Zusammenfassung Gegenstand und Ziel: Die Aufnahme von Abfällen oder Kadavern durch Hunde als Aasfresser ist nicht ungewöhnlich. Bisher wurden in diesem Zusammenhang vor allem akute gastrointestinale Symptome beschrieben. In der neueren Literatur finden sich jedoch auch Berichte über zum Teil schwere neurologische Störungen. Die Zielsetzung der vorliegenden Untersuchung war die Beschreibung von Rassen-, Altersund Geschlechtsverteilung sowie Symptomen und Prognose bei durch die Aufnahme von Unrat hervorgerufenen Intoxikationen. Untersuchungsgut, Material und Methode: Daten von im Zeitraum Dezember 2003 bis Juli 2007 stationär aufgenommenen Patienten wurden retrospektiv auf Hinweise für eine durch Aufnahme von Unrat ausgelöste Intoxikation untersucht. Ergebnisse: Insgesamt konnten 26 Hunde mit einer “Müllintoxikation” identifiziert werden. Achtzehn Hunde waren weiblich und nur acht männlich. Das mittlere Alter lag bei 4,4 Jahren (6 Monate bis 14 Jahre). Die am häufigsten vertretenen Rassen waren Labrador Retriever (n = 5), Golden Retriever und Jack Russell Terrier (je n = 3). 17 Hunde (65%) zeigten zentralnervöse Veränderungen. Bei 10 dieser Hunde war die Aufnahme von Unrat anamnestisch gesichert. Schlussfolgerungen: Neurologische Störungen konnten bei über der Hälfte der untersuchten Hunde festgestellt werden. In zukünftigen Untersuchungen sollte deshalb zur Identifizierung möglicher auslösender Substanzen besonderer Wert auf eine umfangreiche toxikologische Abklärung solcher Fälle gelegt werden. Klinische Relevanz: Bei plötzlichem Auftreten von zentralnervösen Symptomen sollte auch an Intoxikationen durch die Aufnahme von Unrat gedacht werden. Die Therapie erfolgt soweit möglich durch Dekontamination sowie symptomatisch. Die Prognose ist in der Regel gut.

The scale of cardiac diseases, and in particular heart failure and acute myocardial infarction, emphasises the need for radically new approaches, such as cell therapy, to address the underlying cause of the disease, the loss of functional myocardium. Stem cell-based therapies, whether through transplanted cells or directing innate repair, may provide regenerative approaches to cardiac diseases by halting, or even reversing, the events responsible for progression of organ failure. Cardio3 BioSciences, a leading Belgian biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of regenerative and protective therapies for the treatment of cardiac disease, was founded in this context in 2004. The company is developing a highly innovative cell therapy approach based on a platform designed to reprogramme the patient’s own stem cells into cardiac progenitor cells. The underlying rationale behind this approach is that, in order to reconstruct cardiac tissue, stem cells need to be specific to cardiac tissue. The key is therefore to provide cardiac-specific progenitor cells to the failing heart to induce cardiac repair.

Cardiac disease is the leading cause of death, and sudden cardiac death occupies the first place in sudden deaths of natural causes. Sudden cardiac death due to lethal arrhythmia may be the first manifestation of a cardiac disease, such cases becoming suspect dead, thus forensic cases. The autopsy performed in such cases may reveal important cardiovascular disease but not obvious macroscopic or histological changes of acute myocardial infarction (IMA), except for cases of survival for several hours after the onset of the symptomatology. Biochemical markers were used to test for myocardial lesions in the absence of morphological changes. Methods for determining myoglobin, CK-MB, troponin T (cTn T), troponin I (cTn I) were introduced to the clinic to diagnose the condition of patients with chest pain as early as the 1990s. The lack of pathognomonic elements in corps investigations, where part of the analysis cannot be carried out, requires verification of the value of the investigations that can be carried out, with reference to the biochemical in the present case, in establishing the diagnosis with certainty.
