Several different materials have been used for production of domestic water pipes throughout history. In recent years, the use of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipe has increased dramatically, yet the potential for leaching of phthalates, which are endocrine disrupting compounds associated with adverse reproductive effects in humans, has not been examined. In this study, the potential of chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (cPVC) and red, blue, and heat PEX piping to leach phthalates into static hot and cold water after 2, 8, and 48 hours was evaluated. Concentrations of six phthalates, dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), benzyl-butyl phthalate (BBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and di(n-octyl) phthalate (DNOP), were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Pipe type (F3,71 = 15.6, P = 0.001) contributed significantly to phthalate concentrations in water, while temperature (F4,71 = 1.74, P = 0.106) and time (F4,71 = 1.02, P = 0.427) were not significant factors. Significantly higher concentrations of DEP, DBP, and BBP were observed in cPVC pipe (<method detection limits (MDL) to 466 ng L−1, 252–4,219 ng L−1, 473–18,400 ng L−1, respectively) compared to blue PEX (T2 = 12.2, P < 0.001; <MDL, <MDL − 140 ng L−1, <MDL − 459 ng L−1, respectively), red PEX (T2 = 19.3, P < 0.001; <MDL, <MDL − 188 ng L−1, <MDL − 881 ng L−1, respectively), and heat PEX (T2 = 19.9, P < 0.001; <MDL, <MDL − 162 ng L−1, <MDL − 169 ng L−1, respectively). Phthalate exposure from drinking water via cPVC or PEX is low when compared to other dietary sources. Nonetheless, a shift from cPVC to PEX pipes in households would decrease potential exposure to phthalates.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death amongst American women. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), especially bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, have adverse effects on human health. However, the association of BPA and phthalates with breast cancer remains conflicting. This study aims to investigate the association of BPA and phthalates with breast cancer. Methods: Correlative studies were identified by systematically searching three electronic databases, namely, PubMed, Web of Sciences, and Embase, up to November 2020. All data were analyzed using Stata 15.0. Results: A total of nine studies, consisting of 7820 breast cancer cases and controls, were included. The urinary phthalate metabolite mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) and mono-2-isobutyl phthalate (MiBP) were negatively associated with breast cancer (OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.60–0.90; OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.58–0.98, respectively). However, the overall ORs for BPA, mono-ethyl phthalate (MEP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHHP), mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP), mono-(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate (MCPP), and mono-butyl phthalate (MBP) were 0.85 (95% CI: 0.69–1.05), 0.96 (95% CI: 0.62–1.48), 1.12 (95% CI: 0.88–1.42), 1.13 (95% CI: 0.74–1.73), 1.01 (95% CI: 0.74–1.40), 0.74 (95% CI: 0.48–1.14), and 0.80 (95% CI: 0.55–1.15), respectively, suggesting no significant association. The sensitivity analysis indicated that the results were relatively stable. Conclusion: Phthalate metabolites MBzP and MiBP were passively associated with breast cancer, whereas no associations were found between BPA, MEP, MEHHP, MEHP, MEOHP, MCPP, and MBP and breast cancer. More high-quality case-control studies or persuasive cohort studies are urgently needed to draw the best conclusions.

A Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) based analytical method was developed and validated using HPLC-PDA and LC-MS/MS for quantitative determination of phthalates (Dimethyl phthalate (DMP), Diethyl phthalate (DEP), Benzyl Butyl Phthalate (BzBP), Dibutylphthalate(DBP), Diethylhexyl phthalate(DEHP), Di-n-octyl phthalate (DOP) in different cosmetic products (After Shave Lotion, Deodorants, Perfume and Liquid Body Lotion). The DLLME based developed and validated analytical method was found specific, sensitive, accurate and precise. The accuracy (% recovery) of the method at a spiking level of 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mg L-1 in the different cosmetic product was found in the range of 92-108. The interday and intraday precision (%RSD) of the method was found less than 15. Out of six analyzed phthalates, only four phthalates were detected in different cosmetic products. Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and Di-n-octyl phthalate (DOP) were detected in aftershave lotion. Diethyl phthalate (DEP) was detected in deodorants. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and Diethyl phthalate (DEP) were detected in perfumes. None of the phthalates were detected in liquid body lotion.

Abstract Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) like phthalates, mostly discharged by industrial effluents, cause detrimental effects to different life forms, and hence their removal from constituent wastewater is necessary. This study investigated the kinetics of biomass growth and biodegradation of benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) and di-butyl phthalate (DBP) by Arthrobacter sp. in a surfactant aided batch system. The effect of different surfactants on aqueous solubility of BBP and DBP was initially examined, which showed that Tween 80 resulted in maximum bioavailability and biodegradation efficiency of the phthalates by the bacterium without inhibiting the biomass growth. Compared with BBP, DBP was found to be efficiently degraded and supported the bacterial growth within a short period of time over the entire concentration tested in the range 100–1,000 mg L−1. A maximum biomass concentration of 1.819 g L−1 was obtained at 120 h for a DBP concentration of 600 mg L−1 in the presence of Tween 80, which is 5.66-fold increase in biomass concentration as compared with only DBP as the sole substrate. For evaluating the biokinetic parameters involved in DBP biodegradation, the experimental data on DBP utilization were fitted to various kinetic models as reported in the literature.

Abstract This study examined the effect of polyphosphate on removal of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as nonylphenol and bisphenol-A by activated carbons. It was found that polyphosphate aided in the removal of nonylphenol and bisphenol- A. Polyphosphate reacted with nonylphenol, likely through dipole-dipole interaction, which then improved the nonylphenol removal. Calcium interfered with this reaction by causing competition. It was found that polyphosphate could accumulate on carbon while treating a river. The accumulated polyphosphate then aided nonylphenol removal. The extent of accumulation was dependent on the type of carbon. The accumulation occurred more extensively with the wood-based used carbon than with the coal-based used carbon due to the surface charge of the carbon. The negatively charged wood-based carbon attracted the positively charged calcium-polyphosphate complex more strongly than the uncharged coal-based carbon. The polyphosphate-coated activated carbon was also effective in nonylphenol removal. The effect was different depending on the type of carbon. Polyphosphate readily attached onto the wood-based carbon due to its high affinity for polyphosphate. The attached polyphosphate then improved the nonylphenol removal. However, the coating failed to attach polyphosphate onto the coal-based carbon. The nonylphenol removal performance of the coal-based carbon remained unchanged after the polyphosphate coating.
