The present study focuses on the effect of poly (acrylonitrile) (PAN)-g-poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) amphiphilic copolymer as an additive on fabrication of PAN-based UF hollow fiber membrane. The PAN-based hollow fiber membranes with different copolymer composition in dope solution were prepared via dry-wet phase inversion process. Compared to PAN-based membrane, membranes incorporated with PAN-g-PVA copolymer displayed good morphology and better hydrophilicity. It is found that pure water flux of the membrane incorporated with amphiphilic copolymer was 5 times higher than that of control membrane, recording 244.97 L/m2.hr when tested at 1 bar. Results also showed that the UF membranes incorporated with amphiphilic copolymer were able to retain efficiently bovine serum albumin (BSA) (66 kDa) and possessed better anti-fouling performance.

Polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fiber membranes have been widely used in many fields, such as ultrafiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, liquid/liquid or liquid/solid separation, gas separation, hemodialysis, and so on. In this paper, the sheet PES hollow fiber membranes were prepared. The morphology and performance of membranes can be controlled. By studying the influence of the compositions and conditions on the morphology and performance of PES hollow fiber membrane, the relationship of morphology and performance of the membrane is acquired. The additives were used such as glycerol, BuOH and PEG. In addition, immerse phase inversion was used as membranes preparation method. The morphology of the membrane was controlled by changing kinds of additive, concentration of additive and so on. It was found that the membrane morphologies were changed by additive obviously. Porosity , pure water flux, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) were used to characterize the morphology and performance of the membranes.

Nanocrystalline cellulose was used to blend with polysulfone to improve the hydrophicility and mechanical properties of PS hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane. The method of dry-jet/wet-spining was adopted to form the hollow fiber by the mechanism of phase-inversion. In addition, the content of NCC was increased gradually from 0% to 1 wt% to examin the permeation flux, rejection ratio of bovine serum albumin(BSA) and mechanical strength of PS hollow-fiber. We find that the pure water flux was soared when NCC content was increased. The tensile strength and elongation at break were also detected and calculated. The results indicated that the properties of PS hollow-fiber membrane with appropriate NCC content were enhanced. The hollow fiber membranes were also observed with scaning electron microscopy(SEM) to explore the porous structure

Polyethersulfone/zinc oxide mixed matrix hollow fiber membrane was fabricated using dry/wet phase inversion method. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (2 wt.%) were dispersed in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) solvent in the present of polyvinylepyrrolidene. The dope solution speed and take up speed was similar with performing the spinning process at room temperature. The produced membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. Membrane performance was evaluated using pure water flux (PWF), relative flux ration (RFR), and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency. From SEM analysis, it was found that the nanoparticles were well dispersed in the polymeric matrix. From AFM results, it was observed that the modified membrane has higher surface roughness. The PWF of the modified membrane was enhanced, while the RFR showed to increase due to rougher membrane surface. The NOM remaoval of PES/ZnO membrane was higher than that of PES membrane and reached to 27% compared to only 16.9 % for pristine PES.

Polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fiber membranes have been widely used in many fields, such as ultrafiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, liquid/liquid or liquid/solid separation, gas separation, hemodialysis, and so on. In this paper, the sheet PES hollow fiber membranes were prepared and post-processing of membranes were studied. Suction method and pressing hot water method can both increase pure water flux of membrane. Suction method is more efficient and with a smaller time to increase pure water flux. After membrane was soaked into glycerol/water solution, pure water flux of membrane increased greatly and the length shrinkage ratio of the membrane was more smaller.

Sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) was used as an additive to prepare hydrophilic poly(ethersulfone) (PES) hollow fiber membranes via non-solvent assisted reverse thermally induced phase separation (RTIPS) process. The PES/SPES/N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc)/ polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG200) casting solutions are lower critical solution temperature (LCST) membrane forming systems. The LCST and phase separation rate increased with the increase of SPES concentrations, while the casting solutions showed shear thinning. When the membrane forming temperature was higher than the LCST, membrane formation mechanism was controlled by non-solvent assisted RTIPS process and the also membranes presented a more porous structure on the surface and a bi-continuous structure on the cross section. The membranes prepared by applying SPES present higher pure water flux than that of the pure PES membrane. The advantages of the SPES additive are reflected by the relatively high flux, good hydrophilicity and excellent mechanical properties at 0.5 wt.% SPES content.

