This article aims to foster discussion and debate around seeking parental consent from young people recruited online. The growth of social media, particularly for young people, has led to increased interest in young people’s online activities as both a research topic and recruitment setting. In a health-related study, which sought to recruit young people aged 13 to 18 years old from YouTuber fan communities to an online survey, the question arose of how parental consent could be sought from young people below 16 when no link existed between researcher and parents/guardians. A practical strategy is proposed which combines novel communication methods for participant information, opt-out online consent and age verification to address this issue. Strengths and limitations of these approaches are discussed.

In a context of ongoing colonization and dispossession in Australia, many Aboriginal people live with experiences of health research that is done “on” rather than “with” or “by” them. Recognizing the agency of young people and contributing to Aboriginal self-determination and community control of research, we used a peer research methodology involving Aboriginal young people as researchers, advisors, and participants in a qualitative sexual health study in one remote setting in the Northern Territory, Australia. We document the methodology, while critically reflecting on its benefits and limitations as a decolonizing method. Findings confirm the importance of enabling Aboriginal young people to play a central role in research with other young people about their own sexual health. Future priorities include developing more enduring forms of coinvestigation with Aboriginal young people beyond data collection during single studies, and support for young researchers to gain formal qualifications to enhance future employability.

SummaryIssues relating to the consent of individuals under 18 years of age in England and Wales are covered by the Family Law Reform Act 1969, the Children Act 1989, the Mental Health Act 1983 (to some extent) and case law. Legislation on the consent of minors to hospital admission and treatment is complicated and contradictory, leaving clinicians unsure when to rely on the consent of the minor or that of someone with parental responsibility. This article reviews the concept of the zone of parental control (ZPC), introduced in England in 2008. It argues that this concept is too vague and subjective to provide any clear guidance on who can give consent for a minor's admission and treatment.LEARNING OBJECTIVES•Understand the concept of the ZPC and its relevance to clinical practice.•Determine the appropriate legal source of consent or refusal for children and young people.•Consider using formal powers (as against parental consent) with children and young people refusing admission and/or treatment.

Introduction. The complex problems of upbringing and education of young people, their choice of landmarks in their life path, occupations and self-realization, which are relevant for the progress of the modern world, are studied by scholars from many countries. However, the existing specialization of sciences and the prevailing system of preferences of different scientific schools serve as an obstacle to inter- and transdisciplinary research. The purpose of the article is to present the results of the analysis of the vast problematic field of self-determination and self-realization of modern Russian youth. Materials and Methods. To study the problem, an analysis of statistical data and the results of sociological surveys, a cluster grouping of threats-problems in the sphere of self-determination and self-realization of youth was used for subsequent topological modeling. It was done by constructing and analyzing an oriented (causeand- effect) graph of threats as undesirable effects in order to identify key problems. When constructing a directed graph from threat-problems, the method of functional analysis of cause-and-effect chains tested in the study of a variety of non-standard problem situations in the theory of inventive problem solving was used. Results. Based on the results of the analysis of the cause-and-effect multigraph, built on the basis of 33 threatsproblems as troubles, four reasons of the first level were identified: “brain drain”, violation of the principle of social justice in the country, lack of ideological unity of society due to the ban on state ideology, low religiosity of society. This is followed by three reasons of the second level: the lack of a coherent state youth policy, the ineffectiveness of the existing model of such a policy, a unified state exam as one of the key reasons for the random choice of vocational training for young people. Discussion and Conclusion. The results obtained add up to the development of comprehensive research on the problems of youth self-determination and self-realization that are extremely important for the countryʼs optimistic future.

Professional self-determination of young people is a controversial process complicated by the need to choose the field of activity and determine their place in life. Taking into account the complex influence of all factors on the professional orientation of young people is considered a reliable guarantee of the young person's choice of profession as part of life self-determination. However, it cannot be assumed that this process does not need management and practical support, and it can be carried out in a self-adjusting way. In addition, when choosing a profession, young people often rely on external attributes (publicity, showiness, prestige of the profession within the immediate circles) which gives rise to a corresponding interest in its development. Sometimes they do not take into account their correspondence to the requirements of the particular professional field: personal traits representing the importance of a professional, intellectual level of development, or the physiological capabilities necessary for the implementation of this professional activity. Increased attention is aimed at development of the natural instincts of the younger generation, as well as their professional formation, that is, on organizing assistance to young people in the choice of employment. At the same time, the choice should be made not only with a focus on the needs and opportunities of young people themselves, but also taking into account the labor market situation in the conditions of continuous updating of the list of popular professions. Willingness to respond quickly to market demands is the most approved approach to choosing a profession in modern conditions. Timely and qualified assistance in professional orientation would help young people meet the highest need: the need for self-realization.
