We study the recurrence coefficients of the monic polynomials [Formula: see text] orthogonal with respect to the deformed (also called semi-classical) Freud weight [Formula: see text] with parameters [Formula: see text]. We show that the recurrence coefficients [Formula: see text] satisfy the first discrete Painlevé equation (denoted by d[Formula: see text]), a differential–difference equation and a second-order nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) in [Formula: see text]. Here [Formula: see text] is the order of the Hankel matrix generated by [Formula: see text]. We describe the asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficients in three situations: (i) [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] finite, (ii) [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] finite, (iii) [Formula: see text], such that the radio [Formula: see text] is bounded away from [Formula: see text] and closed to [Formula: see text]. We also investigate the existence and uniqueness for the positive solutions of the d[Formula: see text]. Furthermore, we derive, using the ladder operator approach, a second-order linear ODE satisfied by the polynomials [Formula: see text]. It is found as [Formula: see text], the linear ODE turns to be a biconfluent Heun equation. This paper concludes with the study of the Hankel determinant, [Formula: see text], associated with [Formula: see text] when [Formula: see text] tends to infinity.

We introduce a finite class of weighted quadrature rules with the weight function on as , where are the zeros of polynomials orthogonal with respect to the introduced weight function, are the corresponding coefficients, and is the error value. We show that the above formula is valid only for the finite values of . In other words, the condition must always be satisfied in order that one can apply the above quadrature rule. In this sense, some numerical and analytic examples are also given and compared.

AbstractWe study the expected number of real zeros for random linear combinations of orthogonal polynomials. It is well known that Kac polynomials, spanned by monomials with i.i.d. Gaussian coefficients, have only (2/π + o(1))logn expected real zeros in terms of the degree n. If the basis is given by the orthonormal polynomials associated with a compactly supported Borel measure on the real line, or associated with a Freud weight defined on the whole real line, then random linear combinations have $n/\sqrt{3} + o(n)$ expected real zeros. We prove that the same asymptotic relation holds for all random orthogonal polynomials on the real line associated with a large class of weights, and give local results on the expected number of real zeros. We also show that the counting measures of properly scaled zeros of these random polynomials converge weakly to either the Ullman distribution or the arcsine distribution.

Polynomials that are orthogonal with respect to a perturbation of the Freud weight function by some parameter, known to be modified Freudian orthogonal polynomials, are considered. In this contribution, we investigate certain properties of semi-classical modified Freud-type polynomials in which their corresponding semi-classical weight function is a more general deformation of the classical scaled sextic Freud weight |x|αexp(−cx6),c>0,α>−1. Certain characterizing properties of these polynomials such as moments, recurrence coefficients, holonomic equations that they satisfy, and certain non-linear differential-recurrence equations satisfied by the recurrence coefficients, using compatibility conditions for ladder operators for these orthogonal polynomials, are investigated. Differential-difference equations were also obtained via Shohat’s quasi-orthogonality approach and also second-order linear ODEs (with rational coefficients) satisfied by these polynomials. Modified Freudian polynomials can also be obtained via Chihara’s symmetrization process from the generalized Airy-type polynomials. The obtained linear differential equation plays an essential role in the electrostatic interpretation for the distribution of zeros of the corresponding Freudian polynomials.
