A Transport Model for the Deterministic Stresses Associated With Turbomachinery Blade Row Interactions

The unsteady process resulting from the interaction of upstream vortical structures with a downstream blade row in turbomachines can have a significant impact on the machine efficiency. The upstream vortical structures or disturbances are transported by the mean flow of the downstream blade row, redistributing the time-average unsteady kinetic energy (K) associated with the incoming disturbance. A transport model was developed to take this process into account in the computation of time-averaged multistage turbomachinery flows. The model was applied to compressor and turbine geometry. For compressors, the K associated with upstream two-dimensional wakes and three-dimensional tip clearance flows is reduced as a result of their interaction with a downstream blade row. This reduction results from inviscid effects as well as viscous effects and reduces the loss associated with the upstream disturbance. Any disturbance passing through a compressor blade row results in a smaller loss than if the disturbance was mixed-out prior to entering the blade row. For turbines, the K associated with upstream two-dimensional wakes and three-dimensional tip clearance flows are significantly amplified by inviscid effects as a result of the interaction with a downstream turbine blade row. Viscous effects act to reduce the amplification of the K by inviscid effects but result in a substantial loss. Two-dimensional wakes and three-dimensional tip clearance flows passing through a turbine blade row result in a larger loss than if these disturbances were mixed-out prior to entering the blade row. Turbulent flow between a rotating and a stationary disk is studied. Besides its fundamental importance as a three-dimensional prototype flow, such flow fields are frequently encountered in rotor–stator configurations in turbomachinery applications. A direct numerical simulation is therefore performed by integrating the time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations until a statistically steady state is reached and with the aim of providing both long-time statistics and an exposition of coherent structures obtained by conditional sampling. The simulated flow has local Reynolds number r2ω/v = 4 × 105 and local gap ratio s/r = 0.02, where ω is the angular velocity of the rotating disk, r the radial distance from the axis of rotation, v the kinematic viscosity of the fluid, and s the gap width.The three components of the mean velocity vector and the six independent Reynolds stresses are compared with experimental measurements in a rotor–stator flow configuration. In the numerically generated flow field, the structural parameter a1 (i.e. the ratio of the magnitude of the shear stress vector to twice the mean turbulent kinetic energy) is lower near the two disks than in two-dimensional boundary layers. This characteristic feature is typical for three-dimensional boundary layers, and so are the misalignment between the shear stress vector and the mean velocity gradient vector, although the degree of misalignment turns out to be smaller in the present flow than in unsteady three-dimensional boundary layer flow. It is also observed that the wall friction at the rotating disk is substantially higher than at the stationary disk.Coherent structures near the disks are identified by means of the λ2 vortex criterion in order to provide sufficient information to resolve a controversy regarding the roles played by sweeps and ejections in shear stress production. An ensemble average of the detected structures reveals that the coherent structures in the rotor–stator flow are similar to the ones found in two-dimensional flows. It is shown, however, that the three-dimensionality of the mean flow reduces the inter-vortical alignment and the tendency of structures of opposite sense of rotation to overlap. The coherent structures near the disks generate weaker sweeps (i.e. quadrant 4 events) than structures in conventional two-dimensional boundary layers. This reduction in the quadrant 4 contribution from the coherent structures is believed to explain the reduced efficiency of the mean flow in producing Reynolds shear stress.

AbstractWe performed large-eddy simulations of flow over a series of three-dimensional dunes at laboratory scale (Reynolds number based on the average channel depth and streamwise velocity was 18 900) using the Lagrangian dynamic eddy-viscosity subgrid-scale model. The bedform three-dimensionality was imposed by shifting a standard two-dimensional dune shape in the streamwise direction according to a sine wave. The statistics of the flow are discussed in 10 cases with in-phase and staggered crestlines, different deformation amplitudes and wavelengths. The results are validated qualitatively against experiments. The three-dimensional separation of flow at the crestline alters the distribution of wall pressure, which in turn may cause secondary flow across the stream, which directs low-momentum fluid, near the bed, toward the lobe (the most downstream point on the crestline) and high-momentum fluid, near the top surface, toward the saddle (the most upstream point on the crestline). The mean flow is characterized by a pair of counter-rotating streamwise vortices, with core radius of the order of the flow depth. However, for wavelengths smaller than the flow depth, the secondary flow exists only near the bed and the mean flow away from the bed resembles the two-dimensional case. Staggering the crestlines alters the secondary motion; the fastest flow occurs between the lobe and the saddle planes, and two pairs of streamwise vortices appear (a strong one, centred about the lobe, and a weaker one, coming from the previous dune, centred around the saddle). The distribution of the wall stress and the focal points of separation and attachment on the bed are discussed. The sensitivity of the average reattachment length, depends on the induced secondary flow, the streamwise and spanwise components of the channel resistance (the skin friction and the form drag), and the contribution of the form drag to the total resistance are also studied. Three-dimensionality of the bed increases the drag in the channel; the form drag contributes more than in the two-dimensional case to the resistance, except for the staggered-crest case. Turbulent-kinetic energy is increased in the separated shear layer by the introduction of three-dimensionality, but its value normalized by the plane-averaged wall stress is lower than in the corresponding two-dimensional dunes. The upward flow on the stoss side and higher deceleration of flow on the lee side over the lobe plane lift and broaden the separated shear layer, respectively, affecting the turbulent kinetic energy.

