Purpose The complexity and criticality of healthcare services highlight the importance of maintenance management function in healthcare facilities. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on maintenance management of healthcare facilities and hospital buildings to provide an organized literature review and identify gaps from the perspective of research and practice. Design/methodology/approach The paper categorizes the literature and adopts a review hierarchy according to maintenance management functions in hospital buildings. It explores the impact of those functions on the performance of maintenance activities in hospitals. Furthermore, it examines the role of information technology and automated decision support systems in facilitating hospital maintenance management functions and performance. Findings Literature on maintenance management in healthcare facilities and hospital buildings has so far been very limited. Recently published literature focusing on healthcare facilities management and its maintenance management functions is classified into various areas and sub-areas. The paper highlights gaps in the literature and suggests avenues for future research and improvements. Originality/value The paper contains a comprehensive listing of publications and their classifications according to various attributes. It will be useful for researchers, maintenance managers, practitioners and stakeholders concerned with facility management of hospital buildings.

Islam, which spread out to Central Asia after its conquest by the Arab armies in early 8th century, has expanded and taken roots in the spiritual and everyday life of each ethnic group of the region in its own way. In its Central Asian geo-cultural contexts, similar to other regions where it came to be the faith of majority, it is more prone to integrated characteristics, including traditional ethnic beliefs and ritualistic elements. The study of Islam among other things in the context of local traditional rituals, particularly the funerary traditions and observances, which has also kept many cultural elements pre-existing the arrival of Islam, has profound meaning in many aspects; such as re-interpretation of the afterlife views and development of cycle of observances and ceremonies that are performed in the hope of earning merit on behalf of deceased and a hope for the day when all who died rise again. The focus of this paper is to present the funerary ritual cycle of Tajik Muslims. The limits of the contribution are set to Tajikistan; but also refer to corresponding and parallel ceremonies observed among the Tajiks living in other neighbouring countries. The impact of this contribution is both in its inventory of the literature on the topic but also on discussion of the importance of these rituals and how the communities feel about the reasons and performance of these ceremonies. The ceremonies that provide merit for both deceased and their kin award them with a sustaining hope that they all will rise and unite in the Last Day. The material for this contribution was collected through group and individual interviews of people from various regions of Tajikistan (April-September, 2014), personal observations and from previous studies on the topic. In what follows I will provide a short literature review on existing studies on funerary traditions of Tajik Muslims and also a descriptive compendium of all currently practiced cycles of funerary ceremonies.

This study identifies two main variables and one moderating variable that have an influence on the consulting role of internal auditors and the impact on a firm’s growth opportunities and performance and specifies how each of them can exert its influence. This study is based on a literature review, underlying theory that is stewardship theory and findings of exploratory interviews by the present researcher; and contributes to the literature by developing a specific and structured research model. Firstly, it explains the development of hypotheses based on the literature and findings of exploratory interviews. It presents a detailed review of the variables influencing the internal audit consulting in which it gives an impact on the firm’s growth as well as the performance. Finally, the theoretical linkages between each relationship in the framework of this study are presented in this study.

This paper contributes to the strategic alliance literature by undertaking a literature review of the burgeoning strategic alliance literature published in the last three decades in the mainstream management journals to fulfil two primary objectives. First, to bring a coherent structure into the fairly vast and growing alliance literature and second, to serve as a medium for a holistic understanding of the major life stages of strategic alliances. This is done by first dividing the alliance literature into three distinct yet related alliance life stages namely the pre-alliance stage, alliance formation stage and the alliance management and performance stage, and then by discussing in detail the three alliance stages individually. The paper would be useful for academics as well as practitioners looking to get a holistic understanding of strategic alliances and its three distinct yet related life stages and the key research papers which have been published focussing on each of these alliance stages.

Gamification is described as the art of changing human activity to a game-like environment to gain user engagement. Rimigs is a developed gamification system discussed in this research and was built based on Octalysis framework. This research aims to design and identify the impact of using a gamification system on students’ motivation and performance, especially in programming classes. Through Rimigs, students’ engagement and performance can be enhanced by freely choosing tasks or quests according to the rank points, completing these tasks or quests, getting experience points, getting rewards, avoiding punishment at certain times, and competing with others friends. The proposed research was done by using the iterative methodologies and consists of four phases, starting from i) literature review, which identifies the Octalysis’ core, ii) design, which identifies the game elements used in the system and designing the unified modeling language (UML) diagram of the system, iii) testing, which involve the user in the using of the system, and iv) implementation, which is the analysis step for the impact of Rimigs in students’ performance and engagement. This research finds that Rimigs as a gamification system can positively impact both students’ motivation and performance.

The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the current state of the linkage between corporate governance and performance. Corporate governance is by far the most important subject that should be studied due to its role and significance. Accordingly, there is intensive literature on corporate governance and its possible impact on performance. By conducting a systematic literature review, the authors provide the results of frequently used variables that supposed to reflect the character of corporate governance on firm performance. The study covers the findings of empirical papers that analyze the impact of “board size,” “percentage of independent directors,” “CEO duality,” “ownership concentration,” “audit committee and auditor reputation,” “board meetings,” and “firm size.” The examination of the reviewed studies indicates that there is a need to explain the competing findings observed among firms, markets, and countries by developing a theoretical explanation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate significant impact of partner similarity on the success of horizontal alliances in logistics service providers (LSPs) from China. Design/methodology/approach Primary data were collected via questionnaire distribution to 380 Chief Executive Officers and Managing Directors in 262 small and medium logistics enterprises in China. There are 316 valid questionnaires for further analysis with 83 percent accuracy in response rate. Structural equation modeling was used to test the impact of partner similarity on alliance management capability, stability and performance. Findings Partner similarity and logistics alliance management capability (LAMC) are positively correlated to alliance stability and performance in horizontal alliances among Chinese LSPs, especially competence similarity and cultural similarity. Moreover, alliance stability mediates the impact of partner similarity and LAMC on alliance performance. Research limitations/implications The basic limitation of this research is to collect data just from small and medium logistics enterprises that operate in China with sample size (n=316). This research could further be extended to other regions in China or other countries. Practical implications This research verifies the positive relationship between partner fit and management capability. Besides, based on research findings, the research proposes guidelines for LSPs pursuing horizontal alliances Originality/value This research proposes an experimental model for Chinese LSPs to cooperate successfully and build horizontal alliances in order to increase their effective customer response capability.

In the last thirty years the link between firm age and performance has fascinated a lot of scholars. In fact, since 1990 there has been a major attention on management studies on this topic. But the debate on this theme have produced mixed results, which resulted in extensive economics discussion, albeit without a systemic vision. The firm age literature has not yet developed a paradigm. Starting to a simple question: “age benefits performance?”, the purpose of this paper is to present a systematic review of the existing literature. The critical examination of the relation between firm age and performance provides new insights for executives.
