This review focuses on the ability of some natural antioxidant molecules (i.e., hydroxycinnamic acids, coumarin-3-carboxylic acid, quercetin, luteolin and curcumin) to form Al(III)- and Fe(III)-complexes with the aim of evaluating the coordination properties from a combined experimental and theoretical point of view. Despite the contributions of previous studies on the chemical properties and biological activity of these metal complexes involving such natural antioxidants, further detailed relationships between the structure and properties are still required. In this context, the investigation on the coordination properties of Al(III) and Fe(III) toward these natural antioxidant molecules might deserve high interest to design water soluble molecule-based metal carriers that can improve the metal’s intake and/or its removal in living organisms.

CD1e displays unique features in comparison with other CD1 proteins. CD1e accumulates in Golgi compartments of immature dendritic cells and is transported directly to lysosomes, where it is cleaved into a soluble form. In these latter compartments, CD1e participates in the processing of glycolipid antigens. In the present study, we show that the N-terminal end of the membrane-associated molecule begins at amino acid 20, whereas the soluble molecule consists of amino acids 32–333. Thus immature CD1e includes an N-terminal propeptide which is cleaved in acidic compartments and so is absent from its mature endosomal form. Mutagenesis experiments demonstrated that the propeptide controls the assembly of the CD1e α-chain with β2-microglobulin, whereas propeptide-deleted CD1e molecules are immunologically active. Comparison of CD1e cDNAs from different mammalian species indicates that the CD1e propeptide is conserved during evolution, suggesting that it may also optimize the generation of CD1e molecules in other species.

The rate of secretion of the Malpighian tubules of Glossina austeni is controlled by a diuretic hormone. This hormone is present in the nervous tissue of the fly together with a degradative enzyme that can be activated by boiling. It is demonstrated that the Malpighian tubules are able to destroy the diuretic hormone; they may therefore participate in the control of diuresis. The diuretic hormone appears to be a heat-stable, non-dialysable, alcohol-soluble molecule, containing amino acid, glucose and sialic acid residues.

We have evaluated the expression of surface Fc gamma 2b/gamma 1R by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated murine spleen cells, the release of soluble Fc gamma 2b/gamma 1R by activated spleen cells, and the presence of circulating Fc gamma 2b/gamma 1R in mouse serum. LPS activation of murine spleen cells and a cloned B cell line, BCL-1 CW 13.20-3B3, resulted in a 5-10-fold increase in surface Fc gamma 2b/gamma 1R and the concominant appearance in the culture medium of a soluble molecule that is antigenically related to the Fc gamma 2b/gamma 1R. The increase in cell-associated and soluble Fc gamma 2b/gamma 1R after LPS activation is attributable primarily to B cells. Circulating Fc gamma 2b/gamma 1R was also detected in normal mouse serum at a concentration of 10(-9) to 10(-8) M. Levels of circulating Fc gamma 2b/gamma 1R increase with the age of the animals, and were low in adult germ-free mice and elevated in young mice with certain autoimmune diseases. The circulating Fc gamma 2b/gamma 1R bound to IgG-Sepharose, and was partially purified by affinity chromatography on 2.4G2 Fab-Sepharose. After radiolabeling and immunoprecipitation with rabbit anti-Fc gamma 2b/gamma 1R serum, one component of Mr 48,000, was detected.

Substitution of the four paraphenyl hydrogens of iron tetraphenylporphyrin by trimethylammonio groups provides a water-soluble molecule able to catalyze the electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide. The reaction, performed in pH-neutral water, forms quasi-exclusively carbon monoxide with very little production of hydrogen, despite partial equilibration of CO2 with carbonic acid—a low pKa acid. This selective molecular catalyst is endowed with a good stability and a high turnover frequency. On this basis, prescribed composition of CO–H2 mixtures can be obtained by adjusting the pH of the solution, optionally adding an electroinactive buffer. The development of these strategies will be greatly facilitated by the fact that one operates in water. The same applies for the association of the cathode compartment with a proton-producing anode by means of a suitable separator.

A significant increase of the indices of the molecule of adhesion of vascular cells-1 (sVCAM-1) and Lselectin was demonstrated in the course of the research in the blood of patients with antiphospholipid syndrome as compared with healthy persons. The levels of the substances under study were associated with the markers of the activity of an inflammatory process (ESR, TNF-α, IL-1, CRP), disturbances of the lipid metabolism, the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies and concomitant arterial hypertension, however, they practically did not depend on the age, gender, the duration of the disease, tobacco smoking, obesity and hypodynamia. Close correlations have also been established between an elevated concentration of sVCAM-1 and L-selectin and structural functional changes of the vascular endothelium, enabling to regard them to be circulating markers of an early development of atherosclerosis in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome.
