Abstract Composite materials have enormous applications in various fields. Thus, it is important to have an efficient damage detection method to avoid catastrophic failures. Due to the existence of multiple damage modes and the availability of data in different formats, it is important to employ efficient techniques to consider all the types of damage. Deep neural networks were seen to exhibit the ability to address similar complex problems. The research question in this work is ‘Can data fusion improve damage classification using the convolutional neural network?’ The specific aims developed were to 1) assess the performance of image encoding algorithms, 2) classify the damage using data from separate experimental coupons, and 3) classify the damage using mixed data from multiple experimental coupons. Two different experimental measurements were taken from NASA Ames Prognostic Repository for Carbon Fiber Reinforced polymer. To use data fusion, the piezoelectric signals were converted into images using Gramian Angular Field (GAF) and Markov Transition Field. Using data fusion techniques, the input dataset was created for a convolutional neural network with three hidden layers to determine the damage states. The accuracies of all the image encoding algorithms were compared. The analysis showed that data fusion provided better results as it contained more information on the damages modes that occur in composite materials. Additionally, GAF was shown to perform the best. Thus, the combination of data fusion and deep neural network techniques provides an efficient method for damage detection of composite materials.

One of the main challenges for structural damage detection using monitoring data is to acquire features that are sensitive to damages but insensitive to noise (e.g. sensor measurement noise) as well as environmental and operational effects (e.g. temperature effect). Inspired by the capabilities of deep learning methods in representation learning, various deep neural networks have been developed to obtain effective damage features from raw vibration data. However, most of the available deep neural networks are supervised, resulting in practical difficulties owing to the lack of damage labels. This article proposes a damage detection strategy based on an unsupervised deep neural network, referred to as deep convolutional denoising autoencoder, which accepts multi-dimensional cross-correlation functions as input. The strategy aims to extract damage features from field measurements of undamaged structures under the influence of noise and temperature uncertainties. In the proposed strategy, cross-correlation functions of vibration data are first calculated as basic features; then deep convolutional denoising autoencoder is developed to reconstruct cross-correlation functions from their noise-corrupted versions to extract desired features; exponentially weighted moving average control charts are finally established for these features to identify minor structural damages. The strategy is evaluated through a numerical simply supported beam model and an experimental continuous beam model. The mechanism of deep convolutional denoising autoencoder to extract damage features is interpreted by visualizing feature maps of convolutional layers in the encoder. It is found that these layers perform rough estimations of modal properties and preserve the damage information as the general trend of these properties in multiple extra frequency bands. The results show that the proposed strategy is competent for structural damage detection under the exposed environment and worth further exploring its capabilities in applications of real bridges.

Abstract Composite materials can be modified according to the requirements of applications and hence their applications are increasing significantly with time. Due to the complex nature of the aging of composites, it is equally challenging to establish structural health monitoring techniques. One of the most applied non-destructive techniques for this class of materials is using Lamb waves to quantify the damage. Another important advancement in damage detection is the application of deep neural networks. The data-driven methods have proven to be most efficient for damage detection in composites. For both of these advanced methods, the burning question always has been the requirement of data and quality of data. In this paper, these measurements were used to create a framework based on a deep neural network for efficient fault diagnostics. The research question developed for this paper was: can data fusion techniques used along with data augmentation improve the damage diagnostics using the convolutional neural network? The specific aims developed to answer this research question were (1) highlighting the importance of data fusion methods, (2) underlining the importance of data augmentation techniques, (3) generalization abilities of the proposed framework, and (4) sensitivity of the size of the dataset. The results obtained through the analysis concluded that the artificial intelligence techniques along with the Lamb wave measurements can efficiently improve the fault diagnostics of complex materials such as composites.