Hydrophilic Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes were prepared by wet-spinning method. The effects of technical parameters of acrylic acid grafted onto PVDF on the performance of hydrophilic PVDF membranes were investigated via orthogonal test, the technical parameters of preparation of hydrophilic PVDF membranes were determined, and hydrophilic PVDF membranes were prepared. Then hydrophilic PVDF membranes were characterized in terms of breaking strength, breaking elongation, rupture pressure, pure water flux and rejection. The fouling properties and the conditions of acrylic acid grafted onto PVDF were also examined. The results showed that acrylic acid had been grafted onto PVDF, the breaking strength and rupture pressure improved greatly, and the fouling properties were better than PS hollow fiber UF membrane.

It is well known that membrane with hydrophobic property is a fouling membrane. Polysulfone (PSf) membrane has hydrophobic characteristic was blended with a hydrophilic polymer, cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) in order to increase hydrophilicity property of pure PSf membrane. In this study, membrane casting solutions containing 17 wt% of polymer was prepared via wet phase inversion process. The pure PSf membrane was coded as PC-0. PSf/CAP blend membranes with blend composition of 95/5, 90/10, 85/15 and 80/20 wt% of total polymer concentration in the membrane casting solutions were marked as PC-5, PC-10, PC-15 and PC-20 respectively. All of the membranes were characterized in terms of pure water flux and permeability coefficient in order to study their hydrophilicity properties. The investigated results shows that increased of CAP composition in PSf blend membranes has increased pure water flux, permeability coefficient and porosity of the blend membrane which in turn formed membrane with anti-fouling property.

Abstract A new type of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) hollow fiber membrane (HFM) with five bores was prepared. The effects of Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), β-cyclodextrine (β-CD), Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) and Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80) and their combinations on the PVDF/PMMA five-bore HFMs were investigated. The performance and fouling characteristics of five-bore HFMs for dyeing wastewater treatment were evaluated. Results indicated that adding 5wt.% PVP could increase the porosity and water flux of the membrane but decrease the bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection rate. Adding 5wt.% β-CD significantly improved the tensile and rejection of the HFMs without showing effect on the increase of water flux. The characteristic of the HFMs with different additives combinations proved that the mixture of 5wt.% PVP and 1wt.% β-CD obtained the best membrane performance, with a pure water flux of 427.9 L/ m2·h, a contact angle of 25°, and a rejection to bovine serum albumin (BSA) of 89.7%. The CODcr and UV254 removal rates of dyeing wastewater treatment were 61.10% and 50.41%, respectively. No breakage or leakage points were found after 120d operation showing the reliable mechanical properties. We set the operating flux to 55 L/m2·h and cross flow rate to 10% which can effectively control membrane fouling.

The study was concerned with the treatment of tank dewatering produced water using hybrid microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) processes. The pre-treatment MF membrane was fabricated with polyethersulfone (PES), n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The UF membranes meanwhile contained additional component, i.e., titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in the range of zero to 1.0 wt.%. The membrane performances were analysed with respect to permeate flux, oil removal and flux recovery ratio. An increase in TiO2 nanoparticles enhanced the pore formation, porosity and pure water permeability due to improved hydrophilicity. The permeate flux of UF membranes increased with the increase of TiO2 nanoparticles and pressure. The oil removal rate by MF process was only 52.35%, whereas the oil rejection efficiency was between 82.34% and 95.71% for UF process. It should be highlighted that the overall oil removal rate could achieve as high as 97.96%. Based on the results, the PES membrane incorporated with 1.0 wt.% TiO2 was proved to be the most promising membrane at a transmembrane pressure of 3 bar. Although 1.0 M NaOH solution could be used as cleaning agent to recover membrane water flux, it is not capable of achieving good results as only 52.18% recovery rate was obtained.
