The Impact

The paper aims to investigate the level of accumulated digital intellectual capital and investments in digital transformation in the Russian regions and study its impact on the gross regional product and companies’ revenue, as well as on the innovative activity of companies. The study relies on the multiple regression method to find significant relationships between digitalization and performance indicators in 85 Russian regions and cities of federal significance. The originality of the approach used in this study lies in the development of the digital capital theory: the authors assess the impact of accumulated digital intellectual capital and investment on the performance of manufacturing and service companies and show the difference in return on investment between sectors. The results of the study show that though Russian regions are at the initial stage of the digital economy development, digitalization has a significant positive impact on the financial and innovative performance. Manufacturing companies primarily use structural capital to create customer value. Service-oriented companies also receive a positive return on investment in human and relational capital. The results obtained can be applied in practice by the business community to support investment decisions and analyse the processes of creating digital intellectual capital in companies.

The Intellectual Capital theory emerged mainly from analyses and observations in business sector based on the growing importance of intellectual capital as a production factor and on its contribution to create value and competitive advantages. The importance of managing intellectual capital is also recognized in public organizations although the theory reveals differences in application to the public sector and is less developed in this environment. In fact, most methodologies to manage intellectual capital were developed in the business area and research at public sector level did not verify the same attention. In literature it is possible to realize that although there are some studies that analyse the management of intellectual capital in the public sector, there are few studies that suggest methodologies specific to this sector. Thus, this article aims to discuss the main aspects about the applicability of intellectual capital theory to the public sector and to propose a taxonomy of intangible assets appropriate to this sector through critical review of main contributions of literature. The analysis allowed finding several arguments that justify the application of the theory to public sector. It also allowed suggesting a classification of intellectual capital based on the intangible assets considered relevant to public sector namely the set of the followed categories: Human capital, Structural capital, Relational capital, Services capital and Public Commitment capital.

In the intellectual capital and knowledge management (KM) literatures, emotional capital has been a neglected dimension. From the late 1980s into the 1990s, there was burgeoning interest in intellectual capital, which had a substantial impact on the early development of KM. Over the past decade, social capital theory has sparked a new wave of thinking in KM. The concept of emotional capital has the potential to further enrich the knowledge base of the KM discipline. This article explicates the concept of emotional capital and provides a framework for understanding its role in organisational KM.

In the era of knowledge economy, improving quality of labor force has great effort on enhancing innovation ability of Chinese enterprise and improving competitiveness of the whole country. Currently, the quantity of Chinese labor force isn’t enough mainly due to several reasons: firstly, population policy emphasized “quantity” rather than “quality”; secondly, the structure in labor force market is irrational; thirdly, big differences exist in labor quality between urban and rural areas; fourthly, intellectual capital investment in education and training has been far from enough. However, Intellectual Capital theory has provided a solid theoretical basis for the author to improve labor quality. It suggests setting up an active policy to promote intellectual capital investment; strengthen intellectual capital investment in education system; encourage more and more Chinese enterprises to use Intellectual Capital business model in management; and set up special founding for young generation.

Intellectual capital in the form of intangible assets is now variously estimated to constitute 60-75 percent of corporate value, on average. Current debates about intellectual capital are part of the search for a methodology to measure the knowledge base of a firm. This is critical since a failure to properly conceptualize the nature and value of knowledge assets condemns firms and whole economies to fight competitive battles with outdated weapons and tactics. The purpose of this chapter is to present a comparative evaluation of some of the most commonly known intellectual capital (IC) measurement models. These models include Skandia’s IC Navigator, Intellectual Capital Services’ ICIndex™, The Technology Broker’s IC Audit, Sveiby’s intangible asset monitor (IAM), citation-weighted patents, and real option theory. Each model is classified along dimensions of temporal orientation, system dynamics, and causal direction.
