We show that the image of the Abel–Jacobi map admits functorially a model over the field of definition, with the property that the Abel–Jacobi map is equivariant with respect to this model. The cohomology of this abelian variety over the base field is isomorphic as a Galois representation to the deepest part of the coniveau filtration of the cohomology of the projective variety. Moreover, we show that this model over the base field is dominated by the Albanese variety of a product of components of the Hilbert scheme of the projective variety, and thus we answer a question of Mazur. We also recover a result of Deligne on complete intersections of Hodge level 1.

AbstractThe purpose of this note is to introduce a method for proving the non-existence of rational points on a coarse moduli space X of abelian varieties over a given number field K in cases where the moduli problem is not fine and points in X(K) may not be represented by an abelian variety (with additional structure) admitting a model over the field K. This is typically the case when the abelian varieties that are being classified have even dimension. The main idea, inspired by the work of Ellenberg and Skinner on the modularity of ℚ-curves, is that one may still attach a Galois representation of Gal(/K) with values in the quotient group GL(Tℓ(A))/ Aut(A) to a point P = [A] ∈ X(K) represented by an abelian variety A/, provided Aut(A) lies in the centre of GL(Tℓ(A)). We exemplify our method in the cases where X is a Shimura curve over an imaginary quadratic field or an Atkin–Lehner quotient over ℚ.

Let $Y$ be an abelian variety over a subfield $k\subset \mathbb{C}$ that is of finite type over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove that if the Mumford–Tate conjecture for $Y$ is true, then also some refined integral and adelic conjectures due to Serre are true for $Y$. In particular, if a certain Hodge-maximality condition is satisfied, we obtain an adelic open image theorem for the Galois representation on the (full) Tate module of $Y$. We also obtain an (unconditional) adelic open image theorem for K3 surfaces. These results are special cases of a more general statement for the image of a natural adelic representation of the fundamental group of a Shimura variety.

AbstractIn their 1990 paper, Bloch and Kato described the image of the Kummer map on an abelian variety over a local field, as the group of 1-cocycles which trivialise after tensoring by Fontaine's mysterious ring BdR. We prove the analogue of this statement for the universal nearly-ordinary Galois representation. The proof uses a generalisation of the Tate local pairing to representations over affinoid K-algebras.

AbstractLet $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}f\in S_2(\Gamma _0(N))$ be a normalized newform such that the abelian variety $A_f$ attached by Shimura to $f$ is the Jacobian of a genus-two curve. We give an efficient algorithm for computing Galois representations associated to such newforms.

Abstract We show that a nontrivial abelian variety over a Hilbertian field in which the weak Mordell–Weil theorem holds admits infinitely many torsors with period any given n>1 that is not divisible by the characteristic. The corresponding statement with “period” replaced by “index” is plausible but open, and it seems much more challenging. We show that for every infinite, finitely generated field K, there is an elliptic curve E_{/K} which admits infinitely many torsors with index any given n>1 .

We prove that the tautological ring of ${\mathcal{M}}_{2,n}^{\mathsf{ct}}$, the moduli space of $n$-pointed genus two curves of compact type, does not have Poincaré duality for any $n\geqslant 8$. This result is obtained via a more general study of the cohomology groups of ${\mathcal{M}}_{2,n}^{\mathsf{ct}}$. We explain how the cohomology can be decomposed into pieces corresponding to different local systems and how the tautological cohomology can be identified within this decomposition. Our results allow the computation of $H^{k}({\mathcal{M}}_{2,n}^{\mathsf{ct}})$ for any $k$ and $n$ considered both as $\mathbb{S}_{n}$-representation and as mixed Hodge structure/$\ell$-adic Galois representation considered up to semi-simplification. A consequence of our results is also that all even cohomology of $\overline{{\mathcal{M}}}_{2,n}$ is tautological for $n<20$, and that the tautological ring of $\overline{{\mathcal{M}}}_{2,n}$ fails to have Poincaré duality for all $n\geqslant 20$. This improves and simplifies results of the author and Orsola Tommasi.

A field K is called ample if every smooth K-curve that has a K-rational point has infinitely many of them. We prove two theorems to support the following conjecture, which is inspired by classical infinite rank results: Every non-zero Abelian variety A over an ample field K which is not algebraic over a finite field has infinite rank. First, the ℤ(p)-module A(K) ⊗ ℤ(p) is not finitely generated, where p is the characteristic of K. In particular, the conjecture holds for fields of characteristic zero. Second, if K is an infinite finitely generated field and S is a finite set of local primes of K, then every Abelian variety over K acquires infinite rank over certain subfields of the maximal totally S-adic Galois extension of K. This strengthens a recent infinite rank result of Geyer and Jarden.

AbstractUnder the local Langlands correspondence, the conductor of an irreducible representation of Gln(F) is greater than the Swan conductor of the corresponding Galois representation. In this paper, we establish the geometric analogue of this statement by showing that the conductor of a categorical representation of the loop group is greater than the irregularity of the corresponding meromorphic connection.
