The intercropping of ryegrass and red clover constitutes a sustainable alternative to mitigate the adverse effects of intensive livestock production on grassland degradation by increasing forage yield and quality. The implementation of biofertilization technologies has been widely used to improve soil nutritional properties, and therefore has the potential to ensure the success of this multicrop system. To determine the impact of bioaugmentation on forage growth and quality, as well as the associate changes in the rhizosphere bacterial community, we evaluated the inoculation with two plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) under reduced nitrogen usage. Overall, Herbaspirillum sp. AP21 had a larger effect than Azospirillum brasilense D7 on plant growth. Inoculation with Herbaspirillum sp. AP21 together with 50% of the required nitrogen rate increased shoot dry weight, crude protein, and shoot nitrogen content, and decreased the amount of neutral detergent fiber. PGPB inoculation changed the rhizosphere bacterial community structure, which associated with forage growth and quality. We conclude that PGPB inoculation has the potential to improve the growth of the ryegrass-red clover system, decreasing the requirements for nitrogen fertilization.

Abstract PurposeEpiphytic bacteria play an important role in macroalgae growth, development, and morphogenesis. However, epiphytic bacterial communities on male and female macroalgae have not been reported. Porphyra haitanensis is one of the main economic macroalgae.In order to explore the similarities and differences of epiphytic bacterial community structure between male and female macroalgae of Porphyra haitanensis.MethodsWe investigated the composition, diversity of epiphytic bacterial communities between male and female Porphyra haitanensis by 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing.ResultsThe divergences of bacterial community compositions occurred between males and females. Both males and females had their unique bacterial microbiota, such as, Armatimonadetes and Rokubacteria are the unique phyla of male Porphyra haitanensis, Chlamydiae is a unique phylum of female Porphyra haitanensis. The epiphytic bacteria on both male and female Porphyra haitanensis have the similar predictive functions, but they also have their own specific functions, respectively.The specific functions of epiphytic bacteria on female Porphyra haitanensis were sulfite_respiration, nitrogen_fixation, nitrate_ammonification, chlorate_reducers and anoxygenic_photoautotrophy_S_oxidizing. ConclusionsThis study provides a basis for exploring the mechanism of epiphytic bacterial communities on dioecious algae and are of great significance for further understanding the relationships between epiphytic microbial communities and the sex of algae.

Epiphytic bacteria on the surfaces of submerged macrophytes play important roles in the growth of the host plant, nutrient cycling, and the conversion of pollutants in aquatic systems. A knowledge of the epiphytic bacterial community structure could help us to understand these roles. In this study, the abundance, diversity, and functions of the epiphytic bacterial community of Myriophyllum spicatum collected from Baiyangdian Lake in June, August, and October 2019 were studied using quantitative PCR (qPCR), high-throughput sequencing, and the prediction of functions. An analysis using qPCR showed that the epiphytic bacteria were the most abundant in October and the least abundant in August. High-throughput sequencing revealed that Proteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Aeromonas were the dominant phylum, class, and genus in all the samples. The common analyses of operational taxonomic units (OTUs), NMDS, and LDA showed that the epiphytic bacterial communities were clustered together based on the seasons. The results of a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) showed that the key water quality index that affected the changes of epiphytic bacterial community of M. spicatum was the total phosphorus (TP). The changes in abundance of Gammaproteobacteria negatively correlated with the TP. Predictive results from FAPROTAX showed that the predominant biogeochemical cycle functions of the epiphytic bacterial community were chemoheterotrophy, nitrate reduction, and fermentation. These results suggest that the epiphytic bacterial community of M. spicatum from Baiyangdian Lake varies substantially with the seasons and environmental conditions.

Viruses are the most abundant and ubiquitous biological entities in various ecosystems, yet few investigations of viral communities in wetlands have been performed. To address this data gap, water samples from 6 wetlands were randomly collected across northeast China; viruses in the water were concentrated by sequential tangential flow filtration, and viral communities were assessed through randomly amplified polymorphic DNA-PCR (RAPD-PCR) with 4 decamer oligonucleotide primers. Principal coordinate analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis of the DNA fingerprints showed that viral community compositions differed among the water samples: communities in the 2 coastal wetlands were more similar to each other than to those in the 4 freshwater wetlands. The Shannon-Weaver index (H) and evenness index (E) of the RAPD-PCR fingerprint also differed among the 6 wetlands. Mantel test revealed that the changes in viral communities in wetland water were most closely related to the water NH4+-N and inorganic C content, followed by total K, P, C and NO3--N. DNA sequence analysis of the excised bands revealed that viruses accounted for ~40% of all sequences. Among the hit viral homologs, the majority belonged to the Microviridae. Moreover, variance partitioning analysis showed that the viral community contributed 24.58% while environmental factors explained 30.56% of the bacterial community variation, indicating that the bacterial community composition was strongly affected by both viral community and water variables. This work provides an initial outline of the viral communities from different types of wetlands in northeast China and improves our understanding of the viral diversity in these ecosystems.

In recent years, the number of pasture species and cultivars commercially available to farmers in New Zealand has increased significantly. Reasons for this include increased commercial activity in the development and supply of proprietary cultivars, and more specialisation in New Zealand's pastoral agriculture. In particular, pasture cultivars are increasingly marketed as proprietary products with associated technical support. This year there are 109 certified cultivars available, belonging to 23 grass, legume and herb species. As a result, farmers are now able to develop improved pasture feed supply, but they are somewhat confused about pasture species and cultivars, and this frustrates their aims to produce high quality animal products from productive pastures. Accordingly, the herbage seeds industry needs to work from a clear reference list, to avoid any confusion when supplying farmers and overseas clients with their seed requirements. Our list of pasture species, types and cultivars available within New Zealand aims to be that reference. Clover cultivars grown with ryegrass were compared in an establishment year under dairy cow grazing. There was no difference in total annual productton but summer production was greater with Pawera red clover and with Kopu or Pitau white clovers. Clovers differed little in the proportion of nitrogen fixed, except during summer when values were highest for Pawera. Pawera was less prone to nematode attack than white clover cultivars but was more susceptible to clover rot. Resident clovers and high buried seed levels (e.g., 11-91 kg/ha) made introduction of new clover cultivars difficult. Sown clovers established best (50-70% of total clover plants) when drilled into soil treated with dicamba and glyphosate. One honeybee or bumblebee working on each square metre of white clover or red clover gave adequate pollination. This could be obtained with one hive of honeybees to each three hectares of flowering clover. Lucerne seeding averaged only 10% of the potential maximum in open fields with honey- or bumblebees. In cages where honeybees were forced to gather pollen, this was raised to 30% but it was not possible to increase seed set significantly in the fields.
