A Study of the Stress Intensity Factor and Crack Opening Displacement Relationship Between Uniform Thickness Pipe Bends and Non-Uniform Thickness Pipe Bends

This paper proposes the relationship of stress intensity factor and crack opening displacement between pipe bends with uniform thickness and those with non-uniform thickness. In actual case, pipe bends have thickness variations. Unlike typical pipe bends, heat induction bend pipes have significant thickness variations (non-uniform thickness) because of manufacturing process. When the ratio of radius of curvature and pipe radius is 3 for heat induction bend pipes, the thickness at intrados and extrados can be calculated by 1.75 times and 0.875 times of nominal thickness which is original thickness before manufacturing process, respectively. In this situation, it is difficult to apply existing elastic stress intensity factor and crack opening displacement results [1, 2] and it is essential to modify existing solution or to create new solution. In this paper, to find effect of pipe bends thickness variation, 90° through-wall cracked pipe bends with not only uniform thickness but also non-uniform thickness are considered. The ratios of radius and thickness are 5, 10 and ratios of pipe radius of curvature and radius are 3, 4 and 5. Loading condition is in-plane opening bending for intrados crack and closing bending for extrados crack. The through-wall crack sizes are 12.5%, 25% and 37.5% of circumferential cross section. Material of pipe bends is assumed to follow elastic behavior. The proposal is made by extensive finite elements analyses using ABAQUS [3], predicted elastic stress intensity factors for pipe bends with non-uniform thickness are compared with finite element results. The results show a good agreement. It may be useful to calculate elastic stress intensity factor for bends with non-uniform thickness without complex modeling and finite analyses.

Αντικείμενο της παρούσας έρευνας είναι η μελέτη θραυστότητας δομικών λίθων ιστορικών μνημείων, καθώς και η αποτίμηση υλικών στερέωσης. Ως εκ του τούτου, η έρευνα χωρίζεται σε δύο μέρη. Στο πρώτο μέρος πραγματοποιείται η μελέτη θραυστότητας δομικών λίθων. Για το σκοπό αυτό χρησιμοποιήθηκαν τέσσερις τύποι λίθων. Πιο συγκεκριμένα μάρμαρο και ασβεστόλιθος Μάνης, ο οποίος συναντάται σε διάφορα ιστορικά κτίρια όπως το Αρχοντικό των Μεδίκων και το Δημοτικό Κτίριο Οιτύλου, ψαμμιτικός ασβεστόλιθος Λευκωσίας από την Κύπρο, ο οποίος συναντάται σε ιστορικά κτίρια όπως η Δημοτική Αγορά Λεμεσού και τέλος πωρόλιθος Λευκωσίας από την Κύπρο, που συναντάται σε ιστορικά κτίρια όπως η ενορία της Χρυσαλινιώτισσας. Η αντοχή σε θραύση των δειγμάτων μαρμάρου και ασβεστόλιθου Μάνης υπολογίστηκε με τη διεξαγωγή πειραμάτων κάμψης τριών σημείων σε δείγματα με προϋπάρχουσες ρωγμές. Τα δείγματα αυτά ήταν πρισματικοί δοκοί, με εγκοπές στο κέντρο διαφόρων βαθών (σχήμα εγκοπής U). Για την μελέτη λήφθηκαν υπόψη το άνοιγμα της εγκοπής ή αλλιώς Crack Opening Displacement (COD), καθώς και ο Κρίσιμος Συντελεστής Εντάσεως των Τάσεων ή αλλιώς Critical Stress Intensity Factor (KIC) για τον Τρόπο Ι. Η έρευνα αποκάλυψε ότι η αντοχή σε θραύση παραμένει σταθερή όταν η αναλογία της εγκοπής σε σχέση με το ύψος του δείγματος υπερβαίνει το 0,2. Κατόπιν πραγματοποιήθηκαν δοκιμές θραύσης κατά τον ίδιο ακριβώς τρόπο στον ψαμμιτικό ασβεστόλιθο και πωρόλιθο Λευκωσίας, με μόνη διαφορά τις διαστάσεις στις εγκοπές, όπου είχαν το ίδιο πλάτος με το ύψος της ρωγμής. Η έρευνα αποκάλυψε ότι η αντοχή σε θραύση παραμένει η ίδια, πράγμα που υποδεικνύει ότι η αντοχή σε θραύση εξαρτάται κυρίως από το ύψος της εγκοπής και όχι τόσο από το πάχος της.Στα πλαίσια της παρούσας περιεκτικής μεθοδολογίας για την προσέγγιση των ιστορικών κτιρίων, στο δεύτερο και τελικό στάδιο της έρευνας πραγματοποιήθηκε μελέτη στο ιστορικό κτίριο «Αρχοντικό των Μεδίκων» της Μάνης, όπου έγινε περιγραφή του με μοντέλο πεπερασμένων στοιχείων. Για την περιγραφή πραγματοποιήθηκαν κάποιες επιπλέον δοκιμές στα δείγματα του πρώτου μέρος και πιο συγκεκριμένα αντοχής σε θλίψη για τον ασβεστόλιθο Μάνης αλλά και εφελκυσμού στο κονίαμα του κτιρίου. Στη συνέχεια έγινε έλεγχος της στατικής συμπεριφοράς του μοντέλου υπό την επίδραση σεισμικών δράσεων στην υπάρχουσα κατάστασή του αλλά και αποτιμώντας το με τρεις διαφορετικές προτάσεις αποκατάστασης με υλικά στερέωσης από ανόργανα υλικά (HAP) και αλκοξυσιλάνια (ES και TEOS), πάντα με τη βοήθεια του λογισμικού προγράμματος SAP2000 v18.2. 0 - Structural Analysis Program.

Two-dimensional (2D) finite element analyses have been carried out to study the crack opening displacement and stress intensity factor of a cracked centre-hole plate. With the different interference levels (2%, 4%, 6% and 8%) and acted by residual stress caused by cold expansion, the crack opening displacement, the stress intensity factor and J-integral around the crack tip is presented. With the different interference levels and acted by different applied loads , the crack opening displacement, the stress intensity and J-integral around the crack tip is also presented. The results of the 2D FEM analysis show, 1) with the different interference levels and acted by residual stress caused by cold expansion, the crack mouth is throughout closed and the middle part is open, but the opening displacement is constant; 2) under some applied loads, with the interference levels up, the stress intensity factor on the crack tip and J-integral, become weak gradually, then they keep constant values; 3) with the interference increases, the stress intensity factor and J-integral decreases. When the interference increases a certain value, the stress intensity factor and J-integral do not decrease and keep constant values.

This paper presents the plane elastostatics analysis of a semi-infinite crack perpendicular to a perfectly bonded bimaterial interface. Both cases of the crack approaching the interface and penetrating the interface are addressed. The distance from the tip of the crack to the interface is δ. A singular integral equation approach is used to calculate the stress intensity factor, KI, and the crack-opening displacement at the interface, η, as functions of δ, the Dundurs parameters α and β, and the stress intensity factor kI associated with the same crack terminating at the interface (the case δ = 0). The results are presented as KI=kIδ1/2−λf(α,β) and η=CkIδ1−λη(˜α,β) where λ is the strength of the stress singularity associated with δ = 0, f and η˜ are functions calculated numerically and C is a material constant. These results can be used to determine the stress intensity factor and crack opening displacement of cracks of finite length 2a with one tip at a distance δ from the interface for δ/a≪1. The selected results presented for a crack loaded by a uniform far-field tension in each half-plane show that the stress intensity factors approach their limits at a relatively slow rate.
