Hydrometeorological conditions are important determinants of the distribution, abundance and growth of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta) parr and smolt in rivers. Long-term monitoring of the temperate zone Salaca River was conducted to investigate long-term changes in water temperature and streamflow and their effects on juvenile Atlantic salmon and sea trout. The average water temperature in the Salaca River was found to increase over time, particularly in autumn, winter and spring. River discharge increased in winter and summer, which was caused by increased precipitation. Goals of our study were: 1) to examine trends in water temperature and discharge in the river, 2) to explore relations between hydrometeorological trends, on the one hand, and abundance, size at age of salmon and sea trout parr and smolt, as well as changes in smolt migration patterns, on the other. This was the first occasion that a study of this type had been carried out in the Baltic Sea basin. In summer, growth of salmon parr in all age groups in the Salaca River was reduced. However, the size of smolt was found to increase. Migration of sea trout smolt in the Salaca River took place earlier, and the end of both salmon and sea trout migration was also observed earlier. The age structure of salmon smolt changed, with the one-year- old age group dominating. Judging from the total numbers of salmon and sea trout smolt in the River Salaca, production of smolt in the river during the monitoring period increased.

A tagging programme, in which wild sea trout (Salmo trutta) were marked at the parr stage with internal tags in winter and recaptured during smolt migration in a trap in the following spring, was conducted for three seasons in a small stream in southwestern Sweden, individuals that were initially smaller migrated later, grew more in length, and were smaller at migration than those initially bigger. Body length at migration decreased with migration time during the season for tagged as well as nontagged trout. A model for optimal time of and size at migration is proposed, based on the assumption that the expression (body length at the end of the season) × (survival over the season) is maximized and that migratory and postmigratory survival is positively size dependent. The qualitative predictions on the relationship between initial size and time of and size at migration are supported by the tagging data. Pre- and postmigratory growth rates are predicted to have opposite effects on migration time, so the migration timing is expected to depend strongly on the degree of dependence between these.

The frequency of distinct white fin margins was investigated in four brown trout (Salmo trutta) populations, living in the small stream Austadbekken (anadromous and stream resident) and in Lake Selura (lake and stream spawners). The frequency varied within and among populations. White margins were most common among parr and mature residents from Austadbekken. Sea trout had very low frequencies compared with parr and mature residents from the same population. Among stream spawners from Lake Selura (which stay the first 0–2 yr in the stream), white margins were less frequent than in Austadbekken; lake spawners (which spend their entire life in the lake) had even fewer. While a previous author stated that white fin margins were under genetic control, our observations indicate that the environment can affect the coloration. We hypothesize that white fin margins play a role in territorial behavior and are developed strongly where territorial behavior is pronounced, i.e. in stream- and river-dwelling trout. There may be a selective pressure, favoring easily seen signals showing that a territory is occupied so that energy-demanding fights can be avoided. In open sea and estuaries where predators are frequent, conspicuous fin margins may be a disadvantage due to greater predation risks.

This study presents a hydrogeochemical analysis of spring responses (2013-2017) in the tropical mountainous region of the Central Valley of Costa Rica. The isotopic distribution of δ18O and δ2H in rainfall resulted in a highly significant meteoric water line: δ2H = 7.93×δ18O + 10.37 (r2=0.97). Rainfall isotope composition exhibited a strong dependent seasonality. The isotopic variation (δ18O) of two springs within the Barva aquifer was simulated using the FlowPC program to determine mean transit times (MTTs). Exponential-piston and dispersion distribution functions provided the best-fit to the observed isotopic composition at Flores and Sacramento springs, respectively. MTTs corresponded to 1.23±0.03 (Sacramento) and 1.42±0.04 (Flores) years. The greater MTT was represented by a homogeneous geochemical composition at Flores, whereas the smaller MTT at Sacramento is reflected in a more variable geochemical response. The results may be used to enhance modelling efforts in central Costa Rica, whereby scarcity of long-term data limits water resources management plans.

The long-term data from morphometric studies of Artemia males from bisexual and parthenogenetic populations from hyperhaline reservoirs of the Altai region (Bolshoe Yarovoe Lake, Maloe Shklo Lake, and the Tanatar Lakes system) is analyzed in this paper. The description of signs of sexual dimorphism and sexual structure in different populations is given. The influence of brine salinity and hydrogen index on morphometric parameters of males was analyzed. There are differences in the sexual structure of the Artemia population: in the lakes Maloe Shklo and the thanatar system, the populations are bisexual (the share of males is 28.5 — 75.0 %), in the lake Bolshoe yarovoe — parthenogenetic (the share of males on average does not exceed 3 %). At the same time, sexual dimorphism is typical for both types of populations: females are larger than males, males have a larger head (the distance between the eyes is greater by 15.5 %, the diameter of the eye is 26.1 %, the length of the antenna is 22.3 %) and a larger number of bristles (36.1 %). The greatest variability is observed in the parameters of the Furka structure associated with the salinity of water by feedback and the pH — line indicator. Significant differences between the samples of males were revealed. The largest number of significant differences in morphometric indicators was found between samples of males from bisexual populations (lake thanatar and lake Maloe Shklo), the smallest — between males from the parthenogenetic population of lake Bolshoe yarovoe and males from lake Maloe Shklo.
