Plant extracts as corrosion inhibitors have been extensively investigated and are found as an alternative to synthetic organic compounds. The corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1 M HCl by 15 compounds comprising of five phenylpropanoids from Alpinia galanga and other related compounds was explored experimentally using potentiodynamic polarisation procedures. The inhibition efficiencies determined experimentally for the various inhibitors were used in the Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) study with their molecular descriptors calculated using Dragon software. Penalised multiple linear regression (PMLR) was adopted as the method of variable selection using elastic net penalty. The elastic net results show low mean-squared error of the training set (MSEtrain) of 0.121 and test set (MSEtest) of 0.131. The model obtained can be applied to predict the corrosion inhibition efficiencies of related organic compounds. Results also reveal that the PMLR based on elastic net penalty is effective in dealing with high dimensional data.

The corrosion inhibition behaviour of four selected Mannich bases compounds, namely 3-((N-methyl,N-phenyl)-methyl)2,4-Acetylacetone(MPMAA),3-((N-phenyl)-methyl) 2,4-Acetylacetone (PMAA),3-((N, N-diethyl)-methyl) 2, 4-Acetylacetone(DMAA) and 3-((N, N-methyl)-methyl) 2, 4-Acetylacetone (MMAA) as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in 1M HCl solutions. Tafel polarization methods were performed to determine the corrosion parameters and inhibition efficiencies. Experimental results showed that PMAA is an excellent inhibitor for mild steel corrosion in 1M HCl solutions; showing a maximum efficiency 92.3% at concentration of 40mg/L. Polarization studies showed that the Mannich bases compounds can be regarded as mixed-type inhibitors and the inhibition efficiency of the four inhibitors followed the order PMAA > MPMAA > DMAA > MMAA. Then scanning electron microscope (SEM)techniques were also employed to examine the mechanism of corrosion inhibition property.

Chromate free corrosion inhibitors are searched for to mitigate the economic loss caused by mid-steel corrosion. Here, we show metal-free organic inhibitors having free coumarate anions that can be used either as direct corrosion inhibitors or incorporated into a polymer coating obtained by UV-curing. Four different ionic liquid monomers and polymer coatings with hexoxycoumarate anion and different polymerizable counter cations were investigated. Potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and surface analyses have verified their corrosion inhibition performance on a mild steel AS1020 surface. In the case of the coumarate ionic liquid monomers, the most promising inhibitor is the one coupled with the ammonium cation, showing an inhibition efficiency of 99.1% in solution followed by the imidazolium, pyridinium, and anilinium. Next, the ionic liquid monomers were covalently integrated into an acrylic polymer coating by UV-photopolymerization. In this case, the barrier effect of the polymer coating is combined with the corrosion inhibitor effect of the pendant coumarate anion. Here, the best polymer coatings are those containing 20% imidazolium and pyridinium cations, presenting a greater impedance in the EIS (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) measurements and less evidence of corrosion in the scribe tests. This article shows that the cationic moiety of coumarate based ionic liquids and poly(ionic liquid)s has a significant effect on their excellent corrosion inhibition properties for a mild steel surface exposed to aqueous chloride solutions.

Most of the corrosion inhibitors that are used in industry contain chemicals that are harmful to health and environment. Corrosion inhibitors derived from green sources are, therefore, believed to be a good option for replacing the chemical corrosion inhibitors. In this work, a green oleochemical corrosion inhibitor derived from Jatropha Curcas is introduced. The paper discusses the methodology of deriving the corrosion inhibitor as well as the experimental test conducted for evaluating its corrosion inhibition efficiency. The new oleochemical corrosion inhibitor was derived via two reactions. Jatropha oil was firstly saponified with sodium hydroxide to yield gras acid and glycerol, which was then esterified with boron fluoride in presence of excess methanol to produce the oil methyl esters, which is used as oleo-chemical corrosion inhibitor. To evaluate the oleo-chemical corrosion inhibitor, the corrosion rate of mild steel in NaCl corrosive medium with CO2 is tested at static condition and two dynamic conditions, namely 500 and 1500 rpm. This is to simulate the transitional and turbulent flow in a pipeline. At each dynamic condition, the proposed corrosion inhibitor was tested at concentration dosages of 0, 50, 100, and 150 ppm. The experiments results revealed a good performance of the new oleochemical corrosion inhibitor. The inhibition efficiency was found to be highly affected by the concentration of corrosion inhibitor. Total corrosion inhibition of the mild steel was noticed by using 150 ppm at dynamic condition of 500 rpm.
