Abstract People typically set goals in settings where they cannot be sure of how they will perform, but where their performance is revealed to them in parts over time. When part of the uncertainty is resolved, initial goals may have turned out to be unrealistic and hence they no longer work as a motivation device. Revising goals may increase performance by making goals realistic, but may also adversely affect performance through reduced goal commitment. We study the effects of motivating university students to set goals and inviting them to revise their goals later, using a field experiment involving nearly 2,100 students. We use courses containing two midterms and a final exam, where midterms reduce uncertainty about students’ potential performance. We find that motivating students to set goals does not affect performance on average. Students with midterm grades lower than their goal, decrease their performance. This effect is driven by students who were motivated to set goals without being made aware that they can revise their goals later. This finding may help explain why the evidence of the effectiveness of goals on study performance is mixed.

Abstract. The positive effects of goal setting on motivation and performance are among the most established findings of industrial–organizational psychology. Accordingly, goal setting is a common management technique. Lately, however, potential negative effects of goal-setting, for example, on unethical behavior, are increasingly being discussed. This research replicates and extends a laboratory experiment conducted in the United States. In one of three goal conditions (do-your-best goals, consistently high goals, increasingly high goals), 101 participants worked on a search task in five rounds. Half of them (transparency yes/no) were informed at the outset about goal development. We did not find the expected effects on unethical behavior but medium-to-large effects on subjective variables: Perceived fairness of goals and goal commitment were least favorable in the increasing-goal condition, particularly in later goal rounds. Results indicate that when designing goal-setting interventions, organizations may consider potential undesirable long-term effects.

This study investigated the strategies used by examinees when performing a computer-based speaking test. The data were collected from nine university students through a retrospective interview. The results showed that the examinees used several strategies, ranging from goal setting, assessment, planning to communication strategies. These strategies seemed to be associated with the constructs the CBST aimed to measure. It can be concluded that the findings provide evidence that supports the validity of the CBST score interpretations.

Aim: The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between leisure management and test anxiety levels of university students and their differentiation status in terms of some demographic variables. Methods: The relational survey model was used in the study, and there were 284 (147 male and 137 female) university students selected from the universe by convenient sampling method. Personal information form prepared by the researchers, “Leisure Management Scale (LMS)” and “Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI)” were used as data collection tools. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics, t-Test and Pearson Correlation analyzes were used by using SPSS 26.0 program. Results: There was no significant difference in the sub-dimensions of the leisure management scale and the total score averages according to the gender variable, while a significant difference was found in the TAI "delusional", "affective" sub-dimensions and total score averages. According to the family income variable of university students, a low-level and negative significant relationship was found in the "leisure attitude" sub-dimension of LMS, and in the total TAI and "delusional sub-dimension". A significant relationship was found between the age variable and the "goal setting and method" sub-dimension of LMS. A low and negative significant relationship was found between leisure and "goal setting and method", "leisure attitude" and total LMS score averages. In addition, while there was no significant relationship between LMS and TAI, it was found that there was a low and negative significant relationship between the "leisure attitude" sub-dimension and the test anxiety inventory and its sub-dimensions. Conclusion: It can be said that as the level of attitude towards leisure activities of university students’ increases, the feeling of exam anxiety may decrease, and the increase in free time will adversely affect the level of leisure management and attitude. [ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT REQUEST OF AUTHOR.] Goal setting in Missouri's Model Evaluation is the central focus of this research. Years of legislation increased the federal presence in public education and made accountability a household term for educators. The direct piece of policy that connects this research to is Missouri's ESEA Flexibility Waiver. The waiver established goals that would bypass the rigorous mandates of No Child Left Behind but would still ensure high-quality programs within Missouri schools. Effective leadership and instruction were a core goal of the waiver and established the seven principles of effective evaluation for Missouri public schools. The seven principles of effective evaluation were to serve as the guiding principles for educator evaluation in Missouri by the 2014-15 academic year. Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education created the Missouri Model Evaluation System, offering districts a premade evaluation system. The model system utilizes goal setting within growth guides to provide evaluation participants a focus for both evaluation and professional growth. The four moderators of Locke and Latham's Goal Setting Theory serve as the conceptual framing of this research. These moderators, or variables, are goal specificity, goal commitment, goal difficulty, and goal feedback. The likelihood of goal achievement increases when the moderators are considered during implementation.

