utilizes a ground structure geometry which can facilitate variable bending stiffness along the length of the skin using compliant spring members. Synthesis procedures involve the use of direct displacement to determine how the bending stiffness of the skin must vary to produce the desired shape change. The direct displacement synthesis method differs from other compliant mechanism synthesis methods found in literature, such as pseudo-rigid-body and continuum structure optimization, in the approach taken to solve for the unknown variables in the system. By using direct displacement to determine how the structure must respond to a specific load to achieve the desired shape change, the unknown variables within the system can be extracted directly without the use of optimization techniques.

Optimal design methods that use continuum mechanics models are capable of generating suitable topology, shape, and dimensions of compliant mechanisms for desired specifications. Synthesis procedures that use linear elastic finite element models are not quantitatively accurate for large displacement situations. Also, design specifications involving nonlinear force-deflection characteristics and generation of a curved path for the output port cannot be realized with linear models. In this paper, the synthesis of compliant mechanisms is performed using geometrically nonlinear finite element models that appropriately account for large displacements. Frame elements are chosen because of ease of implementation of the general approach and their ability to capture bending deformations. A method for nonlinear design sensitivity analysis is described. Examples are included to illustrate the usefulness of the synthesis method.

This paper defines the generalized wavelet Fisher information of parameterq. This information measure is obtained by generalizing the time-domain definition of Fisher’s information of Furuichi to the wavelet domain and allows to quantify smoothness and correlation, among other signals characteristics. Closed-form expressions of generalized wavelet Fisher information for1/fαsignals are determined and a detailed discussion of their properties, characteristics and their relationship with waveletq-Fisher information are given. Information planes of1/fsignals Fisher information are obtained and, based on these, potential applications are highlighted. Finally, generalized wavelet Fisher information is applied to the problem of detecting and locating weak structural breaks in stationary1/fsignals, particularly for fractional Gaussian noise series. It is shown that by using a joint Fisher/F-Statistic procedure, significant improvements in time and accuracy are achieved in comparison with the sole application of theF-statistic.

Abstract Compliant mechanisms are a class of mechanisms that achieve desired force and motion transmission tasks by undergoing elastic deformations as opposed to rigid-body displacements in the conventional rigid-link mechanisms. Most of the previously reported synthesis studies in compliant mechanisms related to either partially-compliant mechanisms or fully-compliant mechanisms with joint compliance. Methods developed for fully-compliant mechanisms with link compliance addressed the issue of topology generation for desired deflections at discrete points on the mechanism. This paper presents a new, first-principles based synthesis procedure for fully-compliant mechanisms with link compliance — that is, distributed-compliant mechanisms — for continuous shape change requirements in a particular segment of a mechanism. The general approach presented in this paper for the synthesis of distributed compliant mechanisms is shown to be well suited for application in the design of adaptive structures, an emerging class of high-performance structural systems. The current trend in the design of adaptive structures is to embed structures with force or strain inducing “smart” materials to serve as distributed actuators. Potential advantages of using the distributed compliance scheme over the distributed actuation scheme in the design of adaptive structures include a significant reduction in the number of required actuators and controls.

The purpose of the article is to examine the civil law nature of electronic money. The subject of the research is the features of the civil law nature of electronic money. Methodology. Research methods are chosen based on the object, subject and purpose of the study. The study used general scientific and special methods of legal science. Thus, the analysis and synthesis method as well as the logical method were used to formulate a holistic view on electronic money, their features and legal nature. The logical-semantic method was used to establish the meaning of the concepts “electronic money”, “non-cash money”, “payment instrument”, “electronic payment instrument”. The comparative method was used when analyzing scientific categories, definitions and approaches. The legal modeling method was applied to formulate the author’s definition of the term “electronic money”. Results. The article generalizes scientific views on the civil law nature of electronic money. A distinction has been made between electronic money and currency unit, non-cash money and the right to claim. As the result it has been established that electronic money is the monetary obligation. Practical implication. The study should assist in developing the unified approach to the issue of the civil law nature of electronic money. Value/originality. As the result of the study the author’s definition of the concept “electronic money” with regard to its civil law nature has been proposed.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The cities in which we live are constantly evolving. The active management of this evolution is referred to as urban planning. The according development process could go in many directions resulting in a large number of potential future scenarios of a city. The planning support system URB<sup>io</sup> adopts interactive optimization to assist urban planners in generating and exploring those various scenarios. As a computer-based system it needs to be able to efficiently handle all underlying data of this exploration process, which includes both methodology-specific and context-specific information. This article describes the work carried out to link URB<sup>io</sup> with a semantic city model. Therefore, two key requirements were identified and implemented: (a) the extension of the CityGML data model to cope with many scenarios by the proposition of the Scenario Application Domain Extension (ADE) and (b) the definition of a data model for interactive optimization. Classes and features of the developed data models are motivated, depicted and explained. Their usability is demonstrated by walking through a typical workflow of URB<sup>io</sup> and laying out the induced data flows. The article is concluded with stating further potential applications of both the Scenario ADE and the data model for interactive optimization.</p>

This review article deals with the synthesis, characterization and magnetic properties of Co-Ni nanoalloys. The various physical and chemical methods for the synthesis of Co-Ni alloy nanoparticles are discussed. Co-Ni alloy nanoparticles with different size and shape such as spherical, rods, wires chain-like assembly are found to depend on the synthesis method and experimental condition. The structure of Co-Ni alloys is eitherfcc,hcpor mixedfccandhcpphase and found to depends on size, shape and concentration of Co in the Co-Ni alloys. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration and Co to Ni ratio influence the shape of bimetallic Co-Ni nanoparticles. Pt nucleating agents produced smaller size of Co-Ni alloy particles compared to Ru and Ag. Higher Co concentration in the Co-Ni alloys also influences the size alloy particles. The magnetic properties of Co-Ni nanoalloys depend on the size, shape and composition of the binary alloys. Surface oxidation of Co-Ni alloy nanoparticles decrease the saturation magnetization and increases with Co concentration in the alloys. The shape of Co-Ni alloy nanoparticles has an influence on coercivity. The microwave absorption properties of the Co-Ni alloys found to depend on the shape, size and composition of the binary alloys. The absorbance peaks shifts to higher frequency with decrease in size of the alloy particles. Potential applications of Co-Ni alloys in various fields are highlighted.

In this work, CeO2 nanocrystal-decorated TiO2 nanobelt for forming a CeO2@TiO2 heterostructure. CeO2 plays a dual role in improving photocatalytic activity, not only by promoting the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers, but also by increasing visible light absorption of the photocatalyst as a photosensitizer. The as-prepared CeO2@TiO2 heterostructure demonstrates the performance of organic degradation and H2 production (about 17 μmol/h/g, which is about 2.5 times higher than that of pure TiO2 nanobelts). Our work provides a facile and controllable synthesis method for high performance photocatalyst, which will have potential applications in synthesis clean/solar fuel, and photocatalytic water treatment.
