AbstractThe phylum Annelida exhibits high morphological diversity coupled with its extensive ecological diversity, and the process of its evolution has been an attractive research subject for many researchers. Its representatives are also extensively studied in fields of ecology and developmental biology and important in many other biology related disciplines. The study of biomineralisation is one of them. Some annelid groups are well known to form calcified tubes but other forms of biomineralisation are also known. Herein, we report a new interstitial annelid species with black spicules, Thoracophelia minuta sp. nov., from Yoichi, Hokkaido, Japan. Spicules are minute calcium carbonate inclusions found across the body and in this new species, numerous black rod-like inclusions of calcium-rich composition are distributed in the coelomic cavity. The new species can be distinguished from other known species of the genus by these conspicuous spicules, shape of branchiae and body formula. Further, the new species’ body size is apparently smaller than its congeners. Based on our molecular phylogenetic analysis using 18S and 28S sequences, we discuss the evolutionary significance of the new species’ spicules and also the species' progenetic origin.

Ο σκοπός της παρούσας εργασίας είναι η διερεύνηση της οικολογίας των κερκοπιθήκων του Πλειοκαίνου και Πλειστοκαίνου του Ευρωπαϊκού χώρου, αναλύοντας την διατροφική τους οικολογία, η οποία θα συμβάλει στη γνώηση της εξέλιξης των Cercopithecidae στην περιοχή της Ευρώπης κατά την χρονική περίοδο μελέτης. Αυτό επιτεύχθηκε με τη συνδυαστική χρήση δύο μεθοδολογιών: οδοντική τοπογραφία - ανάλυση πάχους αδαμαντίνης και ανάλυση υφής μικροτριβής (DMTA). Η μελέτη επικεντρώνεταί σε απολιθωμένο οδοντικό υλικό που βρίσκεται σε διάφορες συλλογές μουσείων και πανεπιστημιών της Ευρώπης, από το Mesopithecus monspessulanus που ανήκει στο απολιθωμένο γένος Mesopithecus, και απολιθωμένους αντιπροσώπους των γενών Dolichopithecus, Paradolichopithecus και Macaca. Τα αποτελέσματα της εν λόγω εργασίας αναμένεται να αυξήσουν την πληθώρα πληροφοριών όσων αφορά το οικολογικό υπόβαθρο των απολιθωμένων αντιπρόσωπων της οικογένειας Cercopithecidae του Ευρωπαϊκού χώρου. Επιπλέον, συμβάλλουν περαιτέρω στην καλύτερη κατανόηση του τρόπου με τον οποίο οικολογικές διαδικασίες, όπως ο ανταγωνισμός για χώρο και διατροφικούς πόρους, έχουν επηρεάσει την εξέλιξη αυτής της οικογένειας πρωτευόντων στην εν λόγω γεωγραφική περιοχή την χρονική περίοδο μελέτης. Όλα τα παραπάνω αναμένεται να τροφοδοτήσουν περισσότερους ερευνητές στο μέλλον να διερευνήσουν πιθανές επιπτώσεις αυτών των οικολογικών αλληλεπιδράσεων σε κοινωνίες πρωτευόντων σήμερα αλλά και στο παρελθόν.

AbstractThe sequence of three phases (Anathermal, Altithermal, Medithermal) of the Postglacial or Neothermal temperature curve, although demonstrably a reality, has been used improperly to determine absolute dates and past climatic conditions from archaeological deposits. A review of the historic development of the concept of the three sequent Neothermal temperature phases reveals the assumptions on which absolute dating of these phases has been based. Analysis of the variable radio-carbon dates now available for deposits attributed to these phases in a number of different localities in North America indicates that these phases cannot be considered as universal time periods bracketed by definite absolute dates; and consideration of the ecological diversity within North America at any particular time, especially in the West, indicates that climatic conditions inferred for a given span of Neothermal time in one area cannot be projected into another area without direct independent evidence of the actual climatic conditions which existed in the second area at that time. It is suggested that Anathermal, Altithermal, and Medithermal be used not as time periods with fixed absolute dates or climatic periods with defined characteristics, but rather be considered as phases of the Neothermal temperature curve which in different ecological areas resulted in locally varying climatic conditions which must be determined by direct evidence, dated by independent means, and designated by local terms.
