Abstract Background The burnout syndrome is increasingly recognized as the factor compromising the mental health of health-care workers. The demands of higher education were reported to influence the development of burnout syndrome among students. Medical students are a significant population as both future health care workers and students with high academic demands. The burnout among medical students has been studied using different questionnaires. The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric characteristics of the Study Burnout inventory for the assessment of burnout among medical students. Methods The cross-sectional study was conducted during December of 2019 among the fifth year Medical students at the five Universities in Serbia (University of Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Nis, and Kosovska Mitrovica). The questionnaire used was the Study Burnout Inventory, nine-item scale, measuring three dimensions of burnout (exhaustion from studying- EXH; cynicism toward the meaningfulness of studying-CYN; the sense of inadequacy as a student-INAD). Answers were given on a six-point Lickert scale. The assessment of psychometric characteristics of the questionnaire was done using the reliability analysis (Cronbach alpha-α) and test-retest reliability (intra-class coefficient-ICC). Sensitivity and specificity were assessed using the Receiver operation curves (ROC) compared to the total burnout assessed by the Copenhagen burnout inventory. Results A total of 493 students filled-in the questionnaire. The mean score was 28.95±8.87/54. The Cronbach alpha for the total scale was α = 0.839, for the EXH scale was α = 0.724, for the CYN scale was α = 0.767, and for the INAD scale was α = 0.431. The test-retest reliability was ICC=0.750. The total area under the curve was 0.756 (95% CI: 0.711-0.800). Conclusions The Study Burnout Inventory has good reliability and can be used for rapid assessment of burnout among Medical students, as this scale is short and convenient for the participants. Key messages The Study burnout inventory has a good reliability as a total scale. This short scale is convenient for the participants and can be used for assessment of burnout.

Abstract Objectives Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare, chronic autoimmune condition of childhood, with known psychosocial implications. In this study, we sought to establish current psychological support for children and young people across the UK with rheumatic conditions, with a specific focus on those with JDM. Methods Electronic surveys were distributed to the 15 centres that belong to the JDM Research Group in the UK, collecting responses from health-care professionals in the fields of medicine, nursing and psychology. Results One hundred per cent of professionals from medicine and nursing replied from all 15 centres. Of these, 7 (47%) did not have a named psychologist as part of their rheumatology team, despite the majority [13 (87%)] having >200 paediatric rheumatology patients. Of the remaining centres, hospital psychology provision varied considerably. When rating their service, only 3 (8%) of 40 professionals scored their service as five (where one is poor and five is excellent); there were wide discrepancies in these scores. Many challenges were discussed, including limited psychology provision, lack of time and difficulties in offering support across large geographical areas. Conclusion Many of the challenges discussed are applicable to other centres worldwide. Suggestions have been proposed that might help to improve the situation for children and young people with rheumatic conditions, including JDM. Based on these findings, we suggest that rheumatology teams maximize use of these data to advocate and work toward more comprehensive psychology provision and support in their individual centres.

(1) Background: The aim of the present study was to develop and validate the psychometric characteristics of a scale measuring nurses’ experiences working with COVID-19 patients. (2) Methods: The participants were 180 Croatian nurses who worked in departments with COVID-19 patients, with a mean age of 36.8 years (ranging from 20 to 48). Research was conducted from March to June 2020. For the purpose of constructing the scale, 10 statements were developed. Factor analysis was used to determine the factor structure and construct validity of the scale. (3) Results: The scale consisted of nine statements divided into a three-factor structure: factor I—stigmatization and mistrusting (four items), factor II—social distancing (four items), and factor III—fear of infection (two items). Cronbach α was calculated to confirm the reliability of the scale: factor I—α = 0.80, factor II—α = 0.76, and factor III—α = 0.70. (4) Conclusion: The nurses’ pandemic-related experiences scale showed good psychometric properties and can be applied in future research as a standardized tool for measuring health care workers’ experience during COVID-19 or other infectious crises.

The promotion of competency of nurses and other health-care professionals is a goal shared by many stakeholders. In nursing, observation-based assessments are often better suited than paper-and-pencil tests for assessing many clinical abilities. Unfortunately, few instruments for simulation-based assessment of competency have been published that have undergone stringent reliability and validity evaluation. Reliability analyses typically involve some measure of rater agreement, but other sources of measurement error that affect reliability should also be considered. The purpose of this study is three-fold. First, using extant data collected from 18 nurses evaluated on 3 Scenarios by 3 Raters, we utilize generalizability (G) theory to examine the psychometric characteristics of the Nursing Performance Profile, a simulation-based instrument for assessing nursing competency. Results corroborated findings of previous studies of simulation-based assessments showing that obtaining desired score reliability requires substantially greater numbers of scenarios and/or raters. Second, we provide an illustrative exemplar of how G theory can be used to understand the relative magnitudes of sources of error variance—such as scenarios, raters, and items—and their interactions. Finally, we offer general recommendations for the design and psychometric study of simulation-based assessments in health-care contexts.

The Supreme Court of California held, in Delaney v. Baker, 82 Cal. Rptr. 2d 610 (1999), that the heightened remedies available under the Elder Abuse Act (Act), Cal. Welf. & Inst. Code, §§ 15657,15657.2 (West 1998), apply to health care providers who engage in reckless neglect of an elder adult. The court interpreted two sections of the Act: (1) section 15657, which provides for enhanced remedies for reckless neglect; and (2) section 15657.2, which limits recovery for actions based on “professional negligence.” The court held that reckless neglect is distinct from professional negligence and therefore the restrictions on remedies against health care providers for professional negligence are inapplicable.Kay Delaney sued Meadowood, a skilled nursing facility (SNF), after a resident, her mother, died. Evidence at trial indicated that Rose Wallien, the decedent, was left lying in her own urine and feces for extended periods of time and had stage I11 and IV pressure sores on her ankles, feet, and buttocks at the time of her death.

In the summer of 1979, a group of experts on law, medicine, and ethics assembled in Siracusa, Sicily, under the auspices of the International Commission of Jurists and the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Science, to draft guidelines on the rights of persons with mental illness. Sitting across the table from me was a quiet, proud man of distinctive intelligence, William J. Curran, Frances Glessner Lee Professor of Legal Medicine at Harvard University. Professor Curran was one of the principal drafters of those guidelines. Many years later in 1991, after several subsequent re-drafts by United Nations (U.N.) Rapporteur Erica-Irene Daes, the text was adopted by the U.N. General Assembly as the Principles for the Protection of Persons with Mental Illness and for the Improvement of Mental Health Care. This was the kind of remarkable achievement in the field of law and medicine that Professor Curran repeated throughout his distinguished career.
