Phytochemical investigations of the methanolic extract of the fruits of Peucedanum grande C. B. Clarke (Apiaceae) led to the identification of three coumarins and a naphthyl labdanoate diarabinoside characterized as 5-hydroxy-6-isopranyl coumarin (1), 5,6-furanocoumarin (2), 7-methoxy-5,6-furanocoumarin (3), and labdanyl-3α-ol-18-(3’’’-methoxy-2’’’- naphthyl-oate)-3α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(2’→1’’)-α-L-arabinofuranoside (4). The structures of these compounds were identified on the basis of spectral data analysis and chemical reactions. The methanolic extract and 4 showed nephroprotective activity against gentamicininduced nephrotoxicity in Wistar rats.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the nephroprotective effect of the Myrmecodia pendans extract on Wistar rats. The nephrotoxicity of the animals was induced through intra-peritoneal administration of 100mg/kg/day of gentamicin for ten days. The effect of M. pendans extract at a dose of 250mg/kg/day was concurrently monitored in some rats by assessing their serum creatinine levels, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and the histopathological parameters. The mean of serum creatinine in control group was 1.17±0.18mg/dl and in nephrotoxic group it was 2.22±0.29 mg/dl, while in group given the extract were 1.38±0.19 and 1.27±0.15mg/dl, respectively. In that group also sequentially showed BUN levels of 24.27±2.6, 108.13±11.58, 30.70±4.23 and 27.28±2.84mg/dl, respectively. Nephrotoxicity was induced in the animals injected with gentamicin, which showed a significant (P<0.05) increase in creatinine and BUN compared with control group. The results also showed that the M. pendans ethanolic extracts significantly (P<0.05) prevented the increase in the levels of serum creatinine, BUN and reduced renal histopathological damage such as hydropic degeneration, vascular congestion and tubular necrosis. Therefore, the ethanolic extract of M. pendans exhibits a nephroprotective activity.

Background: Based on ayurvedic/folklore medicine majority of the medicinal plants are used for treatment of different ailments. Sophora interrupta as traditional medicine focused to do the research work for protection of renal injury. Aim: The present study was investigated the nephroprotective activity of Sophora interrupta bedd. against gentamicin-induced acute renal toxicity in wistar rats. Study Design Rats have received gentamicin (40 mg/kg) intraperitoneally (i.p.) once daily for 5 days of the study to induce nephrotoxicity along with test extract of Sophora interrupta bedd. at a dose of 200 &400 mg/kg, p.o. for 21 days. Urinary parameters like Creatinine, Urea, and Uric acid; Biochemical parameters like Alanine transaminase (ALT), Aspartate transaminase (AST), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT), Creatinine, Total protein, and Albumin were measured along with tissue parameters and histopathological observations were carried out. Results: The test extracts Sophora interrupta bedd. showed a prominent protective role against the gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity with significant (P=.001) restoration in abnormal plasma & urine biomarkers as compared to the gentamicin-induced group. Treatment with both the doses (200 & 400 mg/kg) of Sophoria extract showed significantly (P=.001; P=0.01) modified levels of antioxidant enzymes when compared to gentamicin-induced animals evidenced by structural restoration of the kidney. Conclusion: These findings concluded that, Sophora interrupta bedd. exhibits a protective role against Gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity.

citratus, known as zacate de limón (lemongrass), is commonly used in Costa Rica for the treatment of "kidney diseases." Therefore, the activity as renal protector of an aqueous extract of this plant was evaluated after oral administration, in a model of acute kidney injury (AKI) in female Wistar rats. For this, an aqueous extract was characterized by thin layer chromatography and qualitative phytochemical tests. An AKI model induced by potassium chromate in female Wistar rats was carried out. The serum concentration of creatinine, sodium, potassium and glucose were determined, as well as the concentrations of creatinine, sodium, potassium, glucose and proteins in urine, together with the urinary flow determination. A histopathological analysis of the subjects’ kidneys was performed, and the presence of kidney damage was identified. The characterization of the extract by thin layer chromatography, and ferric chloride, Shinoda and Wilson tests gave negative results for phenols, tannins and flavonoids. No positive changes were observed in renal function markers in urine. No histopathological evidence of nephroprotective activity of the aqueous extract of C. citratus was found. It is concluded that the aqueous extract of C. citratus obtained by infusion does not possess nephroprotective activity at a dose of 150 mg/kg evaluated by the AKI in female Wistar rats.

