Abstract Aim Aquaculture plays an important role in the world and in Brazil. Artificial construction of water bodies, such as ponds and reservoirs, has allowed for fish culture in cages in those environments, generating conflicts over the use of these public waters. The producers are seeking to increase production, and the ecosystem is susceptible to the impacts caused by production activity. The aim of this review was to identify questions about these conflicts (productivity × environment) and to indicate possible solutions to the main problems related to fish farming in reservoirs. Methods A bibliographical survey was carried out on the main aspects of cage fish farming in Brazilian reservoirs. Studies from 1977 to 2018 (scientific journals, books, and thesis) were revised using seven databases, the CAPES periodicals portal and Google Scholar websites. The main keywords used were “aquaculture”, “reservoir”, “cage”, “eutrophication”, “carrying capacity”, “impacts”, “oligotrophic”, “escapes”, “hybrids”, and “pollution”. Results We accessed approximately 330 and cited 151 documents. Conclusions The negative aspects associated with cage fish farming, as escapes of cultivated fish, and the possible solutions of this and others negative impacts were addressed, identifying mechanisms for reducing conflicts between environmental impacts and aquaculture production. Potential solutions include the use of native fish species or sterile species, implementation of monitoring systems of the surrounding area, adoption of measures to reduce the accidental escape of fish, use of multitrophic culture systems, use of highly digestible diets with appropriate food management, and use of computer programs that incorporate current and historical environmental data to calculate carrying capacity and choose the most appropriate location for production.

Waduk Cirata di Kabupaten Cianjur merupakan salah satu perairan umum dengan intensitas budidaya ikan yang tinggi di Provinsi Jawa Barat. Kegiatan budidaya di Waduk Cirata menggunakan teknologi budidaya ikan pada karamba jaring apung (KJA) yang saat ini sudah berkembang pesat di beberapa danau dan waduk seperti Saguling dan Jatiluhur. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa kegiatan usaha budidaya ikan dengan teknologi KJA di Desa Cikidang Bayabang dengan mengkaji perkembangan usaha, pendapatan dan konsumsi rumah tangga pembudidaya ikan. Desa Cikidang Bayabang merupakan salah satu desa terpilih mewakili tipologi perikanan budidaya pada KJA dari kegiatan riset PANELKANAS. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode survei dan wawancara untuk pengumpulan data serta metode statistik deskriptif untuk analisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dilihat dari usaha, pendapatan dan konsumsinya budidaya ikan di KJA di Desa Cikidang Bayabang masih menjanjikan tetapi masih diperlukan dukungan pemerintah untuk lebih memajukan kegiatan budidaya perikanan. Tittle:  Profile of Business, Income and Consumption of Fish Culture Households Iin Cikidang Bayabang Village, Cianjur District, West Java Province.Cirata reservoir in Cianjur District is one of open water used for intensive fish culture in West Java province. Fish culture in Cirata reservoir uses a floating net cage (locally known as KJA) technology which now growing expansively in some lakes and reservoirs in West Java such as Saguling and Jatiluhur. This research aims to analyze fish culture activities with cage culture technology in Cikidang Bayabang Village by examining business development, income and consumption of fish farmers. This village is considered a selected site of the PANELKANAS research representing typology of fish cage aquaculture. This research uses a survey method and interviews to collect data in May 2010 and descriptive statistical methods for data analysis. This research confirms that fish culture business, income and consumption in the cage fish farming in Cikidang Bayabang is still promising activities but it need supports from government to improve it.

The Lochbuie Marine Institute on the Isle of Mull (Inner Hebrides), established in 1886, had links with the short-lived National Fish Culture Association of Great Britain and Ireland (inaugurated 1882). Its amalgamation with the Scottish Marine Station at Granton (Edinburgh) was informally suggested in 1887, but it ceased to exist about this time.