The vortical structures and turbulence statistics in the near wake of rectangular, trapezoidal, triangular and ellipsoidal tabs were experimentally studied in a refractive-index-matching channel. The tabs share the same bulk dimensions, including a 17 mm height, a 28 mm base width and a $24.5^{\circ }$ inclination angle. Measurements were performed at two Reynolds numbers based on the tab height, $Re_{h}\simeq 2000$ (laminar incoming flow) and 13 000 (turbulent incoming flow). Three-dimensional, three-component particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to study the mean flow distribution and dominant large-scale vortices, while complementary high-spatial-resolution planar PIV measurements were used to quantify high-order statistics. Instantaneous three-dimensional fields revealed the coexistence of a coherent counter-rotating vortex pair (CVP) and hairpin structures. The CVP and hairpin vortices (the primary structures) exhibit distinctive characteristics and strength across $Re_{h}$ and tab geometries. The CVP is coherently present in the mean flow field and grows in strength over a significantly longer distance at the low $Re_{h}$ due to the lower turbulence levels and the delayed shedding of the hairpin vortices. These features at the low $Re_{h}$ are associated with the presence of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability that develops over three tab heights downstream of the trailing edge. Moreover, a secondary CVP with an opposite sense of rotation resides below the primary one for the four tabs at the low $Re_{h}$. The interaction between the hairpin structures and the primary CVP is experimentally measured in three dimensions and shows complex coexistence. Although the CVP undergoes deformation and splitting at times, it maintains its presence and leads to significant mean spanwise and wall-normal flows.

The aim of this paper is to examine experimentally as well as numerically the flowfield resulting from the interaction between a twin circular inclined hot jets emerging into a cooling crossflow. The resulting flowfield is quite complex due to the presence of different vortical structures including the kidney vortex, the horse-shoe vortex, etc... The evolution of the twin inclined jets through the crossflow could be depicted by tracking the mean-flow velocity field and its associated turbulence statistics by means of the PIV technique. This evolution can be influenced by many factors. Herein, we will deal with that resulted by the injection nozzles’ inclination and the jets’ spacing. Then, we performed a three dimensional sample of the studied configuration in order to simulate the evolution of the resulting flowfield. For that, the Navier Stokes equations were simulated with an RSM second order turbulent closure model. Then a non uniform meshing was applied. A good agreement was obtained between the experimental data and the numerical modeling. After validation we could represent in addition to the available results, the temperature distribution and the effects the variation of the injection inclination and that of the jets’ spacing bring on it (on its spatial evolution).

A study of the effects of freestream swirl on the decay characteristics of wakes shed from a rotating blade row is presented. The freestream swirl behind the rotor causes the wakes to skew tangentially, stretching the wakes as they are convected from the rotor to the stator. The effect of stretching on wake decay is illustrated using a simplified two-dimensional model. The model is described and the results are compared to 1) measurements from a two-dimensional cascade facility where no stretching or skewing of the wakes occurs, 2) solutions obtained using a three-dimensional, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver, and 3) experimental wake measurements taken behind a low hub-to-tip ratio fan. For typical fan geometries with hub-to-tip ratios of approximately 0.5 and rotor-stator spacings of one to two rotor chord lengths, the wake can be stretched by over 50 percent. The stretching increases the mixing rate which leads to a reduction in the mean wake velocity deficit of approximately thirty percent and a widening of the wake of about fifteen percent. These effects account for much of the difference seen between cascade wake measurements and those taken behind rotating fan blade rows. It is therefore important to include such effects when using cascade data for prediction of fluid mechanic, acoustic, or structural phenomena associated with fan wakes. Finally, the study also suggests a potential for small (< 3 dB) reductions in wake-stator interaction noise through tailoring the fan loading distribution to produce particular span wise wake decay characteristics.

