The Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddelli) is one of the most vocal pinnipeds. The repertoires of subice vocalizations of Weddell seals recorded at Palmer Peninsula and at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, are different. Although seals at both sites give some of the same vocalizations, there are subtle spectral and temporal differences. In addition each population has unique vocalizations which are not heard at the other site. At Palmer Peninsula, there are several usage characteristics not exhibited at McMurdo Sound, such as mirror-image vocalization pairs and vocalization trios. Weddell seals in McMurdo Sound make extensive use of nine auxiliary sounds, while the Peninsula repertoire has none. Factors which appear to have been important in the development of these geographic differences appear to include strong fidelity to breeding sites, a polygynous mating system, and learning. Geographically different vocal repertoires have potential for identifying discrete breeding stocks of Antarctic seals.

Mating system parameters were estimated in two Italian natural populations of European beech (Fagussylvatica L.) using a mixed mating model and considering seven allozyme loci (Idh-A, Lap-A, Mdh-B, Pgd-A, Pgd-B, Pgd-C, Skd-A). High values of multilocus estimates of the outcrossing rate were found in both populations, ranging from 94 to 98%. Comparison of single- and multi-locus estimates of outcrossing rates seems to indicate the presence of consanguineous matings, probably because the populations are substructured. This hypothesis seems to be confirmed by the presence of a heterogeneity of the pollen allele frequencies across female parent trees and by the significant coefficient of the regression of pollen allele frequencies on ovule genotype. Variation in the fixation indices in different life-cycle phases was observed, indicating possible presence of selective processes between seed set and sexual maturity. Possible explanations of these results are presented.

The study of bone growth marks (BGMs) and other histological traits of bone tissue provides insights into the life history of present and past organisms. Important life history traits like longevity or age at maturity, which could be inferred from the analysis of these features, form the basis for estimations of demographic parameters that are essential in ecological and evolutionary studies of vertebrates. Here, we study the intraskeletal histological variability in an ontogenetic series of Asiatic wild ass (Equus hemionus) in order to assess the suitability of several skeletal elements to reconstruct the life history strategy of the species. Bone tissue types, vascular canal orientation and BGMs have been analyzed in 35 cross-sections of femur, tibia and metapodial bones of 9 individuals of different sexes, ages and habitats. Our results show that the number of BGMs recorded by the different limb bones varies within the same specimen. Our study supports that the femur is the most reliable bone for skeletochronology, as already suggested. Our findings also challenge traditional beliefs with regard to the meaning of deposition of the external fundamental system (EFS). In the Asiatic wild ass, this bone tissue is deposited some time after skeletal maturity and, in the case of the femora, coinciding with the reproductive maturity of the species. The results obtained from this research are not only relevant for future studies in fossilEquus, but could also contribute to improve the conservation strategies of threatened equid species.
