In this paper, magnetic composite photocatalysts were prepared through depositing TiO2 on the surface of NiFe2O4 by sol-gel method. The composition, structure and magnetism of the samples are tested by XRD, TEM and VSM, respectively. The photoactivity of the as-prepared photocatalysts was investigated by degrading methyl orange under UV light. The effect of NiFe2O4 and SiO2 intermediate layer on the activity of photocatalyst was also studied. It has been found that NiFe2O4 has a negative influence on the photocatalytic activity of magnetic TiO2 compounds. The middle layer of SiO2 can effectively improve the photocatalytic activity of magnetic TiO2 compounds.

The microstructure of high-Tc YBa2Cu3O7-X thin films deposited by DC-sputtering on SrTiO3 substrates was analysed by TEM. Films were either (i) deposited in the amorphous state at substrate temperatures < 450°C and crystallised by a heat treatment at 900°C (process 1) or (ii) deposited at around 740°C in the crystalline state (process 2). Cross sections were prepared for TEM analyses and are especially useful for studying film substrate interdiffusion (fig.1). Films deposited in process 1 were polycristalline and the grain size was approximately 200 nm. Films were porous and the size of voids was approximately 100 nm. Between the SrTiO3 substrate and the YBa2Cu3Ox film a densly grown crystalline intermediate layer approximately 150 nm thick covered the SrTiO3 substrate. EDX microanalyses showed that the layer consisted of Sr, Ba and Ti, however, did not contain Y and Cu. Crystallites of the layer were carefully tilted in the microscope and diffraction patterns were obtained in five different poles for every crystallite. These patterns were consistent with the phase (Ba1-XSrx)2TiO4. The intermediate layer was most likely formed during the annealing at 900°C. Its formation can be understood as a diffusion of Ba from the amorphously deposited film into the substrate and diffusion of Sr from the substrate into the film. Between the intermediate layer and the surface of the film the film consisted of YBa2Cu3O7-x grains. Films prepared in process 1 had Tc(R=0) close to 90 K, however, critical currents were as low as jc = 104A/cm2 at 77 K.

Nanopillars-TiO2 thin films was obtained on a borosilicate glass substrate with (S1) and without (S2) polyethylene glycol as template. The photocatalytic behaviour of S1 and S2 thin films was assessed inthe degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution under batch reactor operations. The thin films were characterized by the SEM, XRD, FTIR and AFM analytical methods. BET specific surface area and pore sizes were also obtained. The XRD data confirmed that the TiO2 particles are in its anatase mineral phase. The SEM and AFM images indicated the catalyst is composed with nanosized pillars of TiO2, evenly distributed on the surface of the substrate. The BET specific surface area and pore sizes of S1 and S2 catalyst were found to be 5.217 and 1.420 m2/g and 7.77 and 4.16 nm respectively. The photocatalytic degradation of MB was well studied at wide range of physico-chemical parameters. The effect of solution pH (pH 4.0 to 10.0) and MB initial concentration (1.0 to 10.0 mg/L) was extensively studied and the effect of several interfering ions, i.e., cadmium nitrate, copper sulfate, zinc chloride, sodium chloride, sodium nitrate, sodium nitrite, glycine, oxalic acid and EDTA in the photocatalytic degradation of MB was demonstrated. The maximum percent removal of MB was observed at pH 8.0 beyond which it started decreasing and a low initial concentration of the pollutant highly favoured the photocatalytic degradation using thin films and the presence of several interfering ions diminished the photocatalytic activity of thin films to some extent. The overall photocatalytic activity was in the order: S2 > S1 > UV. The photocatalytic degradation of MB was followed the pseudo-first-order rate kinetics. The mineralization of MB was studied with total organic carbon measurement using the TOC (total organic carbon) analysis.

AbstractSeveral photocatalysts, based on titanium dioxide, were synthesized by spark anodization techniques and anodic spark oxidation. Photocatalytic activity was determined by methylene blue oxidation and the catalytic activities of the catalysts were evaluated after 70 hours of reaction. Scanning Electron Microscopy and X Ray Diffraction analysis were used to characterize the catalysts. The photocatalyst prepared with a solution of sulfuric acid and 100 V presented the best performance in terms of oxidation of the dye (62%). The electric potential during the synthesis (10 V, low potential; 100 V, high potential) affected the surface characteristics: under low potential, catalyst presented smooth and homogeneous surfaces with spots (high TiO2 concentration) of amorphous solids; under low potential, catalyst presented porous surfaces with crystalline solids homogeneously distributed.

<div>Titanium dioxide is by far the most utilised semiconductor material for photocatalytic applications. Still, it is transparent to visible-light. Recently, it has been proved that a type-II band alignment for the rutile−anatase mixture would improve its visible-light absorption.</div><div>In this research paper we thoroughly characterised the real crystalline and amorphous phases of synthesised titanias – thermally treated at different temperatures to get distinct ratios of anatase-rutile-amorphous fraction – as well as that of three commercially available photocatalytic nano-TiO2. </div><div>The structural characterisation was done via advanced X-ray diffraction method, namely the Rietveld-RIR method, to attain a full quantitative phase analysis of the specimens. The microstructure was also investigated via an advanced X-ray method, the whole powder pattern modelling. These methods were validated combining advanced aberration-corrected scanning transmission microscopy and high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity was assessed in the liquid- and gas-solid phase (employing rhodamine B and 4-chlorophenol, and isopropanol, respectively, as the organic substances to degrade) using a light source irradiating exclusively in the visible-range.</div><div>Optical spectroscopy showed that even a small fraction of rutile (2 wt%) is able to shift to lower energies the apparent optical band gap of an anatase-rutile mixed phase. But is this enough to attain a real photocatalytic activity promoted by merely visible-light?</div><div>We tried to give a reply to that question.</div><div>Photocatalytic activity results in the liquid-solid phase showed that a high surface hydroxylation led to specimen with superior visible light-induced catalytic activity (i.e. dye and ligand-to-metal charge transfer complexes sensitisation effects). That is: not photocatalysis <i>sensu-strictu</i>.</div><div>On the other hand, the gas-solid phase results showed that a higher amount of the rutile fraction (around 10 wt%), together with less recombination of the charge carriers, were more effective for an actual photocatalytic oxidation of isopropanol.</div>

The Aurivillius phases of complex bismuth oxides have attracted considerable attention due to their lattice polarization (ferroelectricity) and photocatalytic activity. We report a first-principles exploration of Bi<sub>2</sub>WO<sub>6</sub> and the replacement of W<sup>6+</sup> by pentavalent (Nb<sup>5+</sup>, Ta<sup>5+</sup>) and tetravalent (Ti<sup>4+</sup>, Sn<sup>4+</sup>) ions, with charge neutrality maintained by the formation of a mixed-anion oxyhalide sublattice. We find that Bi<sub>2</sub>SnO<sub>4</sub>F<sub>2</sub> is thermodynamically unstable, in contrast to Bi<sub>2</sub>TaO<sub>5</sub>F, Bi<sub>2</sub>NbO<sub>5</sub>F and Bi<sub>2</sub>TiO<sub>4</sub>F<sub>2</sub>. The electric dipoles introduced by chemical substitutions in the parent compound are found to suppress the spontaneous polarization from 61.55 μC/cm<sup>2</sup> to below 15.50 μC/cm<sup>2</sup>. Analysis of the trends in electronic structure, surface structure, and ionization potentials are reported. This family of materials can be further extended with control of layer thicknesses and choice of compensating halide species.<br>
