Additional larval, juvenile, and adult specimens and live photographs of the Caribbean Kuna Goby, Coryphopterus kuna, expand the known geographic range for the species and allow a comprehensive description of all the life stages for this recently-discovered species, including age and growth estimates from daily otolith increments. The Kuna Goby is found widely throughout the tropical western Atlantic, including southern Florida, Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Panama, San Andres Island, Bonaire, and Guadeloupe. The additional specimens indicate that C. kuna has a pelvic frenum and that females have a black flag on the outer portion of the first two spinous dorsal-fin membranes, while males have a dark stripe along the mid-length of the spinous dorsal fin. The development of melanophores on pelagic larvae through the transition to settled juvenile is described. The Kuna Goby is a notably small goby: larvae settle around 7–9 mm SL, adults mature at 10–11 mm SL and then only attain about 17 mm SL. Kuna Gobies settle after a 60-day pelagic larval life, and mature rapidly. They are reproductive in as few as three weeks and live for about two months after settlement. This is the first reported fish in which the pelagic larval duration is generally longer than the post-settlement lifespan.

A new goby, Coryphopterus kuna, is described from the Atlantic coasts of Panama and Mexico. The species is distinguished from other Coryphopterus spp. by the low median fin and pectoral fin ray counts and the morphology of the pelvic fin. The pelvic fins are fully joined with a rounded outline and have branched and longer innermost pelvic fin rays. There is no frenum connecting the two pelvic fin spines and the fin is heavily speckled with black spots in the male holotype. The late larval stage of C. kuna is identified by DNA sequence matching and is morphologically similar to other larval Coryphopterus spp. but has a distinct melanophore pattern. Examination of the otolith microstructure reveals a relatively long pelagic larval duration of 63 days with a narrowing of the later daily increments suggesting delayed metamorphosis. The species is the first vertebrate to include gene sequence barcoding under the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD) in the species description.

Diadromous fish species in the family Kuhliidae are able to colonise freshwater systems in Indo-Pacific islands, but their life cycle and the mechanisms involved in the colonisation of such ecosystems are poorly documented. After validating the daily rate of increment deposition in otoliths of Kuhlia rupestris, we estimated the pelagic larval duration (PLD) of K. rupestris, widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific area, and K. sauvagii, endemic to the Indian Ocean. Median PLD of K. rupestris was significantly longer than that of K. sauvagii (40.6 ± 6.9 and 32.3 ± 3.4 days (± s.d.), respectively), implying that the PLD is probably one factor controlling the extent of distribution range in Kuhlia. Within K. rupestris, individuals from New Caledonia had longer PLDs than those from Réunion Island (44.3 ± 6.7 and 37.3 ± 4.7 days (± s.d.) respectively). Further research on larval migration is needed to determine whether this was due to different environmental conditions or is population-specific. Interestingly, the PLD of these Kuhlia species is shorter than the PLD of other tropical diadromous fishes. These results improve our understanding of the dispersal strategies of freshwater fauna, to colonise and persist in tropical islands.

Abstract Lagrangian Flow Network (LFN) is a modelling framework in which ocean sub-areas are represented as nodes in a network interconnected by links representing transport of propagules (eggs and larvae) by currents. We asses the sensitivity and robustness of four LFN-derived connectivity metrics measuring retention and exchange. The most relevant parameters are tested over large ranges and a wide region with contrasting hydrodynamics: density of released particles, node size (spatial scale of discretization), Pelagic Larval Duration (PLD) and spawning modality. We find a minimum density of released particles that guarantees reliable values for most of the metrics examined. We also find that node size has a nontrivial influence on them. Connectivity estimates for long PLDs are more robust against biological uncertainties (PLD and spawning date) than for short PLDs. For mass-spawners releasing propagules over short periods (≈ 2-10 days), daily release must be simulated to properly consider connectivity fluctuations due to variable currents. In contrast, average connectivity estimates for species that spawn repeatedly over longer durations (few weeks to few months) remain robust even using longer periodicity (5-10 days). Our results have implications to design connectivity experiments with particle-tracking models and to evaluate the reliability of their results.

