NiCrMo coatings with and without dispersed SiO2 were deposited using high-velocity air-fuel technique. Thermogravimetric experiments were conducted in 5% O2 + 500 vppm HCl + N2 with and without a KCl deposit at 600°C for up to 168 h. The SiO2-containing coating showed lower weight change as a result of formation of a protective and adherent Cr-rich oxide scale. SiO2 decelerated short-circuit diffusion of Cr3+ through scale’s defects, e.g., vacancies, and promoted the selective oxidation of Cr to form the protective Cr-rich oxide scale. Furthermore, the presence of SiO2 led to less subsurface depletion of Cr in the coating, and accordingly less corrosion of the substrate. The formed corrosion product on the SiO2-free coating was highly porous, non-adherent, and thick.

Abstract Over the past 30 years, there has been considerable interest in the development of thermally sprayed thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for aerospace and land based turbine applications. The use of TBCs enables higher operating temperatures, resulting in significant fuel efficiency savings. This paper reports on the development of dense Yttria Stabilised Zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings produced by High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) spraying using acetylene as the fuel gas. The use of a high temperature gas erosion rig allowed the controlled evaluation of erodent size, velocity, impact angle, and temperature on coating performance. The work also covers the optimization of process parameters, including powder morphology, stand-off distance, oxygen to fuel ratio, gas pressures, and flowrates, and their effect on coating characteristics such as deposition efficiency, microhardness, and surface roughness.

The presence in the far-UV spectra of early-type stars of spectral lines of superionized atoms is argument of controversial debate among astronomers. Presently there is agreement on the non-radiative origin of these ions but not on the proposed mechanisms for their production nor on the proposed locations in the stellar atmosphere where they are abundant. Cassinelli et al. (1978) suggest that the Auger mechanism is operative in a cool wind blowing above a narrow corona to produce these ions; Lucy and White (1980) introduce radiative instabilities growing into hot blobs distributed across the stellar wind; Doazan and Thomas (1982) make these ions to be formed in both pre- and post-coronal, high temperature regions at low and high velocity respectively.
