Introducción: La neuropatía periférica diabética fue caracterizada en pacientes con Diabetes Mellitus Tipo 2, del Ambulatorio Urbano Tipo II Dr. Gualdrón de Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Método: Estudio descriptivo observacional, la muestra fue no probabilística, accidental, conformada por los primeros 60 pacientes que otorgaron su consentimiento informado, se aplicó The Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument. Resultados: Se detectó neuropatía periférica diabética en el 60% de los pacientes, de estos el 33,3% mostraba síntomas, 83,3% presentaban alteración en la apariencia de los pies, 11,1% ulceración en los pies, 55,6% reflejos aquilianos reforzados y 19,4% ausencia de los mismo. La percepción vibratoria del Hallux 13,9% estaba reducida y en 47,2% ausente. La sensibilidad al monofilamento en 38,9% estaba reducida y en 19,4% ausente. Asimismo el 78,3% correspondieron al sexo masculino, el 88,9% al grupo ≥ 70 años, el 63,6% señalan 10 o más años como diabéticos y el 63% no tenían adherencia al tratamiento farmacológico. Conclusiones: Se evidencia que la frecuencia de neuropatía periférica diabética es elevada, siendo mayor en hombres y en el grupo ≥ de 70 años, las principales lesiones identificadas fueron anormalidad en el aspecto de los pies y alteraciones de la sensibilidad. Ante  tal  problema  de  salud  es  necesario  establecer  acciones  preventivas  encaminadas  a  evitar el deterioro en la calidad de vida del paciente. Por ello es importante este tipo de valoración para evitar complicaciones.

Objetivos: Determinar la frecuencia de neuropatía periférica en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y la correlación entre la evaluación clínica con el estudio de la velocidad de conducción nerviosa (VCN). Material y métodos: Estudio descriptivo, transversal. Se evaluaron 62 pacientes con diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Se utilizó el Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI), el Michigan Diabetic Neuropatic Score (MDNS) y el estudio de VCN. Además se describieron las variables demográficas, antropométricas y de laboratorio. Resultados: La frecuencia de neuropatía periférica fue 96,8% según la VCN y 45% según el MNSI. La correlación entre el número de nervios afectados según VCN y el score MDNS fue moderada (Spearman r=0,59; p<0,001). Conclusiones: Existe una elevada frecuencia de neuropatía periférica en los pacientes diabéticos evaluados y no hubo buena correlación entre VCN y el score MDNS.

Objective. To translate the patient questionnaire section of the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) into Arabic, examine the reliability of the translated version, and provide descriptive data on a sample of patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods. Researchers used the translation-back translation method to obtain MNSI Arabic. The test was then applied on 76 patients with type 2 diabetes. A subgroup of 25 patients answered MNSI Arabic twice to examine reliability. Results. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.87, revealing good reliability of MNSI Arabic. The most common symptoms patients complained of were numbness (62%), prickling feelings (57%), burning pain (47%), and pain with walking (46%). Conclusion. Similar to the original MNSI version, our study demonstrates that the Arabic version of the MNSI questionnaire is a reliable tool for screening the symptomatic neuropathy status in patients with type 2 diabetes. Availability of this tool in Arabic will provide valuable and easy-to-obtain screening information regarding diabetic peripheral neuropathy that may help delay its complications by promoting early management.

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of micronized palmitoylethanolamide (PEA-m) treatment in reducing the painful symptoms experienced by diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy. PEA-m, a fatty acid amide of the N-acylethanolamine family, was administered (300 mg twice daily) to 30 diabetic patients suffering from painful diabetic neuropathy. Before treatment start, after 30 and 60 days the following parameters were assessed: painful symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy using the Michigan Neuropathy Screening instrument; intensity of symptoms characteristic of diabetic neuropathic pain by the Total Symptom Score; and intensity of different subcategories of neuropathic pain by the Neuropathic Pain Symptoms Inventory. Hematological and blood chemistry tests to evaluate metabolic control and safety were also performed. Statistical analysis (ANOVA) indicated a highly significant reduction in pain severity (P<0.0001) and related symptoms (P<0.0001) evaluated by Michigan Neuropathy Screening instrument, Total Symptom Score, and Neuropathic Pain Symptoms Inventory. Hematological and urine analyses did not reveal any alterations associated with PEA-m treatment, and no serious adverse events were reported. These results suggest that PEA-m could be considered as a promising and well-tolerated new treatment for symptomatology experienced by diabetic patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy.