Abstract Species invasions threaten marine biodiversity globally. There is a concern that climate change is exacerbating this problem. Here, we examined some of the potential effects of warming water temperatures on the invasion of Western Atlantic habitats by a marine predator, the Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles). We focussed on two temperature-dependent aspects of lionfish life-history and behaviour: pelagic larval duration, because of its link to dispersal potential, and prey consumption rate, because it is an important determinant of the impacts of lionfish on native prey. Using models derived from fundamental metabolic theory, we predict that the length of time spent by lionfish in the plankton in early life should decrease with warming temperatures, with a concomitant reduction in potential dispersal distance. Although the uncertainty around change in dispersal distances is large, predicted reductions are, on average, more than an order of magnitude smaller than the current rate of range expansion of lionfish in the Caribbean. Nevertheless, because shorter pelagic larval duration has the potential to increase local retention of larvae, local lionfish management will become increasingly important under projected climate change. Increasing temperature is also expected to worsen the current imbalance between rates of prey consumption by lionfish and biomass production by their prey, leading to a heightened decline in native reef fish biomass. However, the magnitude of climate-induced decline is predicted to be minor compared to the effect of current rates of lionfish population increases (and hence overall prey consumption rates) on invaded reefs. Placing the predicted effects of climate change in the current context thus reveals that, at least for the lionfish invasion, the threat is clear and present, rather than future.

For many fish species, growth and mortality of larvae are closely coupled, with faster-growing larvae generally experiencing higher survivorship in the plankton, which may lead to higher recruitment. Using back-calculated growth trajectories derived from otolith increments we used the modified Fry model to estimate the growth rate of larvae and early juveniles of the commercially important sparid, Chrysophrys auratus, at four sites around northern New Zealand. Back-calculated growth rates were used to test the hypothesis that fish with a short pelagic larval duration (≤20 days) grew faster than did fish with a long pelagic larval duration (>24 days) during both the larval and juvenile periods. At three of the four sites, fish with a short larval duration grew significantly faster during the larval period, and these larvae generally continued to have a larger size-at-age as juveniles up to 70-day-old. Growth rates for both the larval and early juvenile period were also found to vary significantly among the four sites and were found to be unrelated to differences in water temperature. Localised variation in early growth of C. auratus among sites may be important in helping explain differences in their contribution to the recruitment to C. auratus populations.

Rhinogobius formosanus Oshima, 1919 has long been considered an amphidromous goby. However, a landlocked population recently found in the Jingualiao Creek upstream of the Feitsui Reservoir in Taipei suggests that R. formosanus may complete its life in the river. This study aims to verify the habitat use of the landlocked population of R. formosanus collected from the Feitsui Reservoir and an amphidromous population collected in Malian Creek using otolith Sr:Ca ratio analysis. The hypothesis that early life history varies between the landlocked and migratory gobies was also tested. Genetic analyses show that the Feitsui Reservoir and Malian Creek populations are not genetically different. Rhinogobius formosanus from Malian Creek showed high-to-low otolith Sr:Ca ratios suggesting that these specimens spent a planktonic larval stage in the sea followed by a freshwater life at later stages. In contrast, R. formosanus from the Feitsui Reservoir showed constant lower otolith Sr:Ca ratios, implying a landlocked life history of fish in the creek upstream of the reservoir. In addition, the analysis of growth increments showed a longer pelagic larval duration for the fish in the Malian Creek (58.8 days) than those in the Feitsui Reservoir (38.8). Variation of pelagic larval duration in two genetically homogenous populations implies acclimatization to the reservoir by the landlocked gobies. This study shows that R. formosanus, like some other congeners, is capable of adapting to a freshwater landlocked environment in its early developmental stage and supports the hypothesis that landlocked populations may have a shorter pelagic larval duration.
