Education is completely linked by spiritual and mental aspects and has direct effect on thoughts and ideas; even it can make a pattern and line behavior for humans’ life. Indeed if educating system be able to has a positive impact on its’ inputs, then it can import its influence to the whole society by its outputs which their number is not less. Especially in art and architecture this influence would be multiple and multilateral, because students are the future designers and peoples’ life will be influenced by them. So we ought to pay more attention to education phenomenon. Limited natural sources and the destructive effects on next generations’ portion attracted the attention of all sciences and different professional majors to find how to generate new sources of energy that they called Sustainable. Architecture as a linked field to other knowledge and sciences was not excepted and like past periods of history, tried to find best solutions and appropriate responses. Today, the definition of sustainable and the domain of it have developed and it is known in vast meanings and categories. Education is one of these categories that it has to be containing the word, sustainable. Sustainable education as a first stage of attitude and effect on future can play an important role. Sustainable Architectural Education and try to trace methods of sustainable architectural education is the target of this paper.

This paper introduces an alternative teaching model in a virtual architectural design studio, its application, impacts and constraints. This model aims for achieving collaborative learning through facilitating students to Inhabit, Design, Construct and Evaluate (IDCE) their designs collaboratively in a multi-user real-time 3D virtual environment platform (Activeworlds). The application of this model in virtual design studio (VDS) teaching has favorably impacted students' motivation for active, creative and explorative learning, social dynamics between studio participants. It also fostered learning electronic communication, collaboration techniques and etiquette in addition to design technology. The model assisted in developing collaborative experience and shared responsibility. However, there are some drawbacks of the virtual environment platform that hindered having a responsive design environment to users' needs with especially in modeling and rate of viewing. The advantages and constraints of applying the IDCE teaching model in a multi-user real-time 3D virtual environment for first year students at the University of Sydney are addressed in this paper.

With the ability of linking distant partners and diverse bodies of students and faculty, virtual design studios provide unique opportunities for examining cultural, contextual, and methodological differences in design and design collaboration. However, most evaluations of virtual design studio in the recent literature have focused primarily on technical and operational issues. In contrast, the social and cultural dimensions of virtual design studio and their pedagogical implications have not been adequately examined. To address this gap, this article examines the experience and outcomes of a recent virtual design studio involving international collaboration between faculty and student partners. Specifically, it looks at how presence of differences and process of dialogic learning create pedagogical opportunities in a collaborative 'virtual' environment. Based on the case study, this article argues that through dialogues, collaboration, and negotiation of cultural, contextual and methodological differences, collaborative virtual design studio offers an alternative to traditional design studio based on the primacy of individual practice and the master-apprentice model of learning. By creatively utilizing the collaborative environment involving diverse partners, virtual design studio can foster a critical understanding of cross-cultural design process and the significance of dialogues and negotiation in design.

Project-based learning offers an engaging instructional method to make learners active constructors of knowledge. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of learning in two project-based learning of construction through model making in architecture using a case study and by designing. Model making is an innovative and time-consuming approach in teaching construction as this approach rely heavily on student-teacher partnership mimicking the studio learning. Learning construction through model making needs students to take an active role and to be ‘in-charge' of their learning and learning process. The study employs a survey to 78 participants of undergraduate architecture students. The results of this study demonstrated architecture students learn construction effectively using the model making method. This project-based learning allows students to have construction knowledge to consider buildability in their architecture design studio. The result can be used to improve teaching and learning of construction in architectural education.

In most instances engineering design courses are offered during the senior year of the undergraduate curriculum. These senior level design courses allow the students to apply different engineering concepts to design a product, with the expectation of preparing engineering students for a distributed and global workplace. Another possible alternative is to provide a simulated education environment where students can design products in a distributed and collaborative environment. The use of Internet in education has opened the possibility to explore and adopt new approaches to teach distributed collaborative engineering design and analysis. The Internet Design Studio, presented in this paper, tries to fulfill this need. In the Internet Design Studio each student is provided with a virtual design studio space for each project. The design studio spaces can be imagined as a virtual space containing design tools, applications, software and theoretical materials that facilitates students to design and perform analysis. Conceptually, a student enters the studio space and grabs appropriate tools to perform different design tasks. The design tools in the Internet Design Studio are web-based and support collaborations by allowing multiple users to view, discuss, create and utilize same models of the product to perform analysis. In this paper the framework of the Internet Design Studio is presented. The applicability of the framework is demonstrated through the use of several multi-designer collaborative design tools.

Purpose Sustainability, especially in terms of development and growth, has been in the agenda of the world community for several decades. However, apparently not all the aspects of sustainability are given equal importance. Ecologic and economic components of sustainability have been in the focal point of many theoretical and practical works, as the social aspect has been mostly left out of emphasis. The purpose of this paper is to examine the social aspects of sustainability and its relation to architecture, with respect to the strong connection between the society and the built environment. Design/methodology/approach The core of the paper consists of a case study conducted at a design studio course for third-year architecture students whereas the outcomes of the student works on the design problem are evaluated as examples for design approaches to reflect the effects of the built environment on social sustainability. The case study is supported with a literature review and examination of existing approaches to similar subjects regarding social sustainability. Findings The findings resulted in a better understanding of social sustainability in architectural education which is reflected on the built environment through several architectural strategies. Originality/value This paper contributes to the literature by providing a holistic understanding of sustainability including its social aspects and creating an awareness for the importance of social sustainability in architectural education.
