Background: Urinary tract infection is caused by the presence and replication of microorganisms in the urinary tract. Urinary tract infection is a major health problem among females especially among pregnant women and this is caused by the physiological makeup of the female urinary tract. Objective: This study was designed to assess the epidemiology of UTIs present amidst pregnant women and females residing in the Omu-Aran community. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 individuals were involved of which 50 were pregnant women while the remaining 50 were non-pregnant females. Semi-structured questionnaires were distributed to all participants to obtain their data. Samples of urine (early morning midstream) were collected in universal bottles from participants. The urine specimens were cultured on four different agar plates which were; cystein lactose electrolyte deficient agar, blood agar, MacConkey agar and nutrient agar for significant bacteria growth. Microscopic and macroscopic examination was also carried out on the samples for possible detection of infections. Results: The result of the culture showed a significant bacterial growth of 77% and 23% of the samples collected showed no significant bacterial growth. Bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus spp., Proteus species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans were isolated. With Staphylococcus aureus predominantly present and observed as the causative factor for (45.4%) occurrence of UTIs, closely followed by Staphylococcus saprophyticus (13.0%), Escherichia coli (13.0%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (9.1%) Proteus species (9.1%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (7.8%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (1.3%). However the only fungi isolated was Candida albicans showing (1.3%) prevalence, Candida is the most common cause of fungal infections in humans. Conclusion: Results obtained in this work showed a high prevalence of Urinary tract infection at our study location. A prompt enlightenment campaign and need for periodic check among females is highly advocated to reduce or out rightly eliminate the spread of common uropathogens in circulation.

INTRODUCTION Urinary tract of female undergoes tremendous changes during pregnancy which increases their risk of acquiring infection. Asymptomatic bacteriuria is a common entity among pregnant women which refers to significant bacteriuria (>105 bacteria per ml of urine) without any typical symptoms of urinary tract infection. Asymptomatic bacteriuria can lead to various maternal and fetal complications if not detected and treated on time. MATERIAL AND METHODS Total 280 urine samples were collected in sterile universal containers from pregnant women not showing typical symptoms of urinary tract infection at the time of sample collection. Urine samples were inoculated in both MacConkey agar and Blood agar by semi quantitative culture method. Culture plates were reported after 24 hours of incubation at 370C. Bacteria isolated were subjected to antibacterial susceptibility testing by modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. RESULTS Out of 280 urine cultures, 213 samples were sterile. Significant bacteriuria was seen in 25 cases (8.9%) followed by insignificant bacteriuria (20, 7.14%) and contamination (17, 6.10%). Highest number of cultures positive were in age group 21-30 years (19, 9.1%,). Out of 25 cases of significant bacteriuria, 60% were primigravida and 40% were multigravida. The most common organism isolated was Escherichia coli (10, 60%) followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (5, 40%). CONCLUSION Screening of all pregnant women for asymptomatic bacteriuria is essential during their antenatal checkup. Escherichia coli is the commonest organism that cause asymptomatic bacteriuria. Appropriate antibiotic therapy is absolutely necessary for positive cases on the basis of antimicrobial susceptibility result to prevent unwanted obstetric complications.

Background: Urinary tract infection is a common pathology during pregnancy due to hormonal and morphological changes. Objective of this study was to improve management of urinary tract infection during prenatal care.Methods: A total of 987 pregnant women who have been in prenatal care have freely accepted to participate in cross-sectional study carried out from 1st May 2016 to 30th April 2017 at Yopougon University Hospital (Abidjan Côte d’Ivoire) were included. Patients were submitted to questionnaire by one of investigators for epidemiological component and then physical examination was carried out by her attending physician for clinical component. Then at laboratory urine was taken for culture after dipstick test.Results: Of the 987 patients included 9.4% had a urinary tract infection of which 81.7% were asymptomatic. Significant risk factors retained were existence of a history of urinary tract infection (OR=0.46; p=0,038) and gestational age of pregnancy (OR=0.44; p=0.05). Urine culture isolated germs were mainly Escherichia Coli (51.6%) and Klebsiella pneumoniaie (23.6%). These germs were all susceptible to cephalosporins. They had resistances of more than 50% to penicillins.Conclusions: Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae are most common germs of urinary tract infections in pregnant women. Escherichia coli is not susceptible to penicillins with a resistance of 70% for penicillins except for clavulanic acid amoxicillin. It appears as first choice antibiotic for our prescriptions in case of probabilistic antibiotic therapy.

