In this exploratory qualitative study, researchers examined key educational experiences bachelor- level social workers identified as being most helpful in transitioning to current social work careers. Twenty students from CSWE- accredited social work programs, having worked in a social work agency for a minimum of 4 months, voluntarily participated. The researchers conducted one- on- one interviews in which social workers were asked to describe educational experiences and beliefs that supported their transition to careers in social work. The data from these interviews were coded to identify themes to aid educators in examining variables significant in the education of future social workers. These themes include learning occurring in social work courses, self- awareness, learning in the field, and learning from others.

Objective: Nurses’ organizational commitment is one of the most important factors that facilitates their professional evolution and influences the method of care provision, quality of care, and patients’ satisfaction. The aim of this study was identified the factors that affect nurses’ perceived organizational commitment. Material and Methods: This qualitative study, conducted on 16 clinical nurses employed in Social Security Hospital of Khorramabad, Iran, during five months from May to September 2015, used deep semi-structured interviews. Purposive sampling method was used for the selection of nurses and the data were analyzed using conventional qualitative content analysis. Lincoln & Guba’s criteria were used to secure data accuracy and stability. Results: Sixteen subcategories, five categories, and three themes were distilled during content analysis process. The abstracted themes included “organizational factors”, “occupational challenges”, and “contributory management”. Conclusion: Our findings showed that numerous factors present in nurses’ profession and work environment may influence the rate of nurses’ interest and commitment in the hospital and the related organization. Hence, nurse managers can foster the promotion of nurses’ organizational commitment through creating the required suitable conditions. Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.18(2) 2019 p.303-311

Abstract Background and Objectives With worldwide aging it is imperative to understand nurses’ perceptions of tiredness of life (ToL) and their ways of dealing with an increasingly common phenomenon. Most research on ToL relates to older individuals’ experiences. This study aimed to gain insight into nurses’ (a) perceptions of, (b) attitude(s) toward, and (c) ways of dealing with ToL in older patients. Research Design and Methods Qualitative study with elements of constructivist grounded theory. Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews between February 2016 and June 2017 with a purposive sample of 25 nurses working in home care and nursing homes. Results A careful consideration indicative of an oscillation between 3 levels (e.g., behavioral, cognitive, and affective) is present. The confrontation with persons having ToL instigates a cognitive process of searching to understand the state a person is in, which on its turn ensues in an emotional balancing between courage and powerlessness and a behavioral approach of action or dialogue. Discussion and Implications Our findings indicate that nurses aim to provide good care, sensitive to the older person’s needs, but this process is not without ambiguity. This study provides nurse managers with valuable guidance to (a) support nursing staff in dealing with ToL, and (b) advance opportunities for emotionally sensitive care and (individual- and team-based) reflection. Finally, this study offers suggestions for education programs to incorporate ToL in curricula.

<p><strong>BACKGROUND: </strong>Nursing staff encounter a lot of physical, psychological and social stressors at work. Because the adverse effects of job stress on the health of this group of staff and subsequently on the quality of care services provided by nurses; study and identify how nurses cope with the job stress is very important and can help prevent the occurrence of unfavorable outcomes.</p> <p><strong>OBJECTIVES: </strong>The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of nurses to identify the strategies they used to cope with the job stress.</p> <p><strong>METHODS: </strong>In this qualitative study content analysis approach was used. Purposive sampling approach was applied. The sample population included 18 nurses working in three hospitals. Data collection was conducted through face to face unstructured interview and was analyzed using conventional content analysis approach.<strong></strong></p> <p><strong>FINDINGS: </strong>The analysis of the data emerged six main themes about the strategies used by nurses to cope with job stress, which, include: situational control of conditions, seeking help, preventive monitoring of situation, self-controlling, avoidance and escape and spiritual coping.<strong></strong></p> <p><strong>CONCLUSIONS: </strong>exploring experiences of nurses on how to cope with job stress emerged context-dependent and original strategies and this knowledge can pave the ground for nurses to increase self-awareness of how to cope with job stress. And could also be the basis for planning and the adoption of necessary measures by the authorities to adapt nurses with their profession better and improves their health which are essential elements to fulfill high-quality nursing care.</p>

Retaining and recruiting nurses in nursing homes, - a qualitative study of nurse managers' experiences The purpose of the study was to explore nurse managers in Norwegian nursing homes experiences with retaining and recruiting of nurses. The study has a qualitative exploratory design. Ten nurse managers in nursing homes were interviewed. Two main themes emerged from the analysis: “Retaining nurses - a difficult line to balance” and “Recruiting – a field of excellence with ideals and reality”. Retaining and recruiting nurses challenged nurse managers in finding a balance between facilitating professional development, supporting the nurses in independent prioritization of tasks as well as economic and organizational work that were occasionally perceived as an obstacle. Nurse managers play an important role in the nursing homes and influence nurses’ retaining rate through active leadership. Good leadership may lead to a good reputation, which in turn is vital in retaining and recruiting nurses.

Abstract Background The baby and mother friendly initiative is a breastfeeding programme in Namibia aimed to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. The purpose of this study was to describe nurse managers’ perceptions and experiences of implementing the baby and mother friendly initiative in order to identify its successes and failures, as well as to develop guidelines for the strengthening of the programme. Methods An evaluation research design to collect qualitative data through face-to-face interviews was conducted. A total of 33 interviews with nurse managers in charge of the baby and mother friendly hospitals, were conducted. Results This study gave insight into the strength and weaknesses in the implementation of the programme implementation and make recommendations for improvement thereof. Four themes emerged from the study, namely: the extent of programme implementation, perceived benefits of the programme, challenges/hindrance to the implementation of the programme and recommendations for strengthening of the programme. The information was used to develop and validate guidelines that would help to strengthen the implementation of the programme. Conclusions The study makes a contribution to the body of knowledge in nursing in that it provides guidelines for the strengthening of the baby and mother programme.
