The article begins the cycle “Digital media as a new means of mediation”. “Digitalization” is interpreted as a challenge to contemporary psychology in general and cultural-historical theory in particular. The results of a theoretical and methodological analysis of the possibilities of regarding digital media as a new phenomenon, combining components of a sign and of a tool, are presented. Possible directions of research on various aspects of applying digital media in the framework of the cultural-historical concept are discussed. It is argued, that perceiving digital media as a new means of mediation opens a wide range of possibilities for investigating development of higher mental functions in digital society. One of the further steps of research consists in demonstrating, how traditional types of activity (e.g. reading, writing, play and communication) are transformed in digital contexts and what effects it can have on such functions as attention, memory, will and thinking.

Recent court decisions have revealed how the law is frequently under pressure to adjust to novel digital technologies. As legal practice is blind to the factual particularities of the relationship between law and technology, the courts’ efforts to re-stabilize normative expectations of Internet users, in the face of sociotechnical changes caused by computer networks, lack an adequate theoretical classification. Science and technology studies (STS) provide refined knowledge on the interaction between technology and society. Yet, the law and normative structures have remained a stepchild of that branch of interdisciplinary theorizing within the social sciences. Within the legal discipline, media-based theories about the law in the digital environment have conceived computer networks as hybrid sociotechnical constructs. This approach aptly shows how digital media have changed the way individuals experience the world and interact with one another and how the capacity to adjust cognitive behavioral expectations to new developments has become crucial. While the learning of individuals takes center stage, this perspective belittles the relevance of normative expectations and overlooks the law’s learning. How is the law capable of learning under conditions of computer networks and responding to the sociopolitical changes caused by the new technologies? This paper’s aim is to propose a perspective on the law in the digital society that combines STS with legal sociology. An approach based on technical affordances explains how normative behavioral expectations can adjust to changes in the networked environment and how the law learns in the digital society.

Adults who educate and care for young children are exposed to mixed-messages about what is in the best interests of young children in digital society. Such mixed-messaging makes adult decision-making about technology use in the best interests of young children hard to achieve. This project addresses this problem by working with leading organisations providing services related to quality digital media production, online-safety education, digital play and digital parenting. Using a Participatory Design approach, families, educators, industry partners and researchers will conduct mixed-methods investigations concerning: Relationships; Health and Well-being; Citizenship; and Play and Pedagogy to identify practices concerning technology use ‘with, by and for’ young children. Iterative design cycles will develop an Online Tool to support organisations providing services to young children and the adults responsible for their education and care. As society becomes more digital families and educators need new knowledge about what people do in digital society to inform their decision-making. This project will support organisations to use an empirically informed approach to service provision regarding using technologies in the best interests of young children.

In our digital society, the ability to communicate has irrevocably changed. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a glimpse into the impact of digital media on society, specifically digital communication. This glimpse is framed in terms of four characteristics of digital communication: product/ion, semiotic, public, and transitory. Issues are examined that relate to the democratization and monopolization of communication, who has access, the persistent Spiral of Silence, privacy, cyber bullying, identity theft, the ethereal being captured, as well as education and new literacies. Methodological gaps are noted in the research corpus and suggestions are proposed regarding the need for timeliness, support for a comprehensive span of research paradigms, and representation of a full range of populations. Finally, implications and recommendations are explored for civic engagement, commerce, education, and policy.

AbstractDigitalization and social media have profoundly changed the way in which we communicate and share knowledge. As a result, traditional formats of situational speech - including the specific case of academic speeches and lectures - have come under some scrutiny and pressure: Today’s digital society calls for innovative formats of situational academic communication that strategically incorporate considerations regarding social media and digitalization. Shedding light on this challenge, this paper takes a closer look at three new formats of academic speech: Slams, TEDTalks, and Science Notes. It shows that for all three formats, cross-media effects are of key importance - with attendees immediately addressed within the original situational setting becoming part of an overarching communicative event that is relayed to a wider audience via digital media. By examining the specific consequences which these and other effects entail with respect to questions of setting and performance as well as textual and content-related strategies, the paper illustrates the challenges and chances arising from new formats of situational communication in the field of knowledge communication. I argue that Slams, Ted Talks and Sciences Notes provide illuminating examples of how to combine the powerful immediacy and fascination of situational interaction with the innovative communicative possibilities of the digital era (by adapting the traditional medium of academic speech to the requirements of today’s digital society). In this sense, digitalization does not appear as heralding the end of situational speech, but rather as a genuine chance for its modernized revival.

The rapid development of information technologies in the formation of online or digital environments has a significant impact on the transformation of society contributing to the development of Smart society. This is largely due to the formation of a Smart environment based on the introduction of new technologies. In changing the patterns of social life, these new technologies require and stimulate the transformation of social norms and values. For example, simplified communication between people, expressed in the transfer of instant messages through mobile applications (messengers) gains popularity. Such messages replace verbal communication through mobile devices. The use of modern digital technologies contributes to developing new characteristics of activities, for example, multitasking, which is expressed in the ability to conduct several conversations and perform several actions in parallel. The aim of this study is to find the main trends and differences, and predict the behavior patterns of different age groups in the process of forming a Digital society. Changes can happen swiftly or slowly, in part determined by the speed of release of new information products. There is a latent transformation of generations’ existence in modern society from natural to imposed forced skills against the backdrop of these technological transformations. This research has identified the differences in the perception and attitude of different age groups to this transformation. Keywords: Smart society, Digital society, smart environment, digital media

Digital society nowadays faces various problems such as hoax or fake news, privacyviolation, cyberbullying, violence and pornography content, digital media addiction. The question is whether such problems are emerging because of there is no adequatedigital literacy in Indonesia? To answer this question, Jaringan Pegiat Literasi Digital(Japelidi, Network of Digital Literacy Activists) conducts a mapping research on digitalliteracy movement in Indonesia. This study involves 56 researchers from 26 universitiesin Indonesia. It maps out 342 digital literacy activities conducted in 9 cities in Indonesia. Some research findings are: universities are the main actor in literacy digital movement inIndonesia, public speaking forums are the most frequent digital literacy activities, maintarget group for digital literacy is the youth and schools are the best partners for digitalliteracy activities. Based on these findings, the study recommends some suggestions:to increase the digital literacy activities conducted by various actors in Indonesia, todevelop various methods of digital literacy programs, to widen the target groups, andto establish relationship with various partners not only schools, but also government, media and corporation. In addition, the study recommend that digital literacy should beimplemented in various levels: family, schools, and the state.