Background: Cisplatin is one of the most remarkable solutions in ‘the war on cancer’. Although cisplatin has been a mainstay for cancer therapy, its use is mainly limited by nephrotoxicity. The current study was aimed to evaluate the ameliorative potential of Terminalia arjuna (TA) in comparison to taurine against cisplatin toxicity. Methods: A total of 36 male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups of 6 rats in each. Group 1 was normal control. Cisplatin @ 5 mg/kg b.wt was injected on day 1 to groups 2, 5 and 6. Aqueous leaf extract of Terminalia arjuna was administered orally @ 400 mg/kg b. wt to groups 3, 5 and Groups 4, 6 recieved taurine orally @ 1000 mg/kg b.wt for 14 days. Blood samples were collected from animals to assess Kidney function tests, oxidative stress and cytokines and renal tissues were examined for histological changes, if any. Result: Antioxidant profile, serobiochemical and cytokine parameters were significantly (P less than 0.05) increased and histopathological studies revealed degenerative changes and marked infiltration in the kidney of group 2 when compared to groups 1, 3 and 4. However, These changes were reversed in groups 5 and 6 that were administered with Terminalia arjuna and taurine, respectively. In conclusion, the results of the present investigation elucidated that both Terminalia arjuna and taurine have potent nephroprotective activity in cisplatin injected Wistar rats.

Drug-induced toxicity is the major concern in the present Era, particularly with Hepato and Nephrotoxicity. Drug- induced renal failure (RF) accounted for 20% in India. As there is an increasing number of potent therapeutics drugs like – NSAID's (Aspirin), Antibiotics, chemotherapy agents etc. Katakabeeja Yoga is mainly indicated in Prameha Chikitsa according to Yogaratnakar. Kataka (Strychnos potatorum. Linn) is Vishaghna, Ashmari, Prameha, Visha etc. Kataka - Independently have potent Antioxidant, Osmotic diuretic activity. Hence the pre- sent study was aimed to evaluate the Nephroprotective activity of Katakabeeja Yoga against Aspirin-induced Ne- phrotoxicity in Wistar rats. Katakabeeja Yoga was prepared after authenticating procured raw drugs and analyzed for preliminary physicochemical, organic and inorganic tests. Either sex Wistar rats weighing 150 – 200 g were selected and randomized into three groups (each group 6 no.) like Normal, Aspirin-induced, or Katakabeeja Yoga treated. Toxicity with Aspirin 100mg/kg orally for 15 days. In the treated group Katakabeeja yoga 0.216g (216mg) was received after administration of Aspirin for 15 days and sacrificed on the 16th day. Before and end of the study, the blood sample was collected for estimation of biomarkers like Serum Creatinine, urea and electro- lytes. The kidney was kept in a 10% formalin solution and sent for histopathology studies. Data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple post hoc procedures. The Aspirin group showed a significant rise in se- rum Creatinine, and urea followed by a decrease the urine output. Katakabeeja Yoga significantly reduced the serum Creatinine and urea followed by an increase in the urine output may have Katakabeeja potent antioxidant, osmotic diuretic activity. The study established that Katakabeeja Yoga possesses a durable Nephroprotective ef- fect against Aspirin-induced Nephrotoxicity. Keywords: Nephroprotective, Kataka, Nephrotoxicity

Background: Sea cucumbers have number of one of a pharmacological effects counting anticancer, anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound healing. Biological properties and therapeutic benefits of Sea cucumbers can be connected to the presence of a wide cluster of bioactive compounds particularly triterpene glycosides (saponins). Aims: The present study aimed to explore the hepatoprotective and nephroprotective activity of Sea cucumbers-saponin (Sc-S) on gentamicin-induced hepatorenal toxicity in rats. Main methods: Eighteen male Wistar rats were divided into three groups, control, gentamycin, and gentamycin+ Sc-S. The hepatorenal toxicity model was induced by gentamycin (80 mg/kg, i.p) for 8 days. Results: The Sc-S group showed a reduction in the concentrations of urea, uric acid, creatinine, MDA and the activities of AST, ALT, and ALP. While it caused a general increase in the levels of CAT and GSH. Microscopic examination appeared a clear enhancement in liver and kidney histology of Sc-S group. Conclusion: The antioxidant activity of Sc-S is the main mechanism for the protection of the liver and kidney against gentamicin toxicity.

Investigation of the spontaneous pituitary adenomas in rat have been limited mainly to light microscopic study. Furth et al. (1973) described them as chromophobic, secreting prolactin. Kovacs et al. (1977) in an ul trastructural investigation of adenomas of old female Long-Evans rats, found that they were composed of prolactin cells. Berkvens et al. (1980) using immunocytochemistry at the light microscopic level, demonstrated that some spontaneous tumors of old Wistar rats could contain GH, TSH or ACTH as well as PRL.

Germfree state and food restriction have been shown to increase life span and delay tumor occurrence in rats. We report here the histologic, immunocytochemical and electron microscopic findings of adenohypophyses of aging, male Lobund-Wistar rats raised at Lobund Laboratories. In our previous study, the morphologic changes in the adenohypophyses of old rats have been extensively investigated by histology, immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy. Lactotroph adenomas were frequent in Long-Evans and Sprague-Dawley rats, whereas gonadotroph adenomas were frequent in Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rats.Male Lobund-Wistar rats were divided into four groups: 1) conventional, which were raised under normal non-germfree environment and received food ad libitum; 2) germfree-food ad libitum; 3) conventional environment-food restricted and 4) germfree-food restricted. The adenohypophyses were removed from 6-month-, 18-month- and 30-month-old rats. For light microscopy, adenohypophyses were fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin.