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the performance strategies of volleyball players and also comparison of usage levels of strategies in training and competitions. Method: Total 134 voluntary amateur volleyball players between the ages of 15-24 participated in the study. Performance strategies of volleyball players were determined with Test of Performance Strategies that designed by Thomas et al., (1999). To examine the performance strategies of volleyball players and also comparison of usage levels of strategies in training and competitions Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) programme was employed. To define possible differences between variables Independent samples t test was used.     Findings: Practice scale’s highly used strategy was self-talk and the lowest usage percentage was attention control. Meanwhile, competition scale results indicated that the highest used strategy was activation and lowest used strategy was relaxation. While comparison of differences between practice and competition scales strategies, it was found that except of goal setting and imagery all other strategies showed significant differences. Conclusions: Psychological performance strategies’ averages of volleyball players were ensured and it is exhibited that to which strategies should be thought and focused. ​Extended English summary is in the end of Full Text PDF (TURKISH) file.​​ Özet Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, voleybolcuların kullandıkları psikolojik performans stratejilerinin incelenmesi ve antrenmanlarda ve müsabakalarda kullanılan stratejilerin kullanım düzeylerinin karşılaştırılmasıdır. Metod: Çalışmaya 15-24 yaş arasında 134 gönüllü voleybolcu katılmıştır. Sporcuların kullandıkları psikolojik performans stratejilerini ve bu stratejilerin düzeylerini belirlemek üzere Thomas ve ark. (1999) tasarladığı Psikolojik Performans Stratejileri testi kullanılmıştır. İstatistiki analizlerin yapılması amacıyla Sosyal Bilimler için İstatistik programı kullanılmıştır. Olası farklılıkların tespiti için Bağımsız Örneklem t testi kullanılmıştır.     Bulgular: Antrenman alt ölçeğinde kullanılan stratejiler arasında en yüksek ortalama kendinle konuşma becerisi; en az kullanılan ise dikkat kontrolü saptanmıştır.  Müsabaka alt ölçeğinde ise en fazla kullanılan strateji olarak da aktivasyon becerisi; en düşük düzeyde kullanılan beceri stratejisi de rahatlama olarak bulunmuştur. Kullanılan becerilerin karşılaştırılması sonucunda hedef belirleme ve imgeleme becerileri dışındaki tüm becerilerde anlamlı farklılık bulunmuştur. Sonuç: Voleybolcuların psikolojik becerileri kullanım düzeyleri ve ne tür becerilerin daha fazla oranda çalıştırılması gerektiği ortaya koyulmuştur.

Based on the value of teacher-student conferencing practice in writing classes, the study investigates the role of this practice in improving grammatical accuracy in EFL university students’ writing. One particular aim of this study is to help second-year students at Sétif 2 University (Algeria) reduce subject-verb (S-V) disagreement and run-ons in their writing. Ten students took part in this study; they wrote 120 drafts, and were provided with teacher’s oral feedback on their written compositions at the editing stage. Corpora of students’ compositions were examined and instances of errors were counted before each conferencing session for four weeks. The findings reveal that the participants successfully show progress in grammatical accuracy over time to reach elimination for Subject-Verb disagreements and a significant reduction for run-ons.

ABSTRACT Building on goal setting and social exchange theory, this study extends prior research about how employee participation in setting annual performance and development goals is related to goal commitment via increased perceptions of fairness, through including other (correlated) types of fairness than typically studied in management accounting research. Survey data are collected from 135 employees and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results demonstrate participation is directly positively related to goal commitment as well as indirectly via distributive and informational fairness. In addition, the statistical relation between procedural fairness and goal commitment is suppressed: it ranges from significantly positive to significantly negative dependent on what other variables are included in the analyses. As a second contribution, the suppressor phenomenon and its implications are extensively discussed. Suppression mainly occurs when there is much overlap in the independent variables, for instance when multiple control practices are examined simultaneously as systems or packages.
