Brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys Stål) is an invasive agricultural pest that causes severe damage to many crops. To determine potential associations between H. halys feeding damage, Fusarium infection, and mycotoxin contamination in field corn, a field survey was conducted in eight counties in Virginia. Results indicated an association between H. halys feeding damage and fumonisin contamination. Subsequent field experiments in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia examined the ability of H. halys to increase Fusarium verticillioides (Sacc.) Nirenberg infection and fumonisin concentrations in corn. At the milk stage, H. halys (0 or 4 adults) and Fusarium (with or without F. verticillioides inoculum) treatments were applied to bagged ears in a two by two factorial randomized complete block design with 12 replicates. H. halys treatments increased levels of feeding damage (P < 0.0001) and Fusarium infection (P = 0.0380). Interaction between H. halys and Fusarium treatments influenced severity of infection (P = 0.0018) and fumonisin concentrations (P = 0.0360). Results suggest H. halys has the ability to increase both Fusarium infection and fumonisin concentrations in field corn. Further studies are needed to understand mechanisms by which H. halys increases fumonisin and to develop management strategies to mitigate impacts of H. halys on field corn in the region.

The use of Fusarium-infected barley for malting may lead to mycotoxin production and decreased product quality. Physical methods for the treatment of Fusarium-infected barley may prevent these safety and quality defects and allow the use of otherwise good quality barley. Hot water and electron beam irradiation were evaluated for their effectiveness in reducing Fusarium infection while maintaining germinative energy in barley samples. Hot-water treatments involved temperatures of 45, 50, 55, and 60°C and treatment times of 0, 1, 5, 10, and 15 min. Electron beam irradiation involved doses ranging from 0 to 11.4 kGy. Treatment with water at 45°C for 15 min resulted in a reduction in Fusarium infection from 32 to 1% after 15 min, with only a very slight reduction in germination. Treatment with water at 50°C for 1 min resulted in a reduction in Fusarium infection from 32 to 2%, and no effect on germination was observed for up to 5 min of treatment. At higher water temperatures, Fusarium infection was essentially eliminated, but germination was also severely reduced. Electron beam irradiation of Fusarium-infected barley reduced Fusarium infection at doses of &gt;4 kGy, and a slight increase in germination for dry samples was observed with doses of 6 to 8 kGy. Doses of &gt;10 kGy significantly decreased germination. Physical methods may have potential for the treatment of Fusarium-infected malting barley.

In connection with the constant growth of demand for high-quality food products, there is a need to develop effective methods for storing agricultural products, and the registration and predicting infection in the early stages. The studying of the physical properties of infected plants and seeds has fundamental importance for determining crop losses, conducting a survey of diseases, and assessing the effectiveness of their control (assessment of the resistance of crops and varieties, the effect of fungicides, etc.). Presently, photoluminescent methods for diagnosing seeds in the ultraviolet and visible ranges have not been studied. For research, seeds of winter wheat were selected, and were infected with one of the most common and dangerous diseases for plants—fusarium. The research of luminescence was carried out based on a hardware–software complex consisting of a multifunctional spectrofluorometer “Fluorat-02-Panorama”, a computer with software “Panorama Pro” installed, and an external camera for the samples under study. Spectra were obtained with a diagnostic range of winter wheat seeds of 220–400 nm. Based on the results obtained for winter wheat seeds, it is possible to further develop a method for determining the degree of fusarium infection.

Introduction. Infections caused by fungi of Fusarium species occur in immunocompromised individuals as disseminated diseases. Case Report. This case report presents a 5-year-old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who developed a disseminated fusarium infection during reinduction chemotherapy. Fever was the main symptom and it lasted for 15 weeks. Refractory fever despite broad-spectrum antibiotics, as well as nausea, myalgia, pulmonary symptoms with detection of pulmonary infiltrates, liver and spleen involvement indicated an invasive fungal infection. The patient received fluconazole, voriconazole, liposomal amphotericin B and caspofungin. Since high temperature was persistent, diagnostic laparoscopy of the abdomen was done. Scattered lesions, up to 2 mm in diameter, were observed macroscopically on the surface of the liver and spleen. The liver culture was positive for Acinetobacter and Fusarium species. After 38 days of therapy with liposomal amphotericin B and 3 days of ciprofloxacin, the patient became afebrile. Itraconazole (according to the antimycogram) was continued during maintenance therapy. Abdominal ultrasound was completely normal after 5 months of treatment with itraconazole. This boy was our first patient with a disseminated fusarium infection. At that time, Fusarium was detected in the hospital water system and in hospital air samples. Conclusion. A timely diagnosis of invasive fungal diseases in children is a big challenge. Over the past decade, there has been an increase in survival rate of patients with invasive fusariosis due to much more common use of voriconazole or combined antifungal therapy.