Background. Urinary tract infection is one of the most common bacterial infections encountered in pregnant women with significant morbidity. This study aimed to determine the bacterial profile and its antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of urinary tract infection among pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at a Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (HUCSH), Southern Ethiopia. Method. A cross-sectional study was conducted in which consecutive pregnant women enrolled in the study from March to June 2019. The structured questionnaire used to collect sociodemographic and clinical data in a face-to-face interview. Midstream urine was collected from pregnant women using sterile containers. Culture and sensitivity were performed using a standard operating procedure of the microbiology laboratory. Data entry and analysis were conducted using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 20. Descriptive and logistic regression was used to conduct the output of the data. The odds ratio at 95% confidence interval was considered as a statistically significant association with a p value <0.05. Result. The overall magnitude of urinary tract infection in this study was 7.8% (4.7–10.8%). Escherichia coli was found to be the most frequently isolated (47.8%), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (17.4%), Staphylococcus aureus (8.7%), Klebsiella ozaenae, Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis, Citrobacter spp., Salmonella group A, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, and Enterobacter cloacae each (4.3%). Gram-negative bacteria were sensitive to 78.3%, 91.3%, and 100% of ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, and nitrofurantoin, respectively. Gram-positive bacteria were sensitive to clindamycin (100%), gentamicin (100%), and nitrofurantoin (100%) and fully resistant to ceftriaxone (100%) and cefuroxime (100%). There is no statistically significant association (p < 0.05) between the risk factor of urinary tract infection and UTI. Conclusion. The overall prevalence of urinary tract infection among pregnant women attending antenatal care was 7.8%. Escherichia coli were the dominant isolate followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae. Gram-negative isolates are highly sensitive to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, nitrofurantoin, and ceftriaxone and Gram-positive isolates to gentamicin, clindamycin, and nitrofurantoin. Most of the bacteria are resistant to cotrimoxazole and cefuroxime. There is no statistically significantly associated variable. Screening for the presence of urinary tract infection during pregnancy will improve the quality of antenatal care further reducing complication. The above antibiotics can be prescribed based on the side effect to pregnant women in case empirical treatment is mandatory in the study area.

Бессимптомная бактериурия определяется как присутствие бактерий в моче беременных без признаков или симптомов инфекции мочевыводящих путей (ИМП). Стандартное микробиологическое исследование образцов мочи проведено с июня 2019 года по декабрь 2020 года у 800 беременных по программам скрининга на наличие мочеполовой инфекции (ИМП) в поликлинике городской клинической больницы №7 г.Алматы. Образцы были протестированы микробиологически по стандартным методикам, рекомендованных CAESAR. Выбор антимикробных препаратов (АМП) для включения в исследование чувствительности, а также принципы интерпретации результатов проводились согласно рекомендации Европейского комитета по определению чувствительности к антибиотикам (EUCAST). Представлены результаты оценки резистенности и чувствительности к антимикробным препаратам 138 клинических изолятов Escherichia coli, выделенных из образцов мочи беременных пациенток поликлиники №35 ГКБ №7 УОЗ г.Алматы. Основными уропатогеном в 66,3% являются E. Coli, меньше - в 15,9% Staphylococcus aureus и в 8,2% Klebsiella pneumoniae. Чувствительность изолятов Escherihia coli была для левофлоксацина (76,6%), комбинации пиперациллин/тазобактаму (73,7%), ципрофлоксацину (71,5%), тетрациклину (74,4%), но низкой для пиперациллина (24.8%), цефураксима (38,6%), тобрамицина (40,9%), цефазилина (40,1%), цефепима (40,1%); цефтазидима (43%), комбинации триметоприм/сульфаметаксазол (43,8%). Чувствительность E. coli к карбапенемам - для имипенема (73%), меропенема (67,8%), эртапенема (76,6%), а устойчивость составляла для эртапенема (13,8%), меропенема (16%) и имипенема (3,6%). Asymptomatic bacteriuria is defined as the presence of bacteria in the urine of pregnant women without signs or symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI). A standard microbiological study of urine samples was carried out from June 2019 to December 2020 in 800 pregnant women under screening programs for the presence of urinary tract infection (UTI) in the ambulatory of the Almaty city clinical hospital № 7. The samples were tested microbiologically according to standard methods recommended by CAESAR. The choice of AMPs for inclusion in the susceptibility study, as well as the principles of interpretation of the results, were carried out according to the recommendation of the European Committee for the determination of antibiotic susceptibility (EUCAST). The sensitivity of Escherihia coli isolates was for levofloxacin (76.6%), piperacillin / tazobactam combination (73.7%), ciprofloxacin (71.5%), tetracycline (74.4%), but low for piperacillin (24.8%), cefuraxime (38.6%), tobramycin (40.9%), cefazilin (40.1%), cefepime (40.1%); ceftazidime (43%), trimethoprim / sulfametaxazole combination (43.8%). The sensitivity of Escherihia coli to carbapenems was for imipenem (73%), meropenem (67.8%), ertapenem (76.6%), and resistance was for ertapenem (13.8%), meropenem (16%) and imipenem (3,6%).

Urinary tract infection [UTI] is a common problem in pregnant woman. This study examined the frequency of UTI in 137 pregnant women attending Al Mukalla maternity hospital from January to June 2002. Urine samples were examined for UTI microscopically and by culture, and sensitivity tests were done for the organisms isolated using a range of antibiotics. Information on age, trimester, parity and number of pregnancies were also collected for each woman. This study showed that 30% of the women suffered from UTI; Escherichia coli was the most frequently isolated organism [41.5%], and it was highly susceptible to chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, ceftizoxime and amikacin. Of the variables examined, 53.7% of the infected women were in the age group 15-24 years, 48.8% were in their 3rd trimester and 75.6% had 1-3 children
