Grid, schism and lobotomy: The Almere City Center as the “City of the Captive Globe” by Rem Koolhaas Rem Koolhaas published Delirious New York: A Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan in 1978. He closes the book with a series of concise speculative projects to illustrate his point. The first of these, „The City of the Captive Globe”, is an ambiguous and constantly re-interpreted metaphor for metropolitanism and the lifestyle associated with it. Interpreted as a synthesis of the „retroactive manifesto”, Captive Globe allows us to grasp the ideological background of the urban design thought of Koolhaas and OMA, his design studio. Between 1995 and 2007 OMA carried out the project for the new City Center of Almere near Amsterdam. Through the three postulates of the City of the Captive Globe, the authors attempt an in-depth understanding of Almere master plan, going beyond the analysis of its formal features.

Growth activities are concentrated in the golden triangle, but in recent years development has actually been growing in the western and eastern regions of Jakarta, known as the West Primary Center and East Primary Center. The plan to develop the West Primary Center was initially seen in the DKI Jakarta Regional Regulation, where the existing development aims to achieve the balance of ecosystems and economic equality in Jakarta and make the West Primary Center as the center of primary activities in West Jakarta City. There are several aspects that are the focus of planning, road network, land use, building intensity, and public transportation. The West Primary Center is located in the Puri Indah area which covers an area of 135 ha. Through this research a study was conducted on the development of the implementation of spatial regulations in West Primary Center Puri Indah as a new city center to find out whether the existing conditions of the West Primary Center have fulfilled and are in accordance with their planning as the primary activity center. The analysis carried out were policy, position, spatial, property development, and the informal sector. The tools used in this research are timeline analysis, ArcGIS mapping, and qualitative descriptive. The result of this research is the existing condition of the West Primary Center hasn’t  fulfilled with its planning as a center for primary activities in West Jakara City which is seen based on several aspects.

The post-industrial renewal of urban structure is creating a new city center culture in which social, political and economic interests are intermingled. The current practice of city center renewal based on internal growth and partnership policy also causes undesirable consequences arising from the new form of service-based economy and the changes in space utilization and mobility associated with the future development of cities.

Abstract. The development of the region towards the outskirts of the city has become a common phenomenon of cities in Indonesia. The area that was formerly a deserted area is now a sought-after area of urban society. This is due to limited land in the city center causing the start of the spread of occupancy in the suburbs. The development of suburban areas that will undergo a transition causes a change of space in the region This phenomenon can be found in the city of Semarang. One of them is the district of Mijen Semarang. The area that was formerly a small settlement with the potential of rubber forest farming has changed into one of the elite areas in the city of Semarang. The emergence of housing Bukit Semarang Baru (BSB) as a catalyst has a great impact on the development of the surrounding environment. Bukit Semarang Baru (BSB) in Mijen District, Semarang City is a new city concept housing that provides housing, education, industry, recreation and other commercial facilities. The transfer of land from rubber plantation to BSB housing is estimated to cause the transformation of space related to the function and land use in the surrounding settlements, especially the area directly adjacent to the village of Wonolopo. This research uses a rationalistic approach with qualitative paradigm, which in this study aims to understand and know the pattern of settlement transformation in settlements that occur in the village Wonolopo, Mijen, Semarang. Through this research is expected to be able to analyze and know how big the change of settlement space

This paper explores the various roots and characteristics of current high-rise clusters emerging in new city districts along the coast of Manama and the resulting challenges to urban planning. Like many other Gulf cities Bahrain's capital Manama has witnessed rapid urban growth since local real-estate markets were liberalized in 2003. The recent developments have particularly focused on newly reclaimed areas along the periphery of Manama's city center. These new districts are mainly occupied by residential and commercial high-rises, which have been transforming previous urban morphologies. Today, the public sector is witnessing a wide range of planning challenges to integrate urban consolidation processes and to prevent infrastructural collapse. This paper therefore examines the evolution of urban planning that has led to the construction of high-rise buildings. In addition, the paper is based on GIS calculations and field studies regarding the increase of built densities, particularly between 2003 and 2008, when most developments were launched. In this regard, two case studies, Juffair and Seef District, were selected due to their main roles in recent development tendencies.

Abstract Research background: In recent years, the return of city and suburbs dwellers to city centers has been observed. This phenomenon is caused in particular by the growing costs of transport and time spent on commuting. From this point of view, it seems interesting to observe the prices of properties located in the suburbs in relation to the prices of properties located around city centers and to examine their similarity. The center, however, should not be identified solely as the Old Town but rather as a certain area in which the professional, cultural and private life of the citizens is concentrated. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to find a method of identifying new city centers that allow developers to create a pricing map and, consequently, to determine the appropriate price level on the primary market. At the same time, it should help appraisers to capture the relationship between values of the properties located in different parts of a city. Research methodology: The purpose of this study is achieved by deploying a taxonomic method (the modified density method) to identify new (or created) urban centers. The analysis is applied to the city of Wrocław. Results: The findings reveal that it is clearly possible to identify visually clusters constituting new city centers by using the applied method. It is also possible to indicate in an analytical way the central location of a given center. The main advantage of the applied approach is that it is of universal use, suitable both for cities where one city center dominates, and for those where the dominant center is not present and is represented, for example, by the coastline of a sea. Novelty: The density measure presented in the paper allows identifying city centers in an analytical way, based on given conditions. Habitants usually feel where the local center is, but it is not obvious how the prices of residentials might spread out in space according to those centers. The measure can be easily modified by introducing new features that characterize the centers.
