The static behavior of a reinforced concrete trough railway bridge is analyzed by finite element method. The influences of load distribution fashion, supporting width of the bearings and the additional support beneath the girder are investigated; and the spatial effect of the stress distribution is studied as well. To confirm the analysis accuracy, the results are calibrated with the field load test results. It is found that the influence of load distribution fashion is minor and negligible, while those of supporting width and additional support are not negligible; and the spatial effect is significant.

A static and dynamic load test is carried out on the constructed Hanjiang Super-major Railway Bridge in Laohekou to ensure the reliability of the bridge and test the carrying capacity and working condition of the bridge structure. The static load test is divided into three kinds of loading conditions, each of which tests the stress and deflection of the key sections of the bridge. The transverse vibration displacement of the piers and mid-span section is measured in the dynamic load test when the train is crossing the bridge at different speeds, and the vertical dynamic deflection of the mid-span section is also tested. The natural vibration frequency, the vibration types and the damping ratio of the whole bridge are measured in the pulsating experiment. Through the comparative analysis of the experimental results and the theoretical calculation results and standard, it can be concluded that the strength, the vertical and lateral stiffness of the bridge meet the requirements of both the design and specifications, and that the bridge is in a good working condition. The test and the analysis of the experimental results of the bridge can serve as a reference to the bridges of the same type.

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) technology has become increasingly popular in investigating displacement and deformation of natural and anthropogenic objects. Regardless of the accuracy of deformation identification, TLS provides remote comprehensive information about the measured object in a short time. These features of TLS were why TLS measurement was used for a static load test of an old, steel railway bridge. The results of the measurement using the Z+F Imager 5010 scanner and traditional surveying methods (for improved georeferencing) were compared to results of precise reflectorless tacheometry and precise levelling. The analyses involved various procedures for the determination of displacement from 3D data (black & white target analysis, point cloud analysis, and mesh surface analysis) and the need to pre-process the 3D data was considered (georeferencing, automated filtering). The results demonstrate that TLS measurement can identify vertical displacement in line with the results of traditional measurements down to ±1 mm.

A railway bridge has been the object of investigation in the context of structural health monitoring (SHM). The current work is focused on utilization of experimental data for refining a numerical model of the structure as well as on tests of dynamic excitations using a controlled hydraulic shaker and passing trains. The numerical model has been matched to experimental measurements using experimental modal analysis - classical and operational. The tailored SHM system for monitoring of the bridge consists of 15 piezoelectric strain sensors taking advantage of wireless communication for data transfer. Experimental responses of the bridge collected by the SHM system are confronted with the ones produced by the FE numerical model of the bridge. The long-term objective of the investigation is to elaborate a method for assessment of structural condition and prediction of remaining lifetime of the bridge.

Fiber optic sensors are gradually replacing electrical sensors in geotechnical applications owing to their immunity to electrical interference, durability, and cost-effectiveness. However, additional protective measures are required to prevent loss of functionality due to damage to the sensors, cables, or connection parts (splices and/or connectors) during installation and completion processes in borehole applications. We introduce two cases of installing fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors in 1 km boreholes to monitor the behavior of deep subsurface faults. We present our fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) forming schemes to protect sensors and splices. We also present uniaxial load test and post-completion monitoring results for assessing the effects and performance of the protective measures. The uniaxial load test and post-completion monitoring show that FBG sensors are well protected by FRP forming without significant impact on sensor performance itself and that they are successfully installed in deep boreholes. In addition to summarizing our learning from experiences, we also suggest several points for consideration to improve the applicability of FBG sensors in borehole environment of the geotechnical field.
