For the past six years, a course on flow visualization has been offered to mixed teams of graduate and undergraduate engineering and fine arts photography students at the University of Colorado. The course has significant technical content on flow visualization and photographic techniques, and includes some emphasis on documentation and the interpretation of results, particularly with respect to atmospheric dynamics as revealed by clouds. What makes this course unusual is the emphasis on the production of images for aesthetic purposes: for art. While a number of art/science collaborations are growing worldwide, both in professional and academic communities, typically scientists are expected to contribute technical support while artists produce art. A particularly unusual aspect of this course is that all students are expected to demonstrate both aesthetic sensibility and scientific discipline. Another is that students are not constrained to study specific phenomena or use specific techniques; instead, creativity is required. A major outcome from this course is a series of stunning images. In addition, anecdotal evidence suggests that this course has a lasting impact on students’ perception of fluid physics, which can be contrasted to the effect of traditional introductory fluids courses. This raises the question of whether this impact is significant with respect to students’ understanding and appreciation of fluid mechanics, and if so, what aspect of the flow visualization course is most important? A survey instrument is being designed to quantify whether students’ awareness of fluid mechanics in the world around them changes when they take these courses and if students’ attitudes towards fluids is changed when they take these courses.

West Hollywood as Symbol: The Significance of Place in the Construction of a Gay Identity

The 1984 municipal incorporation of West Hollywood, California offers an opportunity to explore two related themes: (1) the role of place in the creation of identity generally, and (2) the role of place in the creation of sexual identity in particular. Work on the second subject has largely concentrated on the political economy of gay territories, although there has been an ongoing concern with the symbolic importance of these places. Although these studies have provided valuable insights on these themes, they do not reflect the renewed concern in humanistic geography with the normative importance of place, and the study of morally valued ways of life. These latter topics provide alternative avenues into questions of identity. In the coverage of the incorporation campaign, the gay press presented an idealized image of the city. In defining a new gay identity, the gay press utilized the holistic quality of place to weave together the ‘natural’ and cultural elements of West Hollywood. This idealized ‘gay city’ united the place's real and imagined physical attributes with social and personal characteristics of gay men. More simply, the qualities of the city itself expressed intellectual and moral virtues, such that characterizations of the city became part of a narrative defining the meaning of ‘gay’. This new gay male identity included seven elements: creativity, aesthetic sensibility, an orientation toward entertainment or consumption, progressiveness, responsibility, maturity, and centrality. The effort to create an identity centered on West Hollywood was relatively conservative in the sense that it was not a fundamental challenge to existing social and political systems. Rather, it reflected a strategy based on an ethnicity model, seeking to ‘demarginalize’ gays and to bring them closer to the symbolic ‘center’ of US society.

Romantic wanderings of Poles across Saxon SwitzerlandThe history of Polish tourism in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains as well as the literary and artistic reception of the landscape and culture of Saxon Switzerland have never been discussed in detail. The present article is a research reconnaissance. The beginnings and development of tourism in the region came in the late 18th and early 19th century. The 1800s were marked by the emergence of the first German-language descriptions of Saxon Switzerland, which served as guidebooks at the time. From the very beginning Poles, too, participated in the tourist movement in the area. The author of the article seeks to follow the increasing interest in Saxon Switzerland and the appearance of the first descriptions of the region in Polish literature and culture. She provides a detailed analysis of Polish-language accounts of micro-trips to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains by Andrzej Edward Koźmian, Stanisław Deszert, Antoni Edward Odyniec, Klementyna Hoffman née Tańska and a poem by Maciej Bogusz Stęczyński. As the analysis demonstrates, in the first half of the 19th century Poles liked to visit these relatively low mountains in Central Europe and tourism in the region is clearly part of the history of Polish mountain tourism. Thanks to unique aesthetic and natural values of the mountains, full of varied rocky formations, reception of their landscape had an impact of the development of the aesthetic sensibility of Polish Romantics. Direct contact with nature and the landscape of Saxon Switzerland also served an important role in the shaping of spatial imagination of Polish tourists, encouraging them to explore other mountains in Europe and the world, including the Alps. On the other hand thanks to the development of tourist infrastructure in Saxon Switzerland, facilitating trips in the region and making the most attractive spots available to inexperienced tourists, micro-trips to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains marked an important stage in the development of mountain tourism on a popular-recreational level. Polish-language accounts of trips to Saxon Switzerland from the first half of the 20th century are a noteworthy manifestation of the beginnings of Polish travel literature.

Where chapter two deals with ordinary moments in extraordinary films, chapter three explores another aspect of the spectrum of the everyday in cinema: the concept of the everyday as a film style, and its relationship to the everyday as subject matter. This chapter examines the way the everyday as film style has been theorised—predominately as an aesthetic sensibility that privileges the undramatic and routine as a conduit to the profound or transcendent. Chapter three asserts that while this scholarship has been useful in illuminating positive representations of the everyday, its attempts to quarantine the everyday from the dramatic are problematic and ultimately reductive. Instead, through detailed case studies of Bresson’s Money (1983) and Haneke’s The Seventh Continent (1989), the chapter presents an alternate approach that allows for a more nuanced appreciation of everyday aesthetics, allowing for films which do not treat the everyday as strictly positive. These films are unsettling precisely for their lack of authorial guidance on how to respond to horrific narrative events; film style is pared back in such a way that moments of violence are afforded the same aesthetic weight as the representation of ordinary and mundane routines.

From the early 1970s, the Kipper Kids (Harry Kipper and Harry Kipper, aka Brian Routh and Martin Von Haselberg) became notorious for the danger, excess, strangeness, and baffled hilarity of their frequently drunken ‘ceremonies’. This chapter accounts for the former notoriety of the Kipper Kids to ask further questions about the performance of extremity as an aesthetic category in the 1970s. The theme of sabotage – or self-sabotage – emerges as a crucial element in the performance art of the Kipper Kids, in terms of their devising and presentation of specific ceremonies and works, and in their pursuit of careers as artists committed to art’s anti-aesthetic sensibility.

Michel Bergmann vermittelt in seiner Trilogie einen generationenübergreifenden retrospektiven Blick auf die deutsche Nachkriegszeit und auf den Alltag der in Deutschland lebenden Juden. Die Romane zeigen die herausragende Rolle des Humors beim Erinnern an die traumatische Vergangenheit und ebenso für die Lösung der Schwierigkeiten, auf die die Überlebenden in ihrer als fremd wahrgenommenen Umgebung stießen. Aus dem Buch geht hervor, dass der Humor zu einem unerlässlichen Mittel zur Traumabewältigung wird, sodass er eine soziale (Wieder-)Eingliederung der Hauptfiguren in Deutschland begünstigt, zu der auch die ab den 50er Jahren spürbare wirtschaftliche Verbesserung beiträgt. Ihr Leben in der Bundesrepublik bringt eine beginnende Versöhnung mit der Gesellschaft der ehemaligen Feinde mit sich. Sie wird im Wesentlichen auf zweierlei Art gefördert: Einerseits durch die Entstehung von neuen Liebesbeziehungen zwischen Holocaustüberlebenden und (nichtjüdischen) Deutschen; andererseits infolge der von einigen jüdischen Figuren empfundenen Dankbarkeit gegenüber denjenigen, die während des Holocaust ihr Überleben im Untergrund ermöglicht hatten.