SummaryMeasurements are presented of the mean flow properties of some three-dimensional turbulent boundary layers re-developing after reattachment behind short separation bubbles yawed at 26.5° to the main stream. For these measurements, Rθ11varied from about 550 to 1450. It was found that, where the pressure gradient parameter (ν/ρu3τ1)∂p/∂s was not greater than about 0.05, the flow in the local external streamline direction conformed well with empirical laws for fully-attached two-dimensional layers with regard to the mean velocity profiles, shape parameter relationships and skin friction laws, giving support to the usual assumption that these two-dimensional relationships may be applied to the streamwise flow in three-dimensional layers, subject to the limitation on the pressure gradient parameter. The cross-flow profiles, on the other hand, were not generally fitted well by the often-used representations of Mager and Johnston. The variations of the kinetic energy dissipation coefficient and the entrainment rate were deduced for one of the layers, both quantities being found to be higher than those predicted by empirical relationships for conventionally-developing two-dimensional layers. However, the energy dissipation is in fair agreement with that in a similarly re-developing two-dimensional flow.

Interturbine diffusers provide continuity between HP and LP turbines while diffusing the flow upstream of the LP turbine. Increasing the mean turbine diameter offers the potential advantage of reducing the flow factor in the following stages, leading to increased efficiency. The flows associated with these interturbine diffusers differ from those in simple annular diffusers both as a consequence of their high-curvature S-shaped geometry and of the presence of wakes created by the upstream turbine. It is shown that even the simplest two-dimensional wakes result in significantly modified flows through such ducts. These introduce strong secondary flows demonstrating that fully three-dimensional, viscous analysis methods are essential for correct performance modeling.

The generation of internal gravity waves by a vertically oscillating cylinder that is tilted to the horizontal in a stratified Boussinesq fluid of constant buoyancy frequency, $N$, is investigated. This variant of the widely studied horizontal configuration – where a cylinder aligned with a plane of constant gravitational potential induces four wave beams that emanate from the cylinder, forming a cross pattern known as the ‘St. Andrew’s Cross’ – brings out certain unique features of radiated internal waves from a line source tilted to the horizontal. Specifically, simple kinematic considerations reveal that for a cylinder inclined by a given angle $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$ to the horizontal, there is a cutoff frequency, $N\sin \unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$, below which there is no longer a radiated wave field. Furthermore, three-dimensional effects due to the finite length of the cylinder, which are minor in the horizontal configuration, become a significant factor and eventually dominate the wave field as the cutoff frequency is approached; these results are confirmed by supporting laboratory experiments. The kinematic analysis, moreover, suggests a resonance phenomenon near the cutoff frequency as the group-velocity component perpendicular to the cylinder direction vanishes at cutoff; as a result, energy cannot be easily radiated away from the source, and nonlinear and viscous effects are likely to come into play. This scenario is examined by adapting the model for three-dimensional wave beams developed in Kataoka & Akylas (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 769, 2015, pp. 621–634) to the near-resonant wave field due to a tilted line source of large but finite length. According to this model, the combination of three-dimensional, nonlinear and viscous effects near cutoff triggers transfer of energy, through the action of Reynolds stresses, to a circulating horizontal mean flow. Experimental evidence of such an induced mean flow near cutoff is also presented.

An experimental investigation of plane turbulent jets in bounded fluid layers is presented. The development of the jet is regular up to a distance from the orifice of approximately twice the depth of the fluid layer. From there on to a distance of about ten times the depth, the flow is dominated by secondary currents. The velocity distribution over a cross-section of the jet becomes three-dimensional and the jet undergoes a constriction in the midplane and a widening near the bounding surfaces. Beyond a distance of approximately ten times the depth of the bounded fluid layer the secondary currents disappear and the jet starts to meander around its centreplane. Large vortical structures develop with axes perpendicular to the bounding surfaces of the fluid layer. With increasing distance the size of these structures increases by pairing. These features of the jet are associated with the development of quasi two-dimensional turbulence. It is shown that the secondary currents and the meandering do not significantly affect the spreading of the jet. The quasi-two-dimensional turbulence, however, developing in the meandering jet, significantly influences the mixing of entrained fluid.
